done with life at the moment

Spoilers for “No Laughing Matter” ahead:

  • It was not as feelsy as I thought it was going to be, but still I felt bad for poor Luan.
  • I did like the part where Lori and Leni were doing their makeup in the bathroom while Luna was in the shower because it reminded me of me and my sisters because we do that sometimes.
  • Lily chewing on the table
  • Lucy hissing like a vampire made me LOL ngl
  • Lynn looking like she was done with life, me
  • Lincoln looked cute but that’s probably just me being biased lol
  • Poor Lincoln was so nervous when he got on stage I thought he was gonna pass out.
  • All in all it had some cute sibling moments and it warmed my heart a lot. I give it a 8/10

Allura's happiest memories are with her father because she has actually very few moments with him growing up. Between his alchemy work, his engineering studies, and being a Paladin, Alfor is rarely home. So the few times that he is on Altea and spending time with her, they're the ones Allura hold closest to her heart. And Alfor does too. Everything he has done was to give Allura a better life and to keep her happy.

why do you have to come for me like this and make me cry like why

Introduction: Hi! I’m Annie, I recently graduated as valedictorian of a class of almost 700, and I’m about to be a freshman at Johns Hopkins (go blue jays!!). High school was some of the best and worst moments of my life, and looking back, there are so many things that I wish I’d done and things that made me successful, so I wanted to share them! Of course, disclaimer, these tips may not apply to everyone!

(These tips generally apply to all classes, but if you have a specific subject you want tips on, I’ve taken these AP courses: european history, world history, us gov’t, macroeconomics, lang, lit, calc ab, chemistry, physics 1, physics c, environmental science, art: drawing, biology, human geography, chinese, and art history. Feel free to message me!)

College applications are a crapshoot- I can’t begin to tell you the number of incredible, brilliant people with extraordinary, international level achievements that got denied at top schools in favor of those lacking those accomplishments. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean those who got in don’t have qualities that earned them a spot, it just speaks to the unpredictable nature of the college application process. When deans of admission at top schools openly say they could reject all admitted students and build the same exemplary class from the waitlist, or that they have enough qualified applicants to fill 3 or 4 classes with, there’s a certain amount of luck involved. Therefore I urge all rising seniors to go into this process realizing that the odds are not in your favor. I went into the process with too much blind hope, too confident in my ability to be that lucky 1 in 10 (or less) that would gain admission, and I was sorely disappointed. So that leads me to my next tip…

Don’t do things just for your college application- Those slim acceptance rates are the exact reason I urge you not to join things solely for how good they look on a college application. It seems counterintuitive; wouldn’t they give you a better chance of acceptance? However, my point is not to dissuade you from extracurriculars, but rather to commit to ones that genuinely make you happy. As I wrote above, the process is so competitive that even international achievements may mean rejection, so don’t waste your high school experience by dedicating so much time and effort to something that you feel obligated to do.

Try everything your freshman and sophomore year- My biggest regret is not joining clubs where my passions lie simply because I was too lazy or scared of things like public speaking my freshman year. It’s much more intimidating to join as upperclassmen, and you may not be able to participate at all the levels/in all the ways people who have dedicated 3-4 years can. Even if you don’t think its for you (like debate for me because of my fear of public speaking), I urge you to expand your horizons and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Many clubs give you great opportunities to build leadership, public speaking, etc. skills and to find your passions.

Know both sides of the flashcard- I learned this tip from my organic chemistry class, and I’d never though about how useful it is. For example, if you’re memorizing polyatomic ions, it’s extremely important that you know both the formula and the name, as either version may show up on the exam. Not doing this also makes the weaknesses in your memorization evident- whenever I study vocab, I tend to glance at the side with the term and only memorize the definition. This meant that when I was given only the definitions, I couldn’t remember the word they defined, because I was so used to being given the vocab word and responding with the definition.

The first lecture of the unit is one of the most important for STEM classes- I know the beginning of the unit can often seem like the perfect time to tune out, as it goes over information you’ve previously learned or the easiest material of the topic, but it often forms the foundation for everything else in the unit. For example, the first lecture on a stoichiometry unit will probably teach you dimensional analysis, a skill integral to calculating molecular or empirical formulas, moles or grams of a substance, etc.

Buy/sell books secondhand- Everyone knows how expensive college textbooks are, but between SAT and AP prep books, and books for English, high school books can cost quite a bit of money too. Unless they redesigned the exam recently, you absolutely don’t need the newest edition of the review book, so buy from upperclassmen and then sell it to underclassmen the following year.

Learn to self study- Unless you’re really lucky, you’re guaranteed to have a teacher who doesn’t teach, teaches badly, or whose teaching style just doesn’t work for you. Personally, I find that self learning, especially if I’m struggling because resources such as textbooks and online explanations, and videos seem to contradict, really helps me understand the topic throughly. In AP bio, my teacher had us create claymation videos on the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis independently. It was incredibly frustrating and confusing because all the resources described the cycles in varying degrees of details, but I felt like I genuinely understood the topic, instead of having been spoon-fed the information and memorizing it. Obviously, this method isn’t very efficient for frequent use, but the key is to try to understand the material independently instead of going to the teacher the moment you hit a snag.

Keep your backpack/binders/notebooks reasonably organized- When teachers ask for homework to be passed up and you have to dig through mountains of papers in your backpack, not only is that super stressful, but a lot of teachers won’t let you turn it in after they have already collected all the papers. I was definitely guilty of being lazy and just stuffing papers, once I got them, into my backpack instead of taking a few seconds to slide them into a binder, and as a result I got 0s on lots of homework because either I couldn’t find it at the time or because everything was so messy I didn’t remember there was homework. Try to have some sort of organization system going on or at least a homework folder, because those 0s add up and can be the difference between an 89 and 90.

You’re gonna get senioritis, badly, and that’s ok- I’ve always been the type of person who did every homework assignment and was very focused on grades, so the idea that I would completely let myself ago seemed absurd to me. Don’t underestimate what senior year does to you. I can honestly count on one hand the econ worksheets that I actually turned in during senior year, and I made my first B in a grading period during the spring. I was very stressed about how awful my grades were, but unable to muster the energy to do anything about it. And you know what, it’s ok. It’s senior year, you can give yourself a break. Yes, your senior grades are still important for college applications, so don’t go from straight A’s to straight C’s, but for the most part, all the hard work is behind you. Do keep in mind that these habits may haunt you when you’re a college freshman. I haven’t started classes yet, but based on how little I studied for the math placement exam for my college, senioitis doesn’t magically end when you graduate, so don’t let it get completely out of control during the year.

Learn how to do math without a calculator- If you take either of the AP Calculuses or the SAT, you need to master this skill because there are sections of the exams that are strictly non-calculator.  Beyond that, when you get to calculus, you’ll be introduced to complicated concepts, where not being able to multiply by hand will drag you down.

Keep old notes- Not only for finals, but some topics are very interdisciplinary, like biochemistry, so it’s very important that you have a working knowledge of both biology and chemistry. As you take advanced classes, such as for me, taking physics c after physics 1, it will be assumed that you have completely mastered the basics, and they will be skipped or referenced very quickly. It is very useful to look at notes on the basics, which provide the foundation for the advanced material you learn.

Invest in a whiteboard- Whenever I was learning about processes or cycles, from the Krebs cycle to organic chemistry mechanisms, it was really useful to practice drawing the steps over and over again. Then when it came to the test, I could do a brain dump and draw out the information as a reference.

Understand formulas instead of blindly memorizing- This basically has physics and calculus written all over it. In physics, you should be given formula charts during exams, and in any case, something like F=ma isn’t terribly hard to memorize. The problem comes when there are a multitude of formulas that are derived from one of the fundamental equations. Of course, deriving from scratch each time is incredibly tedious, but I want to dissuade you from simply memorizing it or storing it on your calculator, because that means you probably don’t understand the physics behind it. What makes physics so difficult and different from any other subject you’ve taken is that every problem will have a slightly different scenario that tests your understanding of the physics behind it.

Use all the time given to you during tests- I know I hate looking back through my test because I just get so bored halfway through, but missing points because of silly mistakes is honestly the most frustrating thing ever when you had plenty of time to check. Depending on if I have time, I like to cover my original work and resolve the question. If checking answers is not your thing, try slowing now when you first see each question, and checking your work briefly each step.

Form study groups- Talking about something, especially teaching it to someone, always helped me remember something so much better than reading it on paper. It’s also so important to have second interpretations of the information you’re studying to ensure that you don’t make a huge misconception.

AP students: released/practice exams are your best friend- Obviously, they’re the best resources for studying for the AP exam, but they’re also a great tool for a hint at what your teacher’s tests may look like. AP teachers have access to tons of College Board material and will often use questions directly from old exams.

If you start getting confused during a lecture- Many times this is because I didn’t pay attention during the very beginning, so I’m missing that important foundation I talked about in the previous tip. Of course, I typically wouldn’t recommend doing things other than listening to what is currently being taught, but in this case, I would just get more confused and it’s a waste of time. So I discretely go back to my previous notes and focus on understanding them.

The most stressful part of schoolwork is just thinking about your assignments- There’s always specific period of time that threatens to kill me- a week where I had two competitions simultaneously, in cities 3 hours apart. When you’re taking 7 AP classes at the same time, just reading over your to-do list will make you want to cry. Even on a normal day, as I go to classes throughout the day and my list of homework gets longer and longer, it makes me so stressed to where I’m planning out how to finish everything and I’m no longer listening in class. It overwhelmed me so much that I just wanted to take a nap and avoid school. But every single time, stressing about the work I have is 1000x worse than sitting down and actually going through each task. I find that what had seemed impossible before was very doable, and many times I even finished early enough to relax before bed. Keep a positive mindset, don’t underestimate your abilities, and have the discipline to start working immediately on the hardest days, and you’ll be fine. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the workload that is able to be handled by one person can work for another, and things like mental illnesses are things I have no experience in, so this is definitely just something that worked for me and is not applicable to everyone.

Best of luck with high school! If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask!

Wolf!Stiles Sterek AU: Stiles gets the bite to save his life and wakes up in the hospital to find that he’s now officially part of the Beacon Hills supernatural club. He knows there are a million reasons he should be upset at the moment, but all he can think about is the fact that when he looks in the mirror there’s going to be a constant reminder of all the terrible things he’s done.

BTS BUTTERFLY EFFECT THEORY

Okay so couple weeks ago I watched the movie butterfly effect and with the last highlight reel I’m basically sure about this theory.

So, for the ones who have not seen the movie it goes like this (I strongly recommend you watch the movie though);

A boy named Evan, goes through hard times during his childhood and his teenage years. But he cannot remember these key moments in his life he blacks out and wakes up after everything is done. He starts writing down everything in his journals so he can keep track of everything.

Later in his life he realizes that he has the power to go back in time and undone his and his friends’ mistakes. He does this by looking through his journals and recalling the memories he must go back to. He goes back dozens of times but every time he undoes something, another one goes wrong. In a surprising turn, he finds out his dad had the same abilities and his dad did the same in his lifetime by looking at the PHOTOS he took. YES photos. Does it sound familiar? Because it should. Who do we see always taking vids and pics throughout the whole HYYH + WINGS eras?

Jin is Evan in their story, trying to save the boys over and over again, trying to make everything right. See also, how exhausted Jin looks in the end of the most recent highlight reel. He’s been trying to save these boys for so long.

‘Coincidentally’ one of the times Evan uses this ability in the movie is when the girl he loves commits suicide and he goes back to save her. Which we see Jin do in Highlight Reel 3. Whenever Evan goes back in time and changes something their lives change, things disappear, the way their lives go change, but there are always reoccurring scenes. Throughout HYYH and Wings there are scenes we see too often but always in different settings. Almost like these things happen but in parallel universes. The parallel universes that Jin creates every time he goes back in time to save the boys. Few of them are;

Taehyung with wall painting and graffiti

Taehyung getting arrested

Yoongi with his fire obsession and his piano

Jimin with water

Hoseok with pills

Jimin / Hoseok in hospitals

Jimin drowning / in or around bathtubs

Namjoon with a lollipop

Namjoon with phone boxes

And of course, the obvious; couples

The never-ending connections between Jungkook/Yoongi, Jimin/Hoseok and Namjoon/Taehyung which not so surprisingly leaves out Jin, because he’s the one trying to save them.

In MVs there are a lot of scenes implying the butterfly effect itself for instance

In highlight reel Jin said: “Yesterdays many encounters and goodbyes existed for this moment. Every alley and crossroad I walked through were all meant to lead me to this place.” Saying that every little thing done in the past led him to the place he is now, which is basically the definition of butterfly effect.

Or for instance in I Need U Japanese Version MV when Jungkook burns the flower in his hand, the camera instantly cuts to the photo of the same flower behind Yoongi starting burn as well, meaning Jungkook’s actions affect Yoongi’s life.

There are a lot of butterfly imagery in the MVs as well. Not even mentioning there’s a song called Butterfly and one of the album’s name is WINGS.

So, let’s talk about hyyh1 and hyyh2. My theory is that HYYH2 could be a different reliving of HYYH1 where Jin had to go back in time because well, our boys fucked up. With Taehyung killing his father/ brother, Hoseok swallowing those pills, Jungkook getting in a car crash, Yoongi burning himself in his hotel room and Jimin drowning himself. HYYH2 with Run MV is Jin’s another attempt so save these 6 boys. Also at the end of BS&T Japanese Version we see Jin going to the place Namjoon works and saying, “Long time, no see” where Namjoon is startled to see Jin. This could also contribute to the theory that after everything went downhills in BS&T jap verse, Jin fighting with Taehyung included, Jin had to try again.

I believe their hairstyles and colors as well as their clothing style changes between I Need U and Run eras to imply a different universe, but we can never be sure.

I want to note that in Run MV where the boys are vandalizing the cars in the tunnel Jin is the only one sitting in the car not doing anything and when they start to run he’s the one who gets them out of trouble, he’s the one who’s waiting to save them.

If we tie things with the Korean version BS&T MV it explains the duality of the universes. Jin sees another dimension through the mirror in the end of BS&T which could be tied to HYYH era as every time Jin tries to save the boys he creates another universe. BS&T also shows the evil temptations the boys are facing and Jin once again sacrificing himself and saving the boys.

Also coming to the Highlight Reels, to me, as the whole story is still connected to the book Demian by Hermann Hesse, the girls represent their Beatrices. In the book, Sinclair thought he had fallen for a girl he saw in a park and named Beatrice. He thought about her as the days went on and finally decided to paint a picture of her. As he painted he realized what he was drawing resembled no longer a girl but the face of a young man. He finished the painting only to realize he had drawn Demian. Because Demian was the one he was longing for. The pairings Jimin/Jhope, Jungkook/Yoongi and Taehyung/Namjoon are Sinclair and Demian to each other.

the demian connections were also said by @/angelakiss_tale on twitter so kudos to them for making me realize.

I’ll add things as I connect the dots, I’ve still yet to understand all the individual stories told in Highlight Reels. Especially Jihope+the girl story dumbfounded me.

And then, in a moment, something changed. Perhaps he remembered something heard in his youth a long time ago: an ancient prophecy of the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. Perhaps the vague outlines of someone named Shmi and a Jedi named Qui-Gon struggled to the surface of his consciousness. The most powerful, the most repressed thought of all could have emerged from the darkness: Padmé…and her undying love for someone he once knew well. And despite all the terrible, unspeakable things he’d done in his life, he suddenly realised he could not stand by and allow the Emperor to kill their son. And in that moment, he was no longer Darth Vader.

He was Anakin Skywalker.

Questions for the signs

Aries: how have you been doing? has the past finally caught up with you? have your mistakes sunk in? that’s okay. now let them go. they do not define who you are anymore. you have the power to move on from who you used to be. within you lies the power to grow. utilize it. your gift is special, a priviledge granted to few.

Taurus: are you really happy?is this the life you enjoy, or the one they want you to live?start making choices for yourself. live is too short not to enjoy every moment.

Gemini: who are you trying to fool? pretending to be someone you aren’t will only cause you to completely lose yourself. open your eyes, and do things for yourself. not for them, but for you. then, you will discover how happy you truly are capable of becoming.

Cancer: how come you always put others before yourself? your own well being is just as important as the needs of those you love. take care of yourself, so you can better take care of others’.

Leo: why push away the love they offer you? why not embrace it? emotions are okay. no matter what you tell yourself, you are human. its okay to be vulnerable sometimes.

Virgo: when are you going to let yourself breathe? are you going to stop constantly critisizing yourself? you don’t have to be your own worst enemy. once you become your best friend, you will know peace.

Libra: are you still questioning yourself? why not just go with your instincts? mistakes are okay. you will never see what life has to offer if you keep holding yourself back.

Scorpio: why are you letting yourself settle for less? why aren’t you seeing that you deserve better? i see that you fall back into routines, and you hope it will be different; better, but it never changes. you are an incredibly radiant soul who should only accept the treatment that they deserve. you should be surrounded by positivity and happiness for miles and miles. why don’t you let yourself?

Sagittarius: who are you so afraid of? why are you letting them control you? let go of the past, they do not define who you are. focus on yourself. i know you have an amazing soul.

Capricorn: do you see the world differently now? ever since it happened, have you taken a closer look at the society you were born into? maybe colors seem a little more dull now. maybe the lines are becoming abstract and you cant tell whats real, and what you have imagined. is there still even a difference? you don’t know. but you keep on living because you know the future is brighter than this colorless gray palette. keep going forward.

Aquarius: tell me why you’ve done it all, but never really lived it? you’ve had so many experiences, but did you ever stop in the moment to actually live it? you’re always thinking about the past. if you don’t stop to actually live life, it’ll be over before you know it. be present.

Pisces: why are you still blaming the world for your actions? can’t you accept responsibility? sometimes, karma has nothing to do with your choices. your words have a lot more power than you think they do. take a look around, pisces. this is your world. make decisions you are proud of, and understand that not everything unfortunate happens because of bad luck. you may be the root of your own problems.

So here’s the thing.

I love the ‘Viktor lives an extravagant lifestyle and wants to shower Yuuri in rich things’ headcanon as much as the next person. I think it stems from my working class fantasies of someday marrying someone who wants to love and support me unconditionally both emotionally and financially. But who doesn’t.

That being said, I see a lot of people portraying Viktor as sitting down with Yuuri in the planning process for their wedding (And for the rest of their lives) and saying things like Ten-tier wedding cake celebrity chef catering Armani tuxes white doves all-rose centerpieces g o l d and all I can imagine–and, granted, this is just my personal view of Yuuri as a character; Yuuri who I over-identify with on a good day–is Yuuri sitting there and going HOLY! SHIT! and completely shutting down.

And maybe this is how Viktor starts off as. Viktor probably comes from money originally, and we as a fandom have discussed this to kingdom come. We’ve also concluded that even if your personal headcanon is Viktor achieving his own wealth, he’s…well, wealthy. This is more or less canon at this point. Viktor is, perhaps not necessarily The One Percent, but definitely high upper middle class, and definitely not afraid to show it.

And he’s good! So good! He’s genuine with it, he wants to spend all of his money on his fiance and his dog and their wedding and the life they’re going to build together! He wants to buy a big place to live, a house or a condo he doesn’t care, and fill it with family and love!

But Yuuri doesn’t come from wealth. He comes from a family that probably sometimes struggled to pay bills. Sometimes, he probably sat in his bedroom and listened to his parents decide whether they were going to get the car fixed, or replace the washing machine, because they couldn’t afford to do both at the same time. I have this idea that Toshiya probably got a second job to pay for Yuuri’s ballet and ice skating lessons, and that it’s probably something Yuuri felt very bad about–and still does to a certain extent.

And he’s paying them back, now. He’s winning, sometimes, and whatever he doesn’t need to feed himself goes straight back home. But then he gets engaged to literally the most successful figure skater in the history of forever.

And maybe sometimes he can’t deal?

I think that Viktor is the kind of person who would realize fairly quickly that Yuuri is uncomfortable with grant displays. Yuuri is the kind of person who doesn’t like PDA; he doesn’t hug his parents after five years away because it’s just not what’s done in his culture. Of course he would be uncomfortable with sitting next to his fiance with the wedding planner while the words filet mignon dinner come out of his mouth.

And I think it would come out to something like this: Viktor realizes that it isn’t the size or extravagance of the wedding that he wants to badly, but the symbolism. He wants something beautiful. Something lovely, and intricate, and full of meaning. Viktor has been confusing expense with significance his entire life, and I think that this is the moment where he realizes that that’s not the case.

And yes, some of those elements are expensive. Blue rose aren’t cheap, and neither is champagne. But Makkachin is well-trained and only has to be pointed in the right direction to bring them their rings–and he works for liver treats. And Phichit is a wonderful photographer for a man whose major played a background role to his skating career. And the day Viktor and Yuuri asked Hiroko and Toshiya Katsuki if they could have their wedding at the Onsen was the day that Viktor realized, truly realized, that he had gained not only a lover, a life partner, but a family.

It’s not the wedding Viktor imagined–except, it was never going to be, because Viktor doesn’t think he ever quite imagined getting married to someone.

Of course, the fact that Viktor spent well over their honeymoon budget is…something that Yuuri supposes he can tolerate.

The Wrong Number

Jensen Ackles x Reader

Summary : you accidentally texted the wrong person one night who happens to be a major celebrity. And from that day on, you two can’t seem to stop talking to each other.

Read Part One Here

A/N : SO many of you asked for a part two, so here it is!! I hope you all enjoy!!

Warning ; language?

Work had been such a pain in the ass this entire week. You were exhausted and annoyed, and part of you wanted to quit.

But it was your dream. Even if you were playing as assistant for now, you knew it would all be worth it in the end.

Luckily you had someone to keep you from going crazy.

Jensen had texted you almost every single day since you had accidentally texted him instead of your best friend, Bonnie.

He was the only thing that you looked forward too. Which you weren’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.

Having someone to vent too, talk to about anything and not feel judged. It was beyond the best feeling in the world. It almost felt like you had known him forever.

But tonight, you two planned to finally FaceTime each other.

No more hiding behind texts.

You were kind of nervous, but also excited. To talk to the actor you had crushed on forever. It all felt so surreal.

Laying in bed, you saw your phone light up and his name appear on the screen. Immediately your stomac fluttered.

“You got this.” You whispered to yourself.

You gently pressed the green button answer the call, and breathed in a sharp breath.

Once the picture cleared, and you were finally able to see his face, you Felt like you were on cloud nine.

Jensen had a big smile on his face, as he looked at his screen. There you were on his phone. No longer a still picture that he looked at almost everyday. You were mesmerizing to say the least, breath taking.

He was excited and nervous about this moment since you agreed to FaceTime the night before. It was the only thing he could think about, which kept messing him up during his scenes.

“Your voice is a lot higher than I imagined.” You chuckled. “I guess I was expecting Dean’s voice.”

Jensen belted out into laughter, his head cocking back. Once he was able to compose himself, he cleared his throat. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” He said, making his voice low.

After a while, you both went back and forth for what seemed like an eternity. He talked about his life as an actor and how much he enjoyed it. And you talked about your life.

There was never a dull moment which was weird since you were used to those awkward pauses and short conversations with the guys you dated.

“Okay-” you said, laying on your side as you plopped your phone down beside you, with a pillow holding it up so you didn’t have to use your hand. “What’s your favorite prank you’ve done on set?”

Jensen purses his lips and thought just for a second before remembering the craziest thing he had done.

“Well this one time, Jared and I wanted to mess with the new guy, which in this case was misha.” He said. “Well while he was taking a shower in his trailer, Jared and I snuck in, took all of his clothes and towels and left an elephant g-string. Let’s just say, he wasn’t too thrilled.”

“Oh my god.” You laughed so hard, your entire body was shaking. Your stomach constricted and you couldn’t stop.

Jensen watched you through his screen, admiring the pure sound of your laughter. He decided to take a screenshot, to remember this moment forever.

“Oh my god!” You said once again. “I can only imagine what he looked like.”

“Yeah–"he chuckled. “Wasn’t a pretty sight.”
Jensen leaned back in his chair, and rubbed his eyes as he yawned. Tilting his head back.

“Tired, old man?” You teased.
He returned his gaze back to his screen, and flashed a smirk. “Just a little.”

“I can go so you can get some sleep.”

Jensen sighed, wishing to see you in person. To feel you and actually meet you. It’s only been two weeks, but it’s been the best two weeks of his life. No one has ever made him feel the way you made him feel. It was strange.
He didn’t want to hang up, let alone stop talking to you. If he could, he would stay on the phone forever.

“Not yet.” He said. “I don’t want to say bye yet.”
Your lips curved into a soft smile, feeling your stomach flutter.

“Me neither.” You muttered.

Jensen walked over to his bed, and laid down. His body resting into the mattress.

This was the moment he was going to cherish forever. The first night you two actually spoke to each other, and it was everything he imagined and more.

“Comfortable?” You asked.

He smiled. “Yeah, feels good to finally lay in bed.”

“I know what you mean.” You chuckled. “I look forward to it every day.”

“Well now you have something else to look forward too.” He said.

You cocked your brow, intrigued by his statement. “Oh yeah? What else do I have to look forward too?”

“Me.”

youtube

I made a Twitter thread a while ago about applying for jobs and I also got an ask about some of the specifics about how I wound up here, so in spite of the fact that this video makes me C R I N G E, I’m gonna share it and we’re gonna do some STORY TIME. Mostly this is me sharing the specifics of my own, personal story but maybe there’s some broadly useful stuff in here, idk.

Also, a fair warning that my ~*story time*~ got away from me, so I’m putting it under a cut. The tl;dr version that’s more broadly useful is:

  1. job applications are learning opportunities and you should make sure you’re learning things as you go about it
  2. your application should be a tailored narrative of your career trajectory
  3. don’t sell yourself short or forget that you hold cards in the process as well
  4. the goal is a good fit for everybody, and that includes you; not every job is going to be that good fit for you

but then, I’m not a hiring manager so, really, wtf do I know

(seriously, take everything I say for the anecdotal nonsense that it is)

I found the listing for my job here on Tumblr. At the time I was freelancing and mostly pretty happy with it, but since I wrote my MA thesis on Nerdfighteria and had always kind of wanted to get into video, this looked like a really cool opportunity to work on great stuff & learn a lot.

The application asked for a reel, which I did not have, since I was mostly doing Virtual Assistant work at that time.

A huge part of why I applied was because I thought the application process itself would be a great learning opportunity.

I really didn’t expect to get the job. I can’t stress this part enough. Like, really didn’t even think I’d get an interview.

The whole thing, to me, was just a good exercise. It had been a while since I had applied for anything (I was freelancing on referrals from the get-go) and mostly I was eager to see what, exactly, I could put together in lieu of a reel.

I spent a week working my way through some Lynda lessons on After Effects (this wasn’t my first time using it, but I had only used it for suuuuper basic stuff). Much of what is happening in this video is stuff I figured out how to do while I was making it. That was, again, the point.

I bought a shit ton of green fabric. I rounded up all the lamps I could find. I had a vague knowledge of the fact that shadows = bad for keying, but really knew fuck all about lights. (tbh, lighting is still kind of a mysterious magic trick to me.) I spent probably an hour moving the lamps around, standing in front of them, recording it, and then looking at it until I could find what looked the least shadow-y.

I also watched a SciShow video on the slowest speed setting so that I could try to reverse engineer the basics of what was happening. I was literally just looking at it to see, “ok, but can I do that?” (Answer: not really, but A for effort.)

I wrote a very silly script that was a very carefully selected understanding of how I had been spending my time. This part is super important and broadly applicable whenever you are applying for a job: a huge part of applying for a job is creating a narrative.

(Important note: this does not mean lying.)

Obviously your life has (probably) not actually been a series of carefully chosen moments leading you to this ONE. JOB. But it’s important to find ways to talk about the things you’ve done that highlight how/why they are relevant. In my experience, humans have a pretty natural tendency to do this narrative reframing of their past as having led them clearly to their future. Use that. What is the version of your trajectory that most sounds like you’ve been gearing up for this job all along, acquiring skills both obvious and unexpected that would be useful here.

That’s the guiding principle of everything I’m saying in this video.

It’s also worth noting, though, that I laid my cards on the table. That is, I wasn’t trying to lie about anything and I was up front about where I was at. It wouldn’t have served anybody to try to be misleading about that fact.

So that was the application process, for me. It’s a tricky balance of being honest but also a carefully selected kind of honest. And keeping in mind that this is as much about deciding whether a company is actually good fit for you as whether you’re a good fit for them. I remember during my college admissions process, one school that I thought I really wanted to go to had a weird religious essay on the form that caught me off guard and made me reevaluate whether that was a good fit. Likewise, I honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the 9-5 thing. Freelancing had lots of great perks that offset some of the overwhelming stress.

Something else that I did, that I recommend with a very cautious asterisk, was googling the people interviewing me. Again, partially this was, “OK, I know these shows they make, and I know vlogbrothers videos, but who are all of the other people who I would spend my days with.”

I had no idea who Nick was before I started, because I never paid much attention to the credits. But he was the one who called me to arrange the interview, so I googled him and found a great interview he did about why Crash Course matters, and there were a few specific things he said that stood out to me as, “yes, this is also why I think this matters and why I want this job.”

The asterisk here is: don’t be creepy. It’s a hard line to walk, but, ya know, don’t talk about your interviewer’s swarm check-ins or whatever.

In my case, I knew that in addition to concentrating on that narrative of how and why I should end up here, I had these other points to hit on in the interview. Again, don’t lie. This isn’t about saying shit solely because you think someone wants to hear it; this was about leveraging a piece of common ground I knew we had.

Lastly, I’d add that it’s good to be careful about how you walk the line between being excited about a company’s work and being a little overzealous. It is, at the end of the day, still a job, and you don’t want to come across as so enthusiastic that maybe you’re missing that point. That’s a really nuanced thing for which I have no easy answers.

A lot of this stuff is just luck. I gave a lot of advice where I could, but, at the same time, there’s also this weird combination of personalities that make a thing work or not. There’s a thing in hiring called the “airport test” which is: “could I be stuck in an airport with this person?” and that is a whole other weird, wholly qualitative element of hiring that ends up making a huge difference.

There’s the official bits and pieces that make up a job application, but then there’s the trickier interpersonal stuff about how that job fits into a team. Something not explicitly stated in my application, but which I’ve since learned mattered is that what I lacked in technical know-how, I made up for in cultural knowledge about YouTube. My manager is a former film school teacher who learned the YouTube stuff on the job; he knew he could teach me anything technical I didn’t know much more easily than he could teach someone the culture in which we create.

IDK. I could legitimately talk about this forever.

· YA LIT MEME: eight friendships (3/8) - will herondale & jem carstairs

“there will be other lives.” jem held his hand out, and for a moment they clasped hands, as they had done during their parabatai ritual. “the world is a wheel,” he said. “when we rise or fall, we do it together.”
will tightened his grip on jem’s hand. “well, then,” he said, “since you say there will be another life for me, let us both pray i do not make as colossal a mess of it as i have this one.“

I’m just???? I always forget how god damn intimate this bullshit is. The way Hannibal holds onto it for just a breath too long after Will takes it in his hand. This feels like a touch. It feels like a kiss. And for what this means to Hannibal, to be sharing in such an experience with someone–with Will–for the first time, it might as well be so much more than that. It might just be the most intimate moment of his life up to that point.

it’s funny when people tell me i dislike taylor swift because she had a relationship with harry styles.

like. it definitely doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that she refuses to take responsibility for her actions and instead blames others for her reactions, promotes a brand of feminism that is exclusive to straight white women and only benefits her, consistently excludes people of color until she needs them or their culture, shamelessly swerves around political conversation and the condemning of white supremacy as to not offend a subsect racist fans and parents of fans who line her pockets, for years has dragged a man’s name and reputation through the mud to play up her poor little white girl image, had the audacity to get on stage and lie about the situation so she could be praised for a moment of faux female empowerment, paraded around with the new “love of her life” conveniently at the same time she was exposed for being a liar in attempt to draw well-deserved scrutiny away from her, and now is attempting to reclaim the snake label she was so rightly affixed with without ever apologizing for or acknowledging a damn thing she’s done.

but nah, you’re right. i’m pressed because she got that late 2012 harry dick and i just can’t stand it.

Okay hear me out.

All I want in life is for Lup to duel for someone’s soul using the fiddle, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” -style (with comparably amazing fiddle-playing) while in full reaper regalia. Like, full suit, skull motif, wicked smile and playing this fiddle with terrifying precision against this necromancer with captive souls who did not account for her musical talent before issuing this challenge.

I would also be happy with the same scenario involving Kravitz. Actually, Kravitz has probably already done this, it’s probably one of the stories that gets told around the office most often. Kravitz goes to pull out his own fiddle and Lup just pushes past him like “nah it’s my turn” and fiddles this unsuspecting necromancer into the ground. (And then totally takes his fiddle because that’s how this goes, it’s right there in the song them’s the rules.)

i wrote a letter for you. i put all of my feelings and hopes that came to mind when i think of you. if you look hard enough, you’ll see the tear drop stains that i left because i never wanted to be writing these kind of words to you.
i miss you every day that passes and i am filled with so much regret over the mistakes and pain i’ve caused you. you were vibrant, and beautiful. you brought so much light to my life and i took every single bit of it for granted. you weren’t perfect and we made our own mistakes, but the way i left you erased everything you could’ve done to me. when i realized that i had truly lost you, a light left my eyes, a weight dropped straight onto my chest. feelings of guilt and regret washed over me like a cold shower you never wanted to step under. the moment that i walked away, i believed i was doing what was best and you were the one that was going to be left alone and hurt, but i soon realized that i was only hurting myself.
i took that letter that i wrote to you. i hated it and didn’t want any of it to be real. so i dug in my drawers and found the only lighter i own and at a pure moment of impulse, i lit the letter on fire, and watched it burn.
