Walt Disney with University of Oregon Athletic Director Leo Harris (second from the left) wearing matching Oregon Ducks letterman jackets

Starting in 1947, Donald Duck became the official mascot of the University of Oregon’s sports teams. Walt Disney didn’t draw up a deal or even make a formal agreement, he simply shook Leo Harris’ hand and gave the okay. A few years after his death when the Disney Company was questioning whether the University had ever gotten permission or was infringing on their property, to prove an agreement had been reached this picture of Disney and Harris wearing matching letterman jackets emblazoned with Donald Duck was produced and a formal deal was finally worked out between the University and Disney.
