Field trip: Urban sketcher Don Colley

Nothing pleases us more at Found Objects than giving old, unloved ephemera a higher purpose. Urban sketcher Don Colley takes old, mostly blank, ledgers and appointment books and  brings them back to life with the vibrant drawings he creates on his travels.

He’s on a road trip across the country now, doing demos and showing his sketchbooks at colleges, art forums and stores. A rapt audience at Artist and Display in Milwaukee yesterday got a glimpse of how he works, the materials he uses and  how he thinks. (Thanks are due here to Artist and Display Creative Director Nora Hackenberg, who is responsible for the wonderful lecture, demo and course program at this family-owned art store).

Drawn aboard Amtrak from Albany to Chicago. This fellow was watching an episode of Son of Anarchy. When I returned home, I read one of the actors, Johnny Lewis, died in a fight at his apartment complex.

Basilica of St. Francis, evening of Sept. 15. About 10 minutes after I started the drawing, a car pulled up and parked in front of me, so… had to include it.”  Don Colley
