Doctor Who - The Husbands of River Song (Christmas Special 2015)

Control panels - Starliner Bridge

Over the course of Series 9 I designed a lot of consoles and interfaces, with the Xmas Special needing the most work. For the Starliner Harmony & Redemption, several different methods were employed to bring the bridge to life.

Some new console shapes were mocked up by Michael Pickwoad and Stephen Cooper (1st image), as well as old ones taken out of storage and refurbed. With these shapes in mind, I started the design of the first panel.

I usually mock up control panels in black and white (2nd image) to get a sense of the geometry and balance. On jobs such as these, I usually have about a day to figure out the core design of the symbols, type and layout ratio, another day to actually design the final layouts for specific panels, and then about 2 days to get the panels laser cut and printed. Due to these (terrifying) time limitations, it’s normally a case of repeating the same details over and over again in different layouts.

Once the colours were finalised (3rd image) 15 panels were designed including one 8x4′ one (4th image). The majority of these were printed directly onto milk perspex, which both diffuses the back-lightning nicely, but also gives the colours a wonderful richness (5, 6, 7th images).

To add a bit of visual interest, Tom Munday animated some elements of the console layouts, and these were loaded onto 3 iPads in the forward consoles. For these 3 panels, the graphic was reverse-printed onto clear perspex, with a blank section in the middle. The iPad was mounted against this perspex, with the end result being the illusion of the video and the print graphic being flush underneath the same gloss surface (8th image).

Ultimately, none of this was ever really seen in any great detail, but hopefully it added a bit of depth and detail to a fun set.

To me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of color, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange wild man who roamed the fields of Provence, was not only the world’s greatest artist but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.

  • mom:so who is your favorite character?

  • me:I obviously adore her too
  • me:and that's my husband

  • me:aw look this is my little cinnamon bun
  • me:that's my bae

  • mom:but... who do you like the most?

So yeah. For U.S. customers, Netflix and Hulu no longer carry @doctorwho, following Amazon Prime yanking it last month. As usual, they’re all pointing fingers at the other side, but it really doesn’t matter who’s to blame.  There is no longer a legal way to stream Doctor Who in the U.S.

Supposedly, the BBC is planning to launch its own streaming service in the U.S. eventually, but I’ve seen unconfirmed rumors that Doctor Who may not be part of that package.

Obviously, this is an INCREDIBLY SHORT SIGHTED thing to do during the 2016 hiatus, since it’s going to drive fans to desperate measures (i.e. piracy). DVDs are insanely expensive in the U.S., especially classic Who. (The only Fifth Doctor episode I don’t own is The Awakening, inexplicably $65).

We’ve got a Doctor in Distress situation here, folks.

Complain to Hulu. Complain to Netflix. Complain to Amazon. Complain to the BBC. Let them know just how big the demand is, and how stupid they are to be pushing away fans now, of all times, when the show is off TV for a year. The louder we yell, the more likely that somebody will see reason and find a way to cash in on a significant customer base.

Make the call. Tweet your annoyance and tag accordingly. Pass it on.
