So I've never been more suicidal and I'm purposefully sabotaging my own life but I ate something for the first time in 3 days today so I need someone to be proud of me for baby steps.

i came out of hospital pretty bloated (it’s gone down a bit now) but i’m so proud of myself because i just brushed it off and didn’t fuss much about it and loved my body through it!!! it’s only something little, but i’m feeling positive with my body, even though i’m pretty stressed with everything else, my body isn’t on the list, and that’s just something i’m proud of!! my body is my home. it holds my soul. my heart and my mind. and, that’s enough to love it endlessly. and, i’m proud of all you warriors that try your hardest to love your body with bloating, or scars, or marks, or anything else!!! you are doing great!! i love body posi and the outlook it gives you on life, to just go out there and live your life whatever body you have!! just loving body posi right now and want to change the world with it! we can do thissssssss 💛🌎✨🌸⭐️

So I just did a post about how I manage my time and my daily schedule and such, and I felt like this part is really important and was getting lost in the minutiae of my day, so I made it a separate post. I was talking about various ways in which my life is not necessarily “normal”, like how I go to bed at 7:30, which people treat as one of my eccentricities, and rightly so. But while it is weird it speaks to the crux of my life philosophy, which I’ve spoken about before as regards dealing with anon hate:

My time and attention are finite resources and they have a value I can bestow where I wish. If something is not necessary to survive, does not solve a problem, or does not provide joy, I stop doing it.

I pay my bills and do my dishes and wash my clothes because you have to do those things. I engage in activism and try to stay current on the news because I believe I have a moral duty to contribute to society, and I run because it’s good for my heart and my body. I have friendships, engage in fandom, play the ukulele, write, go to concerts and movies and art galleries because it brings me joy to do so.

Going to bed early solves a problem for me: I wasn’t doing anything useful with that time anyway, I wasn’t enjoying myself or feeling happy. If I wasn’t getting any benefit from that time, how could I put it to better use? Sleeping is beneficial, so I tried that, and it worked; I get more sleep and I don’t miss anything I can’t catch up with. Work doesn’t make me especially happy or fulfill me in ways we could all wish, but that’s okay. Work is necessary to survive, so I do it. I don’t date much because I tried dating semi-recently and the promise of future joy did not outweigh the lack of joy that dating itself brought to my life; it was painful, ugly, and boring, and so I stopped doing it. 

The dating thing may change in the future, if eventually the promise of a relationship becomes more enticing, but it’s an example of how the pursuit of happiness is non-standard, and you are allowed to weigh the cost against the payoff based on your own personal feelings, not on society’s dictates. Because it turns out when you are doing what makes you happy, when you feel joy, you could give two shits about what everyone else thinks should make you happy. 

Sometimes, what brings me joy is sitting on the couch listening to a podcast I’ve already heard ten times and playing a stupid mindless flash game; I often catch myself thinking “I could be doing something more useful, something cooler, something more active” and remind myself “But this is making me happy, and it’s what I’m capable of doing right now.”

“Does this make me happy” or, if you’re struggling with happiness, “Does this calm and soothe me” is a great metric for what you should be doing in life when you are on your own time. It’s a good way to check in with yourself and lead yourself towards a more fulfilling life on your own terms. 

If you are out at a bar with friends, stop and ask, does this make me happy? Because there is no way in which asking that does not help. If being at a bar doesn’t make you happy and if it’s the only time you see your friends, maybe it’s time for a change; you are now free to pursue something that will make you happy. If being at a bar doesn’t make you happy but your friends do, and this is one way to bond with them of many, then it’s a cost with a later benefit, and you’ve now become conscious that while you aren’t happy right this minute, you are paying into future joy. And if you like being out at a bar with friends and are having a good time, then you’ve reaffirmed to yourself that you are happy and this is where you want to be. And affirming that you are feeling joy is a great thing to do. 

You don’t have to be happy all the time – but on your own time, when work and chores and the duties of the day are done, you should devote yourself to finding joy in whatever form that takes, be it a nap or a party or a date or your kids or, I don’t know, watching people make fake food on YouTube. 

Believing that your time and attention have value and should only be bestowed on the worthy means coming to believe that you have value, which is so hard to do that I’ll take any shortcut I can get. Devoting your time time and attention only to what is necessary or what is pleasurable means learning a great deal about what you value, and I truly believe leads you to a more fulfilled life.

So when people ask me about time management, I have real tips and tricks to offer – but I think the most important think I can offer is the suggestion that whatever time you have, you should believe it has value because it is yours, and you should direct it appropriately. 

This is why I left:
I saw a life with you. Not in a romantic way, but the way where when I looked at the future I saw you sitting at my dining table, confessing your worries for the 1,800th time. I saw you meeting the love of my life and introducing me to yours. I saw you loving my kids like they were your own and I saw us loving each other - platonically, simply.
But through our late night conversations about the world and about our futures - mere kids aspiring to be something great in a city that was always so poor - you spoke more about the way my smile lit your world up instead of what you’d do to create your own. You stopped fantasizing about meeting the love of your life and insisted that I was already in it, despite the fact that I said it wasn’t what I wanted. That this wasn’t how it was supposed to be.
I caught the lingering stares and the subtle comments. More than anything, I noticed how we changed; how you tried to force something on me that I didn’t want, and how you kept getting hurt in the process - silently blaming me for not reciprocating feelings that I didn’t harbor in the first place. 

Three years later and I feel the hatred steam off of you when you see me on the corner of my block. I ripped you off of me like a dying limb because I knew that if I held on to you, you’d  cling for dear life - never looking forward to another version of your own future again. I left because I’d rather hurt you now and have you move on in due time, as opposed to not at all. I didn’t want you meeting the love of my life with a cold smile and tension wrapped around your first handshake. I didn’t want you to go home at night with no one beside you. I didn’t want you to look at my kids and wish they were ours. I didn’t want you to look backwards. I needed you to look forward.

I broke your heart for your own good. But believe me when I say that you broke mine, too.

okay, so I’ve seen multiple posts just today that were basically like “haha who ever said adulthood was having your life together and everything figured out, I’m 28 and real life is drowning me as much as it ever was”

and like…the answer to that is…adults. adults said that. generation after generation, the narrative from adults to young people has been, “you are a dumb kid who doesn’t know the world or yourself but I am a Grownup with Life Experience™, and that’s why you’re supposed to do what I tell you, that’s why I don’t need to listen to your thoughts and feelings, that’s why society imagines me as a full human being and you as something that’s going to grow into a full human being.”

there’s a great book all about this that I’ve had a lot of my students read - Childhood and Society, by a sociologist named Nick Lee. Lee argues that the child/adult binary is a socially constructed one, based, like any other such binary, on an imagined idea of clearly oppositional characteristics. specifically, he says that children are imagined as incomplete, unstable (as in their lives and experiences are constantly changing, not as in mentally unstable), and dependent, and adults as complete, stable, and independent. those characteristics don’t match up to reality if you think about them too hard for even a moment - no one is truly independent, adults’ lives aren’t stable, what does judging a human being’s “completeness” even mean - but it doesn’t matter, because our culture is so obsessed with believing in them.

and adults being forced to pretend they’re complete and independent and living stable lives is one of the toxic ways all this plays on people of all ages.

I really hope that seeing my generation talk like this - just flat-out admit that we don’t know what the hell we’re doing any better than we did ten years ago - means we have the potential to break this cycle. but honestly, entering my 30s and having seen so many people my age turn into those adults who act like they have life so well figured out compared to those dumb kids, it doesn’t seem likely. we might be a little better than we could’ve been, but too many of us are going down that tired old road of transitioning from talking about how much smarter we are than our parents to talking about how much smarter we are than our kids, just like every generation does when it hits this age.

I guess what I’m saying is, please, young 20-somethings of today, be better ten years from now than we are.

There aren’t many people who love Mondays, and that is why we decided to share a list of couple of things we try to do every Sunday to prepare for new week and enter it in our best shape. Hope you find something here useful ^^

 1. Write down everything you need to do and everything you need to remember about this week. 

Planning is the obvious key to being organised, so we don’t need to explain why you need to do it. What you, however, need to remember about is to write down everything- literally everything, from birthdays and tests, to watering plants and taking out the trash. That way, it’ll be easier for you to create specific to-do-lists for each day of the week and not forget about the, seemingly, little, but not less important, things.

 2. Check the weather forecast and check if you have appropriate clothes in your wardrobe 

Although this might sound a little uptight for some, we prefer to believe it’s actually easier to do your laundry on Sunday when you have some free time (and even deal with ironing and folding) and have clothes ready, than to run around like a drunk gremlin on a Wednesday morning, looking for clean clothes, because it’s suprisingly cold and you don’t have any clean sweaters. 

 3. Pack your bag just before going to bed 

Chances are, at that point, you won’t take anything out of it, and you will have your bag ready in the morning, therefore avoiding the drunk gremlin situation mentioned before 

 4. Clean your room

 If you are only to clean your room once a week, do it on Sunday. Open windows, clean your desk, vacuum and throw out the trash. That way you’ll begin new week in a fresh and clean environment and there is nothing that’ll make you feel more productive.

 5. Try to finish your work

 Obviously. But remember that all-nighters should always be a last resort and that not so many things actually deserve them.

 6. Call your friends and family

 No matter how busy are, you should have sometime in your week designated only for contacting your friends and family, updating them on you life and hearing about theirs. It’s better to talk with someone once a week, than not talk to them at all (obviously), even if at that point you may only be able to have a 30 minutes conversation over the phone. And Sundays are great for that, mostly because most people are more able (and willing) to talk on weekends than in the middle of a busy week.

 7. Do something for yourself (don’t overdo it though) 

Pamper yourself a little. Watch an episode of your favourite show, or have a very nice dinner. You worked hard this weekend and you deserve it. But be real with what you can, and what you can’t do- if you’re really busy, going to a cinema and a dinner later may not be the greatest of ideas, and maybe this week, getting a coffee in a nice cafe will have to do. 

 8. Workout

 Workouts are important and super great and you should do them not only on a Sunday. But what makes Sunday workouts really great, is that usually you have time for a longer and nicer one and they give you a motivation boosts which last till Monday 

 9. Plan your meals for the week 

You don’t need to get them ready right away, but you should have a general idea what you’ll be eating this week. So you can plan you shopping and cooking and cleaning (and yes, we know, we get boring with this constant planning thing, but it really is crucial) 

 10. Avoid all screens 

30 minutes before bedtime It’s a general rule and you should do it every day, not only on Sunday. It’ll be easier for you to fall asleep if you give your brain (and eyes) some time to relax 

 11. Go to bed slightly earlier and wake up slightly earlier

 Try to go to bed 30 minutes earlier and to wake up 30 minutes earlier. It (for reasons unknown to us ^^) makes wonders for your productivity and motivation

 12. Take a nice, long bath 

You should never underestimate good baths abilities to wash away the whole week, and there is nothing nicer than going to bed on a Sunday with super smooth and moisturised skin, and waking up on Monday already clean and smelling nice ^^

 13. Do something that’ll help you improve yourself 

 Do one lesson on Duolingo. Write another page of your book. Stretch. Improve everyday, specially on Sunday

 14. If you have time, prepare yourself food for Monday 

 Mondays aren’t great, but having food makes them slightly better

 15. Try to relax

 There is a reason why we created weekend.You can’t (and shouldn’t try to) cram the whole weekend- try to relax and enter new week with rested mind

Do you think it's fair to start a relationship with someone if you're depressed?

Hi,
This is a very interesting concept. I realize that at the inception of a budding (or potential) relationship with someone, it is best practice to showcase your most refined and flawless self. You want to the person of interest to think you’re perfect, you want them to like you. People are inherently flawed, however. The nuance between individuals makes us exactly that; individual. One’s allergy to peanuts, phobia of heights, reluctance to anything spicy (me af), susceptibility to depression, everything about us makes us who we are. When gauging the morality of a decision, especially when it’s not exclusively your emotions being weighed in the equation, I’m not so sure I have enough information to answer the question you’re asking. What I do believe is true in life, is love is the most beautiful thing we as humans do, make and feel. Without love, life would be utterly meaningless. We need it for purpose. We need it for passion. Love makes colors more vibrant, sounds more euphonious, food more delicious. We as humans have been able to manufacture a great many things, like clothes to keep us warm and drugs to make us “happy”, but something we cannot develop in a laboratory is love. It is something we cannot buy, it is something we cannot cheat. True love is the most precious and authentic display we can gift this world.
So, do I think it’s fair or unfair to start a relationship with someone if you’re depressed? I think it’s selfish to deny yourself and the world the opportunity to love. Be honest with your partner. Relationships take work, but love is in fact the most beautiful thing in this life.

Some tips that work for me, maybe for you.

1. When I don’t want to read scripture: Pray for 4-5 minutes to God. Just confess it. Tell him why you feel that way, and if you don’t know why, tell Him that.

If you’re watching tv or netflix, or on social media– turn them off and walk away for 10 minutes with the Bible open in front of you. Don’t do anything else. It will be hard to sit there for ten minutes not doing anything.

2.When I don’t feel like praying: Just do it.

It doesn’t have to be out loud - But if you can you should: it seems to help keep my thoughts clearer. Usually for me, there is some thought I am having that is making me not feel like praying.

Or, (2.A) Think of prayer differently.

Sometimes I catch myself caught up in formality of prayer and it can really get in the way. I want to be respectful towards God, and you definitely should too, but I think it is better sometimes to just say what you need to say. God understands how you are feeling and why, even if it is not respectful towards Him. Sometimes we don’t share these kinds of things in prayer because we are afraid God will be upset with us for saying, and we feel guilty for even thinking it. Some, like myself, sometimes will go as far as to completely deny we think and feel that way. IT DOES YOU NO GOOD TO HOLD THAT IN AND DENY IT. The sooner you confess it, the sooner you can ask God to help change your heart and mind to think rightly about God and your life. 

3. When I don’t feel like doing anything:

- Take a shower: I don’t know why but taking a shower, getting fresh clothes on and smelling nice seems to put my head back on straight. It somehow makes me ready to do things.

- Eat something/ Drink something: Dehydration and not eating can seriously sap me of my will and energy. Lemon water is great for me because it doesn’t taste so bland. Sometimes I had stevia to sweeten the deal. Making fruit smoothies is a quick way I get fed and renew energy too.

- Call or text a friend; also ask for prayer: Just do this one. I don’t have details. I just know it works.

Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that - that is what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself.

mmmmnn martin & finn’s characters are just. really interesting to me tbh heres me rambling a bunch

martin always pushes his problems away and never looks back? found his long lost son? just escape the citadel. dooming a whole species in The Visitor? gotta build this rocket. nope. bye. see ya (x)

but then finn realizes this, gets mad at him about it and launches him into space, but it doesn’t really leave him unscathed because now when he messes up he thinks, shit, i’m selfish like my dad

but he’s really not like his dad, because finn was Literally offered the choice to escape all his troubles and burdens and finn accepted that he couldn’t run away from everything and decided to accept everything in his life, the good and the bad, while his dad just. chose to fling himself off their plane of existence

(and semi unrelated but finn Does know how to face his mistakes and apologize for them, Bun Bun was a great episode)

the really fun thing i like is that when he realizes this, finn tries to use it to help others (helper genes hell yeah!!) and tells the other humans in the islands that it’s okay to feel pain, it’s okay to have troubles in your life and face them with everything else. (like frieda believed in, i guess. there’s more to life than just pure happiness, and that’s okay, that’s what makes it great)

it’s something martin could never do, it’s something finn learned to embrace, and it’s really fun to watch and god i love adventure time good fucking BYE

edit: semi unrelated too but finn and minnie’s dynamic is also pretty cool bc while finn learns to balance the good and the bad minnie doesn’t take problems very well either

she throws herself away (literally) into her Helper work and insists finn stays at the islands so he’ll never be hurt again

so, anyway, finn is great, and i rly love AT’s take on the Life’s A Big Grey Mess moral

Creating Dynamic Characters That Feel Real

Despite what people may have led you to believe, the plot or structure is not the most important thing about your story–whether it’s a screenplay, short story, novel. That’s not what makes the story real and important. That’s not why your readers care.

Characters are the most important part of your story. Without them, you have nothing. Your story is nothing.

If you want your readers to find your story complex, compelling, and dynamic, then your characters have to be complex, compelling, and dynamic. You’re thinking, “Oh, that’s easy. I’ve already done that.” Your babies are complicated. They’re beautiful but damaged. Intelligent but socially awkward. They want to be an astronaut; they want to save the world.

Sorry, but you’re full of shit.

Characters aren’t just characters, they’re real people, even if they only exist in ink and paper and your mind rather than in flesh and blood. They need to be as real to your readers as their mother, father, best friend, the person sitting next to them. Otherwise, you have failed. Flesh them out, bring them to life on the page.

Your characters are the heart and soul of your story, and you need to treat them as such. That is your job as a writer. And when you don’t do that, you not only fail your readers and your story, you not only do yourself a great disservice, but you also expose yourself. You reveal something to your readers that you don’t want them to know. As Claudia Hunter Johnson says in her book, Crafting Short Screenplays That Connect (which is an excellent book I recommend you all read), character creation is “an artistic and ethical issue.”

Repeat after me: It is an artistic and ethical issue.
