Riley was quiet, sitting on her bay window, waiting for answers she knows won’t come if she stays this way. But it was easier there as she didn’t have to face the questions and fears that life had put on her way these last few days.

Three days ago, Lucas had finally chosen. Well apparently there wasn’t much of a choice to make. He had asked to meet Maya outside her house, and once there he had told her the truth in the simplest words he could find. “It’s always been Riley.” He had been as kind as possible with Maya, and afterwards she thanked him for the truth and asked him to leave her alone for a while. He had asked if this was the end of their friendship and she had simply shaken her head.

Maya had come to see Riley immediately, telling her the news. She had not cried, and Riley had found it weird.

“Why aren’t you crying? Aren’t you sad?”

“Not that much actually.”

“But why?”

“Because now it’s finally over, and I can look my best friend in the eyes when I talk to her. This whole “triangle” was destroying us, Riles, it was destroying me. Now it’s over. So it’s not that bad. No, it’s actually pretty good.” Maya had smiled at Riley.

Riley had tried to smile back, to no avail. She had looked down, not knowing if she felt this was such good news.

“Hey.” Maya had lifted Riley’s chin so she faced her again. “It’s alright, Riles. He’s chosen you and I understand why. You’re the best person I know, and you deserve someone like him.”

“No, no I can’t. If I pursue whatever there is between Lucas and I this will ruin us for good, and you’ll be unhappy.”

“Are you listening to me Riley? I don’t care. I’m gonna take some days out in Georgia with my mom, and then I’ll come back and it’ll be just like when you met him. I won’t stand in your way and our friendship will be even stronger because of everything we’ve faced this year.”

“Are you sure?”

“Tots. Come here.” Maya had opened her arms wide for Riley to cuddle onto her.

It had been three days already. Lucas had tried and called her several times but Riley had not had the strength to answer him. She didn’t know what to say. Was being with Lucas really what she wanted?

She was taken out of her reverie as she heard a screeching noise behind her. Someone was going up her window. She opened it and immediately recognized the deepest green eyes she’d ever seen.

He entered her room in silence and faced her awkwardly.

They chuckled as old memories flowed back into their mind. Riley looked at the spot next to her and he took it as an invitation to sit.

“Have you been avoiding me?”

“Yes.” There was no denying that, so Riley opted for the truth. “I just… I had a lot on my plate, and without Maya here… I needed to think.”

“Can you talk to me?”

Riley gave him a thankful look. “Not really, Lucas.”

Lucas pursed his lips.

“Anyway, what are you doing here?”

“I had to see you, to see how you were doing. I was getting worried you know?”

“Worried? Oh, Lucas.”

“What? That’s what friends do. They worry about each other, especially when they don’t answer their phone.”

“Are we friends though?” Riley asked a bit too quickly.

“Of course we are. I don’t understand your point of view Riles. Being with you doesn’t mean I’m not your friend anymore. If anything, I’d be more than that. I’d be the person can turn to, always; I’d be the person that would always protect you and defend you; I’d be your number one fan. Although, I am all that already.”

Riley had to control herself not to bite her lip. This boy was definitely too good to be true. She raised her eyes to the ceiling, trying to find the words to be as truthful as she could be.

“I’m scared. I’m scared Lucas, I’ve already told you that.”

Lucas glided to be just a little closer to her. “You said you always want me around. How can I make you understand that I you will always have me around?”

“That’s life. You can’t be sure of what’s going to happen.”

“I guess you’re right. But I am sure of one thing. Give me your hand.”

Riley raised her eyebrows, slowing putting her hand on his. He took it lightly and put it on his chest. She hesitated a few seconds, not understanding what his idea was, but then she heard it. His heartbeat. It was beating really fast. She wondered if it weren’t going to burst out of his chest.

“Are you alright Lucas?” She wondered if he weren’t sick or something.

“That’s what happens when you’re close-by.”

Riley opened her mouth lightly. She had that effect on him? How?

Before letting go of her hand he kissed it oh so lightly and got up.

“See you later, Riles.” He gave her the special smile he has for her and disappeared through the window.

Another day passed. Riley still wasn’t sure of anything, and the lack of Maya in her life was making everything that much harder.

She desperately wanted to see Lucas. That was a fact she had admitted the second he had left her room the other day. She always wanted to see him, she never wanted him not to be there. But was she really ready to be – what do they call it? – a girlfriend? Was she ready to let her guard down and let Lucas lead the way for her for a while? Was it really what that meant, being with someone?

“Ugh! Why?” Riley let herself fall on her bed and pushed a cushion up her face. “Why is it so hard?”

And then, her phone beeped. Riley raised her eyebrows, slowly removing the pillow from her face.

“Could u meet me at Topanga’s tonight plz?” is what Lucas’ text said.

She tried to hesitate, she really did. But her heart was too strong, and she was already looking for an outfit.

Riley presented herself at Topanga’s around 19 that night. She had chosen her lucky outfit – a sparkling purple dress with black tights and dark geen boots. She opened the door only to realize the room was not lit. Well, not with electricity, but with hundreds of candles.

“What?” She heard herself whisper at this wonderful sight.

“Hi.” She hadn’t even noticed him. Lucas was standing in the middle of the room, the candlelight reflecting in his deep green eyes.

“Hey.” She mimicked him, a shy smile spreading on her face. “What’s all this?”

As an answer, Lucas only smiled and gestured to the sofa next to him for her to sit. Only then did she notice the accessory standing beside him: a guitar.

He took it slowly. He looked quite nervous, Riley could see his fingers were shaking just a little bit.

His fingers calmed down when he started playing, and his shaking voice echoed across the empty room.

All alone as you look through the door

Nothing left to see

If it hurts and you can’t take no more

Lay it all on me

No you don’t have to keep it under lock and key

Cause I will never let you down

And if you can’t escape all your uncertainties

Baby I can show you how

Let my love in, let my love in

Lay your heart on me

If you’re hurting, if you’re hurting

Lay it all on me

You can lay it all on me

Lay it all on me

Lay it all on me

If you’re hurting, if you’re hurting

Lay it all on me

If you’re scared when you’re out on your own

Just remember me

Cause I won’t let you go, let alone

Lay it all on me

No you don’t have to keep it under lock and key

Cause I will never let you down

And if you can’t escape all your uncertainties

Baby I can show you how

Let my love in, let my love in

Lay your heart on me

If you’re hurting, if you’re hurting

Lay it all on me

You can lay it all on me

Lay it all on me

Lay it all on me

If you’re hurting, if you’re hurting

Lay it all on me

He played the last cords and sighed at his own bravery. He put down the guitar next to him before looking at Riley straight in her eyes.

“I—I didn’t know you could sing.” Riley managed to say.

Lucas smiled and got up to sit next to her on the couch.

“I can’t. But I worked really hard on this one.”

“You did… it was fantastic, Lucas.”

“So do you agree Riley? Do you believe me? Do you believe the words I’ve repeated over and over, the words I’ve sung and shouted out?”

“I think I do.” Riley slowly moved her hand towards him and intertwined her fingers with his. “That was your moment.”

Lucas beamed. “I think that was one of many to come.”
