dmitry is really in love with anya is all im saying

what she says: im fine

what she means: In a Crowd of Thousands reveals that Dmitry is set on the girl he saw when he was 10 years old, and when Anya remembers it being her, his first instict is to sing in rejoice because he found her again, and afterward leans in to kiss her. Anya isn’t opposed to it at all, but he stops because in that moment he has to realize that she’s not just the girl he’s been in love with all this time, she’s royalty. Dmitry literally finds his dream girl and then immediately after has to face the fact that she’s out of reach. His kneel is out of respect for her position, but it’s also the point where he is forced to accept that his dream was shattered as soon as it came true.

Anastasia rundown Act II

Act II

Holy shit

If you want to know the state I was in seeing this show, during the intermission I could not remember what the first song of act II was. Believe me, that’s not common. I was like half dead.

Anyway, act II-

So their costumes all looked so good omg. And they’re so beautiful. Vlad was doing this weird flapper dance that kept getting applause from the ensemble it was really funny and Anya joined in and Dmitry… well, Dmitry tried.

I love him.

Anyway, again with a set mention, the set freaking made you feel like you were zooming up the Eiffel Tower which was incredible.

When Vlad said he was going to find Lily, Anya straightened his bow tie.

CROSSING A BRIDGE YET AGAIN CHRISTY MADE EYE CONTACT WITH ME. AS I WAS CRYING. SO BEAUTIFUL. SHE SOUNDED SO GOOD. SOOO GOOD

Caroline is funny af and gorgeous as Lily. Also great comedic timing.

This whole cast was ridiculously fantastic I cannot believe the level of perfection.

CLOSE THE DOOR PERSONALLY MURDERED ME!! AGAIN, WHERE IS MBP’S TONY AWARD??! SHE BROKE MY HEART OH MY GOD. SHE ACTED THE SHIT OUT OF THAT. During this scene, it struck me that she looked very frail, but that didn’t happen in any of the others. Mary Beth Peil. A goddess.

Land of yesterday was so much fun oh my god. I was smiling until my cheeks hurt and it was just so entertaining and Caroline was so funny and the choreography and costumes were so stunning. The dancing was so much fun and energetic and I loved it. I noticed that Lyrica collapses against the wall at the end of the dance lol. Caroline killed it she was so good!! She sounded flawless and oh my god she was perfect SHHSJSJSJ

The Countess and the Common man

Caroline’s so funny. So funny. She and John have amazing chemistry as well and they are such a great pair of humor. They honestly have the audience in their palm the entire time. After “I loved you” John Bolton looked at her and just nodded a lot before “you loved me?” And lily looked so sad and exasperated. The dance was great omg they’re both so good?? John Bolton is a better dancer than I am. The kiss was so funny nejsjjsns and after the song and after the applause they kissed again even crazier and it got so many cheers. Poor Lily, though. Caroline played her perfectly heartbroken. Vlad can be kind of a jerk.

THE NIGHTMARE SCENE

IT GETS ME EVERY TIME

THE ILLUSION OF ALEXEI BEING ON A SWING THATS SO FUCKING COOL AND THE DIALOGUE IS HAUNTING AS HELL IS BUT AHHHH

CHRISTY IS AMAZING

DMITRY CAME IN AND COMFORTED ANYA AND I DIED SO CUTE

HE COMPLIMENTED HER AND THAT ADDED TEN YEARS TO MY LIFE

IN

A

CROWD

OF

THOUSANDS.

Died.

I died.

Okay, first of all, the biceps are real people. I HEAD GASPS. Also, Derek’s hair for the entire show was so good?? Derek, drop your skin care routine please. Christy too.

Anyway, back to the song. Their chemistry is RIDICULOUS. I was in tears a lot but they sounded so good!! When Christy had her solo she started off soft and kind of teasing and Dmitry laughed and went “hey!” when she said “not too clean”

When she’s remembering the parade, Christy kind of drifts forward. And when she said “and then… he bowed!” Derek sat there on the bed for a moment and then was like WAIT “uhhhh I didn’t tell you that??” And she looked at him and they ran towards each other and both of them looked down at their intertwined hands and each other like they couldn’t believe the other was real ahhshshj

DMITRY WHY DIDNT YOU KISS HER

IT WAS SO CLOSE AND I HEARD LITERAL SIGHS OF DISAPPOINTMENT

Anya looked like she was trying not to cry as he bowed. ME TOO, ANYA. Me too.

Meant to Be scene-

ALL THE COSTUMES PERSONALLY TARGETED ME

DEREK LOOKED SO GOOD IN THE SUIT

Dmitry comes out and Vlad gives him this look like, “hey, you look good!” and then motions to Dmitry’s shoe. Dmitry looks down, sees untied shoelace, bends down to tie it.

ANYA CAME OUT. THE BLUE DRESS IS SO GODDAMN GORGEOUS. SO SPARKLY. THERE WERE GASPS AS SHE WALKED OUT. THE CAPE, THE HEADPIECE, THE DRESS. EVERYTHING SPARKLED.

And Dmitry stops cold, slowly looks up at her in awe. Me too, Dima. Me too.

And then he looks at her face, jumps up, and offers her his arm. Shjsjsjshjsjsj they’re SO CUTE.

MEANT TO BE WAS SURPRISINGLY EMOTIONAL JOHN BOLTON YOU TALENTED MAN. HE SOUNDED SO BROKEN. I CRIED.

QUARTET AT THE BALLET

SHJSJSJSJS

LYRICA IS AMAZING AND SO GRACEFUL AND SO ARE KYLE AND JAMES AS WELL AS MOLLY SHINA AND SISSY WHO ARE THE DANCERS AT THE OPERA. THE JUMPS AND SPINS. I WAS IN AWE.

WHEN ANYA SINGS, EVERYONE ELSE CONTINUES TO WATCH THE DANCERS, SAME FOR ALL THE OTHER SOLOS. THE DOWAGER USES BINOCULARS TO LOOK AT ANYA

THE HARMONIES. MAX AND DEREK KILLED ME. I TRANSCENDED AND DIED. I DID NOT KNOW WHERE TO LOOK SO I TRIED TO LOOK AT THEM ALL AND DIED.

AND THEN THEY ALL COMBINED AND THAT WAS THE SONG THAT GOT THE MOST APPLAUSE AND I JUST DIED IT WAS SO AMAZING I CRIED I CRIED

EVERYTHING TO WIN!!!

Derek SLAYED ME. DMITRY WAS SO CUTE AND NERVOUS AND LIKE COULDNT KEEP STILL

HE RAN OVER TO VLAD AND VLAD WAS DOING ALL THE NERVOUS MOTIONS LIKE PEOPLE DO WHEN THEYRE ANXIOUS WITH HIS HANDS LIKE SQUEEZING THEM AND THEN BENT OVER AND THEN HE WAS LIKE “IM OUT OF HERE PEACE OUT” (no that’s not what he really said, in reality his line was something like “I can’t handle these nerves. tell lily I needed a stiff glass of vodka”)

AND THEN DMITRY RUNS BACK OVER AND LISTENS WHEN HE SAYS “NOTHING BUT SILENCE”

HE KNOCKS ON THE CHAIR WHEN HE SAYS BETTER KNOCK ON WOOD

AND THEN HE SLOWS DOWN AND LOOKS SO DESPERATE AND HEARTBROKEN WHEN HE REALIZES HE CARES FOR ANYA

BY THE WAY, DEREK MAKES TONS OF HAND MOTIONS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW AND I LOVED THEM SO MUCH

HE ALSO KEEPS HIS EYES HIGHER IN THE AUDIENCE WHEN HE LOOKS OUT WHILE THE OTHER ACTORS KIND OF MOVE THEIR EYES FROM HIGHER TO DIFFERENT AREAS

ANYA COMES OUT SO COLD AND ANGRY AND BROKEN AND WHILE SHE WAS TALKING TO HIM ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, SHE FIDGETED WITH HER DRESS LIKE SHE WAS SUPER ANGRY. SHE SHOVES DMITRY AND AFTER HER LINES SHE JUST FUCKING BOOKED IT OFFSTAGE

DMITRY AND THE DOWAGER HOLY SHIT

HOLY SHIT

I WAS DYING THE ENTIRE SCENE

okay so the Dowager comes out and Dmitry does a quick bow on “your royal majesty!”

And then the Dowager is like “no.”

Dmitry’s volume gets louder as he gets more desperate until he’s yelling “SHE ONLY WANTS WHAT’S RIGHTFULLY HERS! YOUR RECOGNITION… AND YOUR LOVING EMBRACE!”

HE STEPPED ON HER CAPE AND THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE WENT “OOOOOOH” and then it went silent and there was so much tension.

And then she slapped him and then audience reacted again. SO much tension.

And after Dmitry roasted her, the Dowager just sat there in disbelief before she left.

Anya is a savage, she roasted the hell out of Vlad and Dima. She threw the doll on the floor and Vlad reacted and then chased her while Dmitry picked it up. Her dress for this scene is gorgeous, like all the others. While she’s ranting to Dmitry and Vlad about using her, Lily and the Dowager sneak in. Lily taps Vlad on the shoulder and the Dowager walks in. Dmitry bows and she hands him her cane.

Anya and the dowager was awkward in a nice sort of way. Idk how else to describe it. The music box part made me cry. MARY BETH PEIL. WHERE IS YOUR TONY

WHEN THE GIRLS HUGGED, DMITRY WALKED IN TO SEE IT GOODBYE THE TEARS ARE NOW IN CONTROL

THE PRESS CONFERENCE THE SEXISM IS REAL THE GIRLS WERE PUSHED TO THE BACK WHICH IS WHY YOU HEAR “EXCUSE ME OVER HERE”

WES WHO PLAYED A JOURNALIST BRIBED VLAD OH MY GOD

MOLLY AND I THINK SISSY PICKED UP THE PROP PHONES

TO CALL AND REPORT WHAT HAPPENED

(The post is too long I will continue this)

as promised, here’s my rundown of Anastasia, which I saw that night after Waitress!!

Anastasia

(cast: Christy Altomare as Anya, Zach Adkins as Dmitry, John Bolton as Vlad, Max von Essen as Gleb, Vicki Lewis as Countess Lily, Mary Beth Peil as the Dowager Empress; seats: 5th row left orchestra, obstructed view)

firsts things first: CHRISTY ALTOMARE IS A NATIONAL TREASURE AND I LOVE HER WITH ALL MY HEART PROTECT HER AT ALL COSTS *ahem* I’ve been following Christy’s journey at Anastasia since it opened and she a) seems like the absolute nicest person on the planet and b) is working wonders with this role, she was born for it wowowow. also her daily live instragrams during the one section of the show she’s not on stage are so fun and one time she read my comment on one out loud and i may have cried? I was v sad when we had to catch a train rather than stage door to meet her. ANYWHO it was SO SURREAL to be up close to her performing. it is a privilege to watch her on stage, she has so much passion and grace and skill. she has an incredibly expressive face, which was so evident especially when she sang. like for example In My Dreams?? translates as a ballad on the album but in the show? she’s just having a conversation with Dmitry and Vlad and she slides so effortlessly between talking to them and getting lost in her past while HITTING those damn notes! and god HOMEGIRL CAN SING i mean like obviously if you’ve heard the album you know this, but live Christy just puts in so much raw emotion (my fave examples: all of In My Dreams, shouting YES in Journey to the Past, her longing and trepidation at the ballet, “in that cellar in ekaterinburg ALL OVER AGAIN”)

Another fun thing about Christy Altomare? she’s just….the smallest? like she’s so small? the internet says she’s 5’4” and i honestly don’t believe that cause I’m 5’4” and she’s TINY. maybe its the fact that Zach Adkins is so large?? Idk but it made Anya that much more spunky like “yeah i’m the size of a child but I will FUCK YOU UP i lived on the STREET” AND SHE HAS TO STAND ON A SUITCASE TO KISS DMITRY LIKE FUCK ME UP THATS SO CUTE AND IM NOT OVER IT

speeeeeaking of Zach Adkins (insert heart eyes here). Ok disclaimer: I have never seen Derek Klena play Dmitry live. I love Derek Klena. but honestly? I probably would have liked Zach’s better (oops). he’s said it in interviews (and I totally agree) that his Dmitry is softer than Derek’s. the FIRST thing I noticed about him was that he smirked his way onto the stage. like he’s always smiling. except when he’s staring lovingly into Anya’s eyes, or realizing he can’t have her or confronting the Dowager Empress. but yeah he’s chosen to make Dmitry a little less broody and I’m here for that. he was boyish and charming and HANDSOME and had great chemistry with Christy and my god the amount of times he spun her off the ground!! the! absolute! cutest! i want him to spin ME around that effortlessly! Zach also had a really lovely voice and nailed every song. Whereas Derek sounds a little too? perfect sometimes, Zach’s voice had great character to it and was downright dreamy. So in conclusion Derek is great, but please please don’t count out Zach cause he’s incredible

John Bolton and Vicki Lewis were hilarious and played off of each other so well, Mary Beth Peil was regal and heartbreaking (i mean I couldn’t even see her when she sang Close the Door and i had tears in my eyes). Max von Essen played a nuanced and complex Gleb. his interactions with Anya were so tense and creepy and multifaceted. He played this really well, even making me laugh with “I have a sense of humor……….hah?”

The sets! the spinning train in We’ll Go From There added so much more to the song and the cherry blossoms made Journey to the Past even more stunning! THE COSTUMES HOLY FUCK GOD THEY WERE SO GOOD FUCK my faves were: Tsarina’s white dress, all the 1920s costumes, literally everything Anya wore, especially the blue and red dresses GODDAMN

Other little great things: Nicole Scimeca, Anya fighting off the drunk guys with the stick, anytime anyone said comrade, Stay I Pray You (truly one of the most hauntingly beautiful things I’ve ever had the privilege to see live, I mean i could see tears on the actors faces), Lyrica’s ballet, being close enough to hear individual ensemble voices, the dancers projected on the audience, Dmitry stomping on the Dowager’s train, Dmitry and Anya giggling to each other in Paris Holds the Key…

AND SO SO MUCH MORE do yourself a favor and SEE THIS SHOW
