Disney Animators Study Their Reflections in Mirrors to Draw Classic Characters’ Facial Expressions

For decades, professional animators have relied on mirrors and their own facial expressions to be able to produce the dynamic, expressive characters that audiences know and love. Using themselves as models, the artists leer, grin, and grimace at their own reflections so that they can recreate the right nuances of each look on paper.

In this charming set of photos, legendary animators from the 1940s to the 1960s can be seen making hilarious faces at themselves as they sketch beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, and Fred Flintstone. Working in famed studios like Walt Disney Production, Warner Bros, and Hanna-Barbera Productions, these artists brought to life many of the creations that defined the golden age of American animation, from Tom and Jerry to Lady and the Tramp.

Disney’s Hercules was first released on June 27, 1997.

The film was released due to backlash against the previous two Disney releases of ‘Pocahontas (1995)’ and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)’, major criticisms where that they were too “dark” and dealt with “serious issues” that Disney shouldn’t use in their animated films. Hercules was released to lighten things up. (x)

4/100 days of productivity

i was inspired to make my Italian notes purple. Revision with foldable vocab lists really works (tip!!) with English in blue and Italian in black. Trying to balance three languages (Latin, French, Italian) at the same time is difficult but I try and do one a day and some revision of all three in the evenings.

My Moana cosplay. I made this before the movie came out, and I don’t regret it at all. Seeing the movie only made me want to make the cosplay even better, and perhaps a few more in the future. She’s a wonderful, brave spirit who is both motivated and honest. She is a hero we should all look up to. I certainly do.
