disney female characters

"Captain Amelia is one of the most feminist characters of all time" by Matthew S. Robinson

I’ve decided tumblr does not appreciate Captain Amelia from the underrated Disney film “Treasure Planet”

I mean seriously think about how awesome this character is just removing all bias of how you felt about the movie as a whole her being a woman or her being a man, human, cat humanoid, space alien whatever this is a totally awesome character who has one of the most intense and just flat out magnificent character introductions in animated film…

Okay now let’s add on the other layer she is a woman and in fact one of the only women in the entire film. She’s arguably the most tough out of all the active characters, one of the most intelligent who proves to be not only a physical match for most of the crew but also is an intellectual match with Doppler (the assumed smartest character) as she knows just about as much about astrophysics as he does. And she does it like it’s a Tuesday.

She’s clearly a character used to taking crap for being a woman she makes a point to tell Hawkins to call her either Captain or Ma'am which is clearly more a test to gauge his respect level than a pronouncement of her ego. When Hawkins calls her Ma'am she coldly replies “That will do.” So she doesn’t even get bogged down on it, she’s got a ship to run. And when that ship comes under attack she’s already ready to throw down.

So okay she’s a tough and fearless leader with grade A intelligence but that’s just one aspect of what makes her a great female character. Sometimes people (including myself) complain that tough female characters either have to be over sexualized or their sexuality is totally removed. But Amelia manages to never have a “sexy scene” and still never loses charm or sexuality. They never overplay her femininity over her position but make sure that she represents a woman who can lead men but still be very much a lady.

What’s more after she and Doppler form a relationship they both manage to make their feelings known without it enveloping her character and removing what made her unique. Then after all of that she still manages to; get married, have kids and keep her job (possibly even be promoted to Admiral by that point)

In closing Captain Amelia is 100% Certified Bad Ass

NOT a Disney Girl: strong female characters who are not Disney’s

Here are just a few strong, badass, and generally awesome female animated characters who are NOT from the House of Mouse:

Anastasia/Anya from Anastasia

She’s street-wise, sassy, and smart, as well as beautiful in both hand-me-downs and dresses. She broke the idea that “princesses can’t be tough” before Merida even got a shot. What more could you ask for?

Kayley from Quest for Camelot

She rides a horse, uses a sword, and goes on a quest to save Camelot. She becomes the first lady-knight, and she was sporting the tunic/leggings combo before it was a thing.

Tzipporah from The Prince of Egypt

This movie is full of strong women, but Tzipporah was always my favorite. She’s sexy, strong, clever, and doesn’t put up with anybody’s sh*t. Don’t believe me? Go watch it again.

Chel from The Road to El Dorado.

She uses all her assets to get what she wants. Shady, sexy, and smart–she can hold her own in a scam. Far from the goody-good-doing princesses of Disney.

Akima from Titan A.E.

Steampunk, kick-ass, beautiful pilot who stole my heart when the “Steampunk” genre was still in its infancy. Also, she’s Asian and she has purple hair. I wanted that hair, guys… I wanted it so bad.

I’m glad Disney is choosing to portray more empowered female characters–but they’re not pioneering this movement. Notice that these movies are mostly from the 90′s and 00′s.

The Signs As Girlfriends

*CHECK YOUR MOON AND VENUS SIGNS TOO*

Aries: She’ll make fun of your quirks but secretly fucking adores them, she’ll stick by you through thick and thin but will give you a kick up the ass if you need it. If you’re not giving her enough attention/affection, trust me she will let you know. Like Aries boyfriends can get jealous easily but is less confrontational about it (you’ll know by her face and eyes)

Taurus: She’ll picture you’s two together in the future if you guys are committed. She takes commitment really seriously so if you get it you lucky bruh. She likes sensual things like food and massages but it could literally be as simple as a bag of chips and a back rub. If you promiseher your love you better mean it because she can get hella jealous and possessive.

Gemini: Much like Gemini boyfriends, the girlfriends can be super extroverted in their relationship, she will talk the ears off anyone who asks about you. She’ll be witty and sarcastic with you but in a charming manner and she’ll do things to get a reaction (for example, run off your phone). When it comes to emotions she wont like getting too deep and will probably try and talk her way out of the subject.

Cancer: She thinks A LOT and might worry a lot about the relationship cause she doesn’t want to fuck up so you might need to reassure her a good bit. She can get emotionally jealous and possessive sometimes but only cause her mind can trip her up a bit. She has such a lovely smile that’s simply contagious and she can make you feel so fucking safe and cared for, like she will always be there when you need to talk no matter what time it is. Great sense of humour (blushes at dirty jokes but secretly she fucking creates them lmao)

Leo: She’s the type that’ll make you look at life with excitement. Like a child
she finds beauty and happiness in the simplest of things. She’s the type that will dance with you in the back garden at 2am with sparklers. Her laughter is infectious and she loooooooves to tease omg but she knows when you need affection and she’ll give it to you without hesitation. She’ll love to show you off as well like omg ‘’This is my partner and they’re the best person ever like look at this lil shit”

Virgo: SARCASTIC. AS. FUCK. Intellect is a big thing with this sign, if you’re boring her good luck getting some. She loves to be witty and smart assed around you. She’s not very touchy feely but will melt into hugs. She won’t always express her feelings, if you compliment her she’ll probably brush it off nonchalantly or make a witty comment but trust me she appreciates it and you probably just made her tummy do the spinny thing. If you ever get the chance to get into an emotional conversation with her cherish it cause they’re not very common.

Libra: She’ll watch rom coms and give out to you because you don’t do those things for her and then you’ll do them and she’ll be like “Ew cringeeee” but she’ll appreciate it a lot. She’s witty but doesn’t really use it unless she’s pissed off. She’s really caring and also really fair, you have to meet her halfway or she’s not gonna bother with you lol. She’d walk through hell to make you happy if she really cares about you but if you cross her she’ll walk back through hell to make sure karma kicks you in the face

Scorpio: In public she’s soo chill (think Rosa from Brooklyn nine-nine). She’s neither overly affectionate or completely affection-less, she’ll hold your hand and stuff. When it’s just you’s two, she can be really giggly and soooooo dirty minded whether you know about it or not omg. She’ll listen to your problems and try to help you through it. Look after her feelings tho, even though she might not show them, she feels deeply. Oh and if you ever want to slash someones tires she’s your girl.

Sagittarius: She’s the type to romanticise travelling, and she does it so well. Whether she wants to travel the world with you or just 5 miles, she loves to make plans. As a fire sign, she’ll be really fiery when she flirts, she could probably bring you to your knees tbh. She takes NO shit whatsoever so don’t even try to play her. She likes when you two play as a team rather than. She can get bored easily and needs to be occupied.

Capricorn: She’ll probably be hella quiet until you two get close enough for her to trust you with her personality. Not into public displays of affection and likes to keep relationships low key cause they know that people can be assholes. She’s like a living meme generator tbh and has suuuccch a dirty mind omg. Like Cap boyfriends, they keep so much heartbreaking stuff to themselves and rarely ever open up so if they open up to you feel blessed son.

Aquarius: Think of every eccentric disney female character. That is an Aqua girlfriend to a certain extent (depending on their moon). She will ferociously twerk to untwerkable songs and it’ll work??? like idk how it just does. She always tries to make the best of a bad situation and she’ll do the same with your problems. She’ll try to help you grow and develop mentally. She’ll be the one to text you at 3 am like “Babe do you think aliens are real?”. She’ll make really good jokes too (some can be offensive but not intentionally)

Pisces: She can be so aloof and sometimes she won’t actually hear what you’re saying because she’s too busy admiring you, she will love you whole heartedly. She’s so emotionally intelligent and can always tell when there’s something wrong with you SO DONT DENY IT because you will frustrate her and she can get nasty when frustrated. She’ll sit with you and talk about dreams and aspirations and she’ll be the one to encourage you to do whatever makes you happy. Don’t try to take advantage of her because she will know and you will pay.

Let Me Introduce You To Someone Named Kida.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Disney’s most underrated princess: Kidagakash Nedakh, Princess and later, Queen Of Atlantis. I saw the film Atlantis: The Lost Empire when i was very young and i find it to be criminally underrated. And Kida is a Top 5 Disney Lady [She’s also the oldest at 8,500-8,800.] easily.

Kida is a warrior, a linguist, a scavenger, a Queen in her own right and has a literal mental connection with the Heart Of Atlantis: She’s kind, brave, eager, vigilant, curious and desires to help her people rediscover Atlantis’s lost history which is a very interesting goal for a princess. She is shown to have moments of aggression but this is when somebody with ill intent tries to grab her and she attacks them. it makes sense in the particular situation not to mention several thousand years ago she would have done this on sight to anyone she didn’t know given back then her empire was at war with other countries.

Princess-no Queen Kida is an interesting character and both her and her film need much more recognition Disney!

Next Time: A look at a lovely smart blonde who was the star of her very own musical and feature-length film.

Next Gen: 'Aladdin' Star Naomi Scott Says Jasmine is "a Multidimensional Woman"
The actress tells THR about the character's notable changes and the key addition of a friend played by Nasim Pedrad.

“There are so many amazing new things about the character in this adaptation — I could literally go on for an hour!” Scott excitedly tells The Hollywood Reporter from London, where the film is in production. “Everyone involved in this project weren’t afraid to really just rip things down and start again, especially the Princess Jasmine character, because it’s so important to get that right.”

First, audiences of the May 2019 release can expect to meet a Jasmine who is a well-rounded character. “I love what Disney is doing at the moment with their princesses — going from animation to live-action and making those animated characters real human beings,” says Scott, a British actress and singer whose mother is from northern India. “Being a female character is also about being a real person, and guess what? [She] can be strong and have fun, but also get it wrong and be emotional. She’s a multidimensional woman, and she doesn’t have to just be one thing. So in this movie, you see her go on such a roller coaster, as opposed to her one goal being to fall in love or get married.”

I love that post about Sarah Jacobs being in the musical and coming in before Once and For All, but I also propose, Sarah coming in originally in the paper selling scene before That’s Rich. Maybe have Jack try one of his selling strategies on her? Or even better have Jack push Davey to sell to her. C’mon that is comedy gold.
