Died at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered during a rocket propelled grenade attack on their dismounted patrol in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. Landis was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Dec. 19, 2013. The company established temporary patrol bases and conducted dismounted patrols over the course of three days to build relations with local residents and counter any insurgent presence in the area.
