Right Now, Wrong Then (Hong Sang-soo, 2015)

a game of spot the difference, between what actually happened and the way he/she wished it had gone/the movie they want to make (or see) of it. those differences speaking a world of ego, agency, control and regret. and it’s never clear which half is which.

keeping in this reality here: he keeps making the movie that i want to see, and i’m wondering if i should be more critical of that. other people seem to be. that’s the feeling i get from reading wimp reviews of this. but from that misfit colour-schemed title card with the organ music, to the still shot opening and that odd zoom out - nothing in this world felt more cozy. yes he seems to do one thing but that one thing is great, and is a springboard to the infinite of human disconsolation and selfishness, and whatever narrative tricks he wants to use to draw them out. so i’m here, faithful, forever.

hit on. messing me up,

…blue, down in/at the mouth, down in the dumps, desolate, deserted, abandoned, forsaken, unhappy, sad, miserable, sorrowful, dejected, despondent, disconsolate, wretched, abject, down, downcast, dispirited, downhearted, crestfallen, depressed, melancholy, gloomy, glum, mournful, despairing, doleful, woebegone, forgotten, neglected
hopeless, vain, with no chance of success, useless, futile, pointless, purposeless, unavailing, nugatory, also bootless……. !!

“Matron let me have the key, should you like to come with me and see what we may unearth?” Mary asked.

Emma had looked a little disconsolate all day but with no particular reason Mary could divine. She managed to perch gracefully on a hand-backed chair, taking dictation from a boy from Raleigh, while seeming as if all she wanted to do was sigh.
