“Dodger, come here,” you whispered and the dog padded out of the kitchen, stopping at your feet. You bent and patted his back as his tail wagged excitedly.

Staring back at your reflection in the mirror of the foyer, you smoothed out your dress - the same summer dress you’d wear on your first date with Chris three years ago - and you applied your cranberry lip balm. You weaved a hand through your hair, pushed up your breasts and you picked up the breakfast tray you’d left on the entryway table.

“What do you think? He’s going to like it, right?” You asked Dodger and laughed at how ridiculous you sounded. My God, I’m talking to a dog.

    “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller

    Starring Ben Whishaw

An excellent lesson in production design and directorial concepts. Love the idea of taking it out of the 1600′s and placing it loosely “whenever”. What an interesting comment on moving it from the courthouse to the school room, with the girls all in uniforms. What does this play teach? What does religion?

    Lots to unpack.

And sometime monochrome design can be SO powerful

    SM Question of the day:

Where does the line between Stage Management end and Assistant Director begin?

Last week my director said, “So I don’t have an assistant on this show, so can I ask you to stuff I’d usually have them to do?” Obviously, I obliged and this has thus-far included:

    • Historical Research
    • Mapping a scene by scene rehearsal schedule
    • Being asked my opinion on the dynamics of the blocking & character motive
    • Informing the company of changes to the script.

Now perhaps it’s just my experience, but none of these tasks is anything wildly different to what I’d expect the roles of a (Deputy) Stage Manager to do. Which begs the question: where is the distinct difference between the side roles of an SM and the job of an Assist Director? Or is it just a case of whether or not your production has the luxury of the extra hands?

    Discuss! Theorize! Share your experiences!
