the world as we know it has ended and mother nature starts taking back what’s hers. there are no zombies or cannibals or murderous bandits. the most valued members of the community are those who know how to garden and farm, sew and weave, treat wounds, work wood or build with bricks, cook from scratch.
people bond together to begin rebuilding instead of killing each other. everyone teaches each other whatever they do know and works together to figure out the stuff none of them know. books become incredibly valued resources because they’re often the only way to learn critical information. if someone is elderly, disabled, or otherwise unable to work at the same level as most of the community, they’re taken care of by the others, not told any sort of “survival of the fittest” bs.
as the generations ware on, communities begin expanding into small cities. some of the settlements even find ways to repurpose solar or wind power on a small scale and have electricity in some of their buildings. storytellers wander the countryside telling tales of the old world in return for some hot stew or a place to rest for the night, and the mythos of the new world start to incorporate elements of the past. the only thing that remains constant is that humans survive, and they do it by working together.
Revered founders of the universe is all very well (ok, *I* think it’s creepy and harbor a Vimesian distrust of the whole thing, but tastes differ) but the concept of HS victors as rumors and the very beginnings of myths, mostly passed around by people on the edges of things or desperate enough to believe interests me more.
Astronauts don’t report this, but sometimes on space walks you see a woman out there without any suit at all. Sometimes she waves. At least one swears when her tether snapped, the woman caught her and brought her back.
Multiple people, after near death experiences, report seeing a vaguely similar figure standing over them, offering to hold their hand.
Children tell each other stories they heard from a friend’s friend or sibling or cousin, about how if you’re lost or afraid or in trouble or your parents don’t treat you right, you can call for help, and someone will come take care of you and protect you for as long as you need it.
Traditions spring up without anyone really knowing why, like whispering your wishes to the wind because it seems like a good listener, or using blue as a good luck color for the sick.
Of course, on the less poetic side of things, blurry grayscale photos show up on the internet with ‘CONFIRMED????’ plastered over them. Bloggers write ‘the god of hope is real and if you paint yourself blue and yell tally ho in a denny’s parking lot at 2 am he’ll wrestle you’.
I feel like it’s kind of
lost on many people that „Don’t use modern labels on historical people“ and
„Queer people didn’t exist in history“ are two completely different things.
“Don’t use modern labels” simply means that it’s important to highlight queer people
in history, their concepts of their own sexualities and the historical and
social context. I have said this before and I still believe it: I think you
mean well by calling historical people gay, lesbian or bi but I also think
you’re actually harming your cause by forcing this modern concept on historical
people and taking away the chance to learn about and understand their own
concepts and how they themselves thought of their sexualities. To say it
bluntly: Forcing a modern concept of sexuality on historical people or even
denying there were different concepts of sexuality in different historical
epochs in the first place is erasing a big part of LGBTQ history.
People have always tried to
make sense of sexuality and attraction just like we do today and it’s honestly
so important to inform yourselves on how people thought of sexuality and same
gender attraction in the 17th or 18th or 19th
century and not just call them gay or bi and call it a day. That’s were the
really important queer history is: In self-conceptions and social contexts and
progress and the development and advancing of concepts of sexuality until this very
Also I’m sure that should
someone say to you: “They didn’t have a concept of homosexuality so there were
no queer people” you have a better chance of educating them by saying “They
might not have known the modern concept, but same gender attraction has always
existed, there were always concepts of sexuality and same gender attraction,
even though they differed from ours” than insisting “But XY was clearly gay!”
Tl;dr: “There were different concepts of sexuality in history and it’s important to learn about them to truly understand queer history instead of just forcing our modern one on historical people.” =/= “Queer people didn’t exist in history.”
This isn’t about erasing queer people from history. It’s about the opposite: Highlighting queer historical people, their self-conceptions, their lives, their social context and their impact on queer history.
PS: Before this argument
comes up again: Of course calling historical people “straight” is just the
same. We shouldn’t do that either since “heterosexuality” is also a concept of
sexuality that plain and simple did not exist until the late 19th century.
This argument needs to go already.
Prototype V Production (What a difference 18 years makes). Lamborghini Countach LP500 prototype, 1971 and Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, 1989. Hayden’s character is obviously the one that’s really going through the change, and mine is more just reactive to that. Padmé has a pretty centered self, it’s not that she goes through this big change internally, but that external things are changing around her, and she has to sort of make decisions to cope with that. If she had some different concept of government, or what’s right, or morality she might have been able to stay with him, you know, her loyalties to him above everything. But Padmé’s a politician, she’s been a leader of many people. This is sort of combining being a woman with being a politician. Which is a interesting combination we don’t see much of.
