I was mentally composing another snarky post criticizing how Dave knows Gamzee is dangerous, knows he’s no longer Karkat’s moirail, and knows Terezi is neither God Tier nor in good shape, but when he sees her challenging the super deadly murderclown he just flies off like ok sounds good have fun. But as I was organizing that post, I started thinking about the fact that lots of people know better, or ought to, and they don’t do much of anything.
I’m not sure how much I can criticize Karkat and Kanaya since I’m not sure whether they can reach the two - trolls’ capacity for physical feats varies - but currently they’re standing around with weapons out yelling at him, which isn’t super helpful but is at least better than most of the others.
Jane was just attacked by Gamzee herself, and she observes Terezi attacking him for a while with a vague interest before moving on. She seems to regard it almost as entertainment.
JANE: Observing this tomfoolery for several minutes has been time well spent. I have no regrets whatsoever. She doesn’t do anything else.
Jake is right there
and despite his ideals of action heroism and chivalry, he doesn’t do a thing to stop Terezi’s blood from being smeared all over the concrete. He does cover his eyes though, because I guess it’s unpleasant to watch or something. When he does take action, it’s merely saying
JAKE: Pardon me… JAKE: Sir jester? JAKE: I dont know what this masked bandit has done to deserve such a throttling… JAKE: Something sufficiently felonious i presume? JAKE: But it is hard to imagine she has not been punished enough and then some. JAKE: Perhaps you could um… JAKE: If its not much bother… JAKE: See to… JAKE: Unhanding the lady? JAKE: Maybe?
He addresses Gamzee honorably and assumes Terezi is the one at fault. Plus, he (weakly) asks him to unhand her when he’s currently holding her dangling over lava. Nice one, Jake.
Rose dithers for quite some time, wondering if it is cultural differences, like that would make it ok. Finally, she says
ROSE: I don’t care if it IS some sort of grisly courtship ritual. ROSE: THIS HAS TO STOP!
but the fact that her spell misses makes me think she wasn’t completely committed to her course of action.
Basically, these characters are watching a male beat a female nearly (?) to death and most of them don’t lift a finger. With Dave’s casual assumption that she can handle herself, Rose’s concern as to whether this is something she should interfere in, Jake deciding that Terezi must deserve it somehow… I’m wondering if this is supposed to be a statement. Whether or not it’s meant that way, I’m reading it that way.
