An American soldier standing at the podium in the interior hall of Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) in Leipzig after the city fell on April 18, 1945.

A large monument erected in memory of the victory over Napoleon in 1813, was one of the last bastions to capitulate to the Allied Armies.

One hundred and fifty German SS soldiers with ammunition and foodstuffs stored in the structure to last three months dug themselves in, but were blasted with artillery and defeated.
