Lmao idk if you can relate but do you ever start a story with doing no prior planning whatsoever and are super excited about it and you write like the first chapter and then stop?? I ALWAYS do that bc I don't know how to plan a novel at all.. got any tips?
OK, so this fits in with the idea of the planner vs. pantser that gets talked about a lot in NaNoWriMo. Do you jump write in, (yes, I did that on purpose) or do you sit down and spend the next 200 hours plotting out your novel? There is not right answer to this question. It is a matter of what works best for you.
However, you need to have some kind of an idea about your story before you jump in. I like to start with at least one solid character. Pick a name, a gender role that they like, figure out some stuff about them. Sit down and have a chat with them. Once you have a solid character, figure out what they want to accomplish. It may not have anything to do with the story that you tell. (I’m working on a story with a friend, and her character want to become a champion archer some day because she saw a woman win a competition.)
Flesh out your characters a bit more, and you may find that your story comes together a bit better even if you are pantsing it.
