Magneton evolves into Magnezone through the exposure of a “special magnetic field”, which is not possible to recreate in a laboratory environment. Magnetic Field strength is measured in a unit called a Tesla, named after the famous Serbian-American scientist.
Let’s start by giving you an idea about the strength of a magnetic field:
The magnetic fieldof the Earth ranges from 0.000031 to 0.000065 Teslas depending on your latitude.
A typical refrigerator magnet has a field of about 0.005 Teslas
A neodymium magnet has a field of about 1.25 Teslas
A Medical MRI machine works at about 3 Teslas (Research MRI machines go up to 9.4 T)
The largest ever lab-generated field was 45 Teslas
The largest ever lab-generated pulse field was 730 Teslas, which destroyed the equipment used.
A neutron star has a field of more than 1,000,000 Teslas
As you can see, the Magnetic Fields generated in a laboratory setting are much larger than anything that occurs naturally in our solar system. If Magneton’s evolution was based on field strength alone, there’s no reason why scientists could not recreate it in a laboratory setting.
So there must be something we’re missing. Let’s take a closer look at the locations we know Magnezone will evolve:
Mt. Coronet – The highest mountain in Sinnoh and the location of the Spear Pillar, home of Arceus.
Chargestone Cave – A cave in Western Unova that is full of glowing, floating stones.
Kalos Route 13 – A barren wasteland that is the site of the manmade Kalos power plant.
New Mauville – Another man-made powerplant located under Mauville City in Hoenn.
At first, these locations seem to have nothing in common. Two of them are power plants, one is a mountain, the pokémon found in the areas aren’t even the same. Three out of the four you can find thunderstones, which might say something, but nothing that really solves our problem. And yet, we know all of them have some sort of strong magnetic field.
For both power plants, the source is relatively obvious. Any moving charge creates a magnetic field, whether its an electron around a nucleus, or a current through a wire. These power plants must manufacture and distribute massive amounts of electricity, which generate a massive magnetic field appropriately. Somewhere around 5 million amps of electric current from my estimations.
Chargestone Cave appears to be a deposit of diamagnetic superconductors. Basically, this allows the stones to easily float as discussed in Magnemite’s entry. As for Mt. Coronet, it’s probably either a strong magnetic pole, contains lots of ferromagnetic ores, or perhaps there’s something about Arceus that generates a big magnetic field. In any case, all four locations have a Magnetic field in the order of around 1 Tesla. About 10 Teslas will kill a person, and since the areas are frequented by trainers, it’s definitely closer to 1.
And that’s totally reproducible in a lab setting. But because Magnezone’s evolution its not, there has to be something else unique about these sites that triggers Magneton’s evolution. I’m willing to bet the answer lies in how Magneton’s magnets interact with the environment around it; not the other way around.
Every material has a quantity called magnetic moment, which determines the magnetic force it will feel. During the experiment the unnamed scientists performed, they likely isolated and insulated their experiment from any other factors. So while the strong magnetic field could interact with Magneton, Magneton’s own magnets did not act on the thing generating the magnetic field.
But what does this change? Essentially, Magneton’s own magnetic field interacting with its environment around it (the thing that’s generating the field) would take the already large magnetic field and make it into a changing magnetic field. Changing magnetic fields have lots of interesting effects that stationary fields do not. If a field is changing fast enough, it can even have the same effect as bombarding you with radiation. And that’s what would give Magneton the energy it needs to evolve.
Magnezone gets the energy it needs to evolve from a strong, changing magnetic field. It is not re-creatable in a lab setting because Magneton’s own field is not allowed to interact with the equipment generating the external one; which would likely harm the equipment anyways.
Because of this, you should definitely stay away from Magnezone while its evolving in these areas, and keep it in the pokeball unless absolutely necessary. As I said, a changing magnetic field is comparable to sticking yourself in a microwave.

Electrolytic carbon being diamagnetic ( Remember that a diamagnetic material is one which would rather ‘die’ than be attracted to a magnetic field ) opposes the magnetic field set up by the magnet array and levitates !
Superconductors when cooled below a critical temperature in principle are just ideal diamagnets in that they completely expel the magnetic field due to the meissner effect.
However, always keep in mind that the fundamental origins of diamagnetism in superconductors and normal materials are extremely different and must not be confused.

I was reading your Alola Raichu post, and I thought of something. You mention that A-Raichu might eat more diamagnetic materials, which is how it can float. Well, original Raichu evolved in Kanto, which doesn't have a magnetic evolution area, but Alola does - the Vast Poni Canyon. Perhaps Alola's ground is in some way more magnetic in general, making A-Raichu's food sources contain more diamagnetic substances?
Interesting…I wonder if this means that Alola is closer to the planet’s magnetic pole than Kanto is?
At first this might seem weird, because we have every reason to believe that Alola is near the equator like Hawaii in our world, and planets’ magnetic fields usually line up with their rotation axis. But there are some weird ones out there! Uranus, for example, has a magnetic field that’s nearly 60 degrees off of its rotational axis:
You can see that on Earth, the poles (mostly) line up. But on Uranus, the rotational axis (blue line) is almost perpendicular to the magnetic axis (yellow line). We think this has to do with how magnetic fields are formed in planets. Usually, they are generated in a metallic core (Earth’s core is molten iron and nickel). On Uranus, however, the magnetic field isn’t generated in the core, but instead in a shell that surrounds the core. This causes its weird shape!
So if Alola has stronger magnetic fields than the rest of the planet, it may very well be located closer to one of Alola’s magnetic poles!
Alolan Raichu is a cute little surfer, standing and even sleeping on its tail as it hovers above the ground.
Raichu isn’t the only electric-type pokémon who can levitate like this: the Magnemite line also floats by generating a magnetic field. If you’ve ever played with magnets, you probably know that if you line them up the wrong way the magnets will repel each other. This is basically what Raichu must do. The force of gravity is pulling it down, but some magnetic force is pushing Raichu upwards enough to counter-act gravity.
It may not seem like it, but everything is a magnet. Matter is made of atoms, which have electrons whizzing around them. Since electrons have charge, they can be influenced by magnetic fields. Everything that has electrons is a magnet: which means that just about everything is a magnet.
Of course, there are different kinds of magnets. Everything responds to magnetic fields, but different substances respond to magnetic fields in different ways. Stereotypical “magnets” are actually ferromagnets, materials which not only respond to but can hold their own magnetic field. A lot of metals, like iron and nickel, are ferromagnetic. Paramagnets are attracted to magnetic fields, and diamagnets are repelled by magnetic fields. Water is diamagnetic, and since most living creatures contain a lot of water, most living things are also diamagnetic and therefore repelled by magnetic fields. If you need proof, you can look at this frog, which floats in a magnetic field:
Of course, Raichu is a mouse and not a frog, but the idea still stands. NASA often floats mice in magnetic fields to study the effects of zero-gravity without having to send the mice into space.
How does Raichu create the magnetic field to float on? Well, it’s actually fairly easy to do. Any moving charge – that is, any electric current – creates a magnetic field. And as we know from Kanto Raichu’s pokédex entries, “this Pokémon exudes a weak electrical charge from all over its body.” Raichu is constantly emitting an electric charge, which means Raichu is constantly generating an magnetic field. Alolan Raichu probably emits more electricity than Kanto Raichu, and most of it concentrated out of its tail, rather than uniformly over its whole body.
The pokédex says “According to researchers, its diet is one of the causes of this change.” Raichu’s diet could easily effect how Raichu can float. First of all, Alolan Raichu weighs 9.0 kg less than Kanto Raichu. Obviously, less weight is easier to levitate: less force is needed to counteract gravity. Additionally, what we eat becomes part of us: nutrients and the like are integrated into our bodies. If Alolan Raichu ate a lot of diamagnetic substances, and drank lots of water, this would make Alolan Raichu more diamagnetic than Kanto Raichu. That means it repels magnetic fields more, which also makes it easier to float. Over time these changes led to the evolution of new Raichu subspecies.

The electro-magnet below the desk was made from a half a link of an anchor chain (which Faraday obtained from the whalers ‘Enderby’ operating out of Greenwich) wound with insulated wire.
On 4 November 1845, Faraday discovered that a piece of heavy glass when hung between the poles of an electro-magnet aligned itself equatorially between the poles when the current was on. This he noted would probably allow him to extend dimagnetic properties into opaque bodies.
This is his discovery of the diamagnetic condition in a transparent ponderable body.

The speculative rabbit hole goes deep with this rant, and I’m not 100% sold on any of them. There are certain theories I will argue into the ground, but these are not them.
