When Patrick Mackay was still a child, he was a victim of verbal and physical abuse by his father, Harold Mackay. His Mother Marion was a frequent victim of abuse too. Whenever Harold came home from work he immediately got drunk and beat up Marion. Patrick at the beginning watched his father abusing her, but in later years his father would also turn on him. At the age of ten, Harold died on his way to work from a heart attack due to a weak heart and alcoholism. His final words to Patrick were ironically “remember to be good” before he went to work. However, even though his father gave him and the family nightmares for years, Patrick didn’t cope well with the death of his father. He refused to go to the funeral of his father and kept a photo of him on his person and began to tell everyone that Harold was still alive.
