BREAKING: We have been told by the Mayor’s Office rep that we are not allowed to enter with residents into payment center to advocate for payment plans. We were threatened with arrest. #DetroitWater

This morning people from the Detroit Water Brigade were trying to help out residents to make sure they get fair treatment from DWSD by escorting them inside to help negotiate payments. Instead they have been denied access to the building, threatened with arrest and met with riot cops. Having DWSD turned over to the mayor’s office isn’t changing the tone of this issue.

Update - DWB just reported via facebook that the city is allowing advocates to come in with residents to help them negotiate their water bills.

“If Detroit can be used as a prototype, why can’t it happen in LA, Chicago, or New York? On top of the bankruptcy, on top of the foreclosures, on top of the mayoral issues and emergency manager, on top of all of it – now you want to take our life source?”

Detroit + Water = Disaster

Did you know that there are currently 300K residents in Detroit who could not afford to pay their water bills so the Detroit Water Department shut their water off weeks ago?

I get not being able to pay bills and that sometimes that means you have things shut off - - Cable, internet, lights, water, it’s all been shut off on me at one point or another.

But we live in the United States - - Further, we live in the only state surrounded by more fresh water than we know what to do with and in this state, we are allowing a company to deny people a basic need because they can’t afford it.

Our country is currently shipping water overseas. We’re helping people build clean wells and helping them gain access to clean drinking water because we say that we subscribe to the idea that clean water is a basic human need and right. Unless you’re in Detroit.

Detroit Water Department has, for many years, been charging incredibly high prices for water in some of the poorest areas in our state. Water should not be a business, it should not be a monopoly. We should not hold water over the heads of people who cannot afford to pay insanely high prices for it, as if to shame them further for having financial troubles.

I understand what it’s like to have trouble paying bills and anyone with city water knows that the water rates everywhere are steep - - Why isn’t there more outrage at the City of Detroit? Why aren’t more people pissed off at the Detroit Water Department? Is it because it’s poor people in Detroit? They don’t count? They’re less than you? Less than me?

We’re equal. We all deserve clean, safe, affordable water. If we can’t provide that in this country, we have some serious problems

When you walk into a home that hasn’t had running water for months, you can tell almost immediately. The floors under your feet are sticky and noisy; they haven’t seen a mop in ages. Strange smells accumulate in the dry stillness. Window sill plants have withered.

You approach the tap and turn it. Nothing but creeky sounds. The lights are off in the afternoon to save money. She collects rainwater to flush her toilet and drops the garbage next door to the neighbor so she can keep a low profile.

This is the life of the ultra-poor in Detroit. It’s a life of pretending to not exist, to not be occupying a home for fear of losing it. Bunker down and hope the water shutoff truck or DTE Energy don’t show up. Pray at church for better times.

This is the ‪#‎DetroitWater‬ crisis. And it’s coming to light - will we care enough to fix it?

#DetroitWater: People are mobilizing against city government’s dehumanizing water shutoffs.

40% of Detroit’s population is about to have their water shut off -

The Detroit Water and Sewage Department is conducting mass water shut offs in Detroit Michigan which will effect over 120,000 account holders over a 3 month period (June-September 2014) at a rate of 3,000 per week. This accounts for over 40% of customers who are using the Detroit Water system and has been dubbed a violation of Human Rights by various organizations. 70,000 of those accounts are residential accounts which could amount to anywhere from 200,000-300,000 people directly effected.

Without water..

..dehydration becomes an immediate threat to Detroit residents. A lack of clean and drinkable water on a scale of this size can effect not only the person but the entire city almost immediately. The onset of dehydration is 1-2 days, which, if left untreated can result in death in as little as 5-14 days from the onset. Making sure Detroit residents have a supply of clean drinkable water is our top priority.

Sanitation is the second concern. With lack of water for basic things like waste removal, food preparation and cleanliness of food preparation tools, disease can become a threat factor in a matter of weeks, if left unchecked disease can spread in 2 months time.

Without water, the threat to the health and safety of Detroit residents becomes immediate, the resulting negative effects of mass water shut offs begin just 2 days after shut off and can become endemic in just 60 days time. When taking the scope into account (120,000 water accounts or 300,000+ people ) the implications become clear; this is a disaster zone – and immediate relief and preparation is needed.

I had an idea tonight:

If Detroit steals schoolchildren’s tax dollars to build a stadium we should hold classes in the luxury boxes @uncutcg

— Justin Wedes (@justinwedes) August 5, 2014

I am not being facetious. I am dead serious about this one, people.

First, some context. In case you didn’t notice, Detroit has been in a NAFTA-induced downward spiral of “free market” hell for the last several decades. The population of this once-great metropolis has nose-dived from over 2 million to fewer than 700,000 as nearly everybody with money ran for the suburbs. Wealthy suburbanites still control much of the land, some of the water, and all of the professional sports teams. That doesn’t seem to keep them from Detroit-bashing, as exemplified by suburban Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson this past January:

“I made a prediction a long time ago, and it’s come to pass. I said, ‘What we’re gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and the corn.’ ”

So we come to learn that Detroit’s wealthiest man, Little Caesar’s owner Mike Ilitch, has decided to build a new hockey stadium – next to two other brand-new stadiums, one of which is also Ilitch’s. The price tag stands at $650 million, which of course will be paid for by (not Ilitch and his over $1.7 billion in total worth) taxpayer funds redirected from school property taxes.

Yes, you read that correctly. The City of Detroit intends to pay Mike Ilitch to build this stadium from money originally destined for schools. (Technically, the state is supposed to reimburse the City for all school funds expended on the stadium. This, of course, begs the question of why the state didn’t just pay for it in the first place…)

Isn’t it immoral to take money from an already-stretched school system featuring 43 kids in a classroom and 26 proposed school closures this year including a school for pregnant teens?

Doesn’t that foreclose on an entire generation of Detroit youth just to please a billionaire who doesn’t even need the money?

But won’t it create jobs?

Yes. But not for the youth whose schools are being closed: the Detroit City Council approved the massive $1 public land handover to Ilitch without even getting a commitment that 26% of the arena jobs would go to Detroiters.

Wait, why only 26%?

Ugh. Major #facepalm.

So we are left with what you might expect of a city under “emergency financial management” – read “dictatorship” – and a corrupt City Council that is completely complicit in the ransacking and looting of Detroit by the same Old Boy’s Club that’s been driving it into the ground for decades.

Which leads me back to my initial suggestion: if the city is going to keep foreclosing on kids’ futures just to make a buck for some rich suburban dude, I propose we get ready to hold high school math class in the high-end luxury boxes at Ilitch-Land Stadium next year.
