Demanding Diversity – The Models That Are Changing The Industry
We might think the modelling pool is relatively diverse, but there are still some major barriers that we haven’t yet fully broken. The modelling world, despite what you might think, still has a predominantly “white, skinny” paradigm that isn’t reflective of the myriad forms of beauty in the world. These models might be the ones to break that pattern.
Model Diandra Forrest, you might notice, is albino. Here she is walking on the Nina Athanasiou Runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2015.
Diandra has worked with the likes of MAC cosmetics, Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood. As you can see, she’s totally gorgeous. [Diandra Forrest / Instagram]

Chantelle Winnie has a form of Vitiligo - a condition which gradually strips out the pigment from her skin. What started as a source of bullying has now become the very thing that sets her apart from other models. [Getty]

Melanie Gaydos has been called many horrifying, hurtful things, including “the ugly model.” She has Ectodermal Dysplasia which affects her pores, hair, teeth and nails and has occasioned many surgeries. Modelling, she says, has become a therapeutic outlet. [Getty]
Jillian Mercado is as stylish as she is attractive and she has been a face on the fashion scene ever since she starred in Diesel’s #Reboot campaign. [Getty]
With Spastic Muscular Dystrophy, Jillian Mercado is wheelchair-bound, but why should that stop her? [Getty]
Model Viktoria Modesta walks the runway at the Fashion For Relief charity fashion show to kick off London Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015/16. Viktoria is a Latvian-born pop star, but there’s something particularly unique about her. [Getty]
Viktoria Modesta has only one leg. After an accident at birth left her with sever health problems, she decided to have her leg amputated aged 19. Now she has made it her trademark! [Getty]
Model Lineisy Montero debuted at Prada this season and although you might think there is nothing truly, strikingly different about her, you’d be wrong. [Getty]
19-year-old Lineisy Montero from the Dominican Republic is strutting her stuff for genetic diversity. Despite Naomi Campbell’s superstardom, there are still relatively few successful black models out there. So the fact that Lineisy has been snapped up by Celine, Balenciaga, Givenchy and more is an amazing sign. [Getty]
Carmen Carrera’s stunning face might seem slightly familiar to you? She’s a model and presenter, so this wouldn’t be unexpected. You might know her, though from the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race because she is, in fact, transgender.

As a blogger, Callie Thorpe is more concerned with discussing the trends she’s passionate about, rather than appearing in magazines, but… [Callie Thorpw / Instagram]
…she’s also a wonderful advocate for beauty in all shapes and sizes. Showing that you don’t have to be a stick insect to make things look fabulous. [Callie Thorpe / Instagram]
And she does have the occasional modelling gig too. Here she is in Vol Up 2 magazine. [Callie Thorpe / Instagram]
