designs i did on my nails

I finally finished my set of RWBY semi-silhouettes! I made the one of Ruby almost 3 years ago, and I finally got around to completing the set. I’m super happy with how these turned out! All were done with Adobe Illustrator.

I’ll have prints of these available real soon. I’m also working on a “group shot” of all of them.

Here’s all the fun style notes I did for @animatorsammy for our Animate-A-Grump Segment, along with the outfit/environment guide that I sent out to all the the animators on the project. I went a little overboard for a 12 second segment but it was really fun to try to explain how I do caricatures of these two, and Sammy really wanted to nail down my style! You can watch the finished product here:

I did bees for a few reasons (one of them being the @nailpornography theme for this week). They remind me of my childhood dog and my niece, and I just really love bees. The Black-eyed Susans are for my grandmother, they grow wild on the side of the dirt road where she lives in the countryside. I included a bunch of shots because I am REALLY proud of how these turned out. They are probably my second most favorite design I’ve done (next to my easter bunny nails). There is some tip wear because I waited a bit to paint these but it’s not much so I didn’t bother to fix it.

I used Color Club Halo Hues Harp On It, and Color Show Impeccable Greys with ILNP My Private Rainbow. The rest of the design is acrylic paint.

So I’ve had this idea for awhile…. turning a compact into a took for witchcraft. And here it is! My compact turned traveling scrying mirror 😊

Here’s how I did it….

1. Take old compact and clean it out. Make sure all the makeup is removed.

2. Optional*** remove or cover up the top writing. I was gonna spray paint it, but ended up using nail polish to remove the writing, as I wanted it purely black. You could then if you wanted put designs or sigils on the top or anywhere you liked. For now, I’m keeping it simple.

3. Optional again*** herbs! I used…
Dandelion
Mandrake
Rose petals
Rosemary
Basil
Bay leaf
(Was originally gonna add cinnamon and sage but was put of both)

If you like stones, obsidian (especially gold sheen) and clear quartz would be perfect!!

All those herbs have correspondences of divination, image magic, love divination and prophetic dreams, strengthening mental powers, protection (success and wisdom) in order of the herbs listed 😊

4. Combine the herbs. Keep in mind it’s going in a small space, so unless you’re making more than one I’d suggest keeping the parts small and equal as possible. But if you want more protection then add abit more basil or another bay leaf. It’s up to you

5. Bag up and put in bottom compartment of compact. I was gonna use a pretty purple bag, but it didn’t fit. So it’s in a small plastic baggie instead…

And there ya go!! A compact turned traveling scrying mirror and cheap witchy idea. All these herbs can be found in the kitchen, or grown yourself 😊

Also ideal for more private witches, as no one is gonna necessarily question you having a foundation compact in your bag 💄💋

If you guys take this idea and run with it, or would even like me to make one for you, let me know!! Tag me in posts as I’d love to see the creativity and witchy ideas flow!! Thinking about making a love one as my latest compact is almost dry 😂

Mc who dabbles in nail art

Idea: MC dabbles in nail art and asks to practice on RFA + Saeran + V
Authors Note: I got this idea by looking/getting my nails done by this amazing girl named Jessica who dabbles in nail art (Instagram). If you’re in the FL area make an appointment it’s quality stuff!!

Yoosung :

  • When he first met you at the party he didn’t really notice your nails.

  • It turns out you couldn’t he bit his nails.
  • Sad pup:(
  • You could still do little things. :)
  • You did the base colors after his personal character.
  • Maroons, an amethyst color, and gold
  • You did magic like swirls, as his character is a warlock
  • He was staring at you,
  • To be honest he was paying more attention to you then most of his professors.
  • He bragged to this friends that his girlfriend was so talented.
  • His girl space for the friend zone friends, ended up asking if you would do manicures and designs on them.
  • He started looking if there were any nail art clubs at school.
Jumin :
  • You wanted to do your nails before the party
  • But all your nail stuff was at the apartment….cry
  • So after the party when you moved all your stuff he was the boxes of nail stuff
  • Confused kitten
  • “Love? What’s the purpose of pain in such small bottles?”
  • Nails?
  • You showed him the cat art you did on your hands.
  • He wouldn’t let you do it to him because of work
  • But when ever you did it he would watch intently.
  • His favorite ones you ever did were
  • Royal purple base, on all nails except pinkes
  • On your pinkes you did a white base with grey stripes going down.
  • On your thumbs you did paws
  • On your pointer and ring fingers you did little ears
  • On your middle fingers were eyes, nose and whiskers
  • So when you held you hands out it made a little cat face
  • Kinda ( ^ ) ( • >•< • ) ( ^ )
    Zen :
  • He saw your nails when you went to his house
  • He became obsessed with them as they changed frequently.
  • He always asked where you got them done and you always shrugged “no where.”
  • When you moved in with him he finally saw all your polish and tools.
  • He was dumbfounded to say the least.
  • One night you were looking up things for inspiration.
  • Then you saw ones inspired by zen.
  • “Zenny…?”
  • You asked him you could do some art on his nails.
  • He was hesitant but compiled
  • You did a light pink matte color on all nails except index on both nails doing that a holographic sliver.
  • You drew a wolf on his right thumb and an eighth note on his left.
  • By the time you were done he looked like a fish.
  • His mouth was gaping
  • “Jagi? Thank you!”
  • He tried to move his hands but you slapped his wrist.
  • …..que confused zen.
  • “Nails. Wet. No move.”
  • Him waiting was the worst part.
Jaehee
  • She was stressing about the café
  • You decided to treat her.
  • Treat your wifu
  • You made her breakfast and coffee
  • Then gave her a manicure
  • You messaged her tired hands
  • Then you did a doddie (pastel) yellow.
  • On her middle fingers you drew little coffee cups
  • On her thumbs you did little treats like a cookie on one and doughnut on the other
  • On the pinky you did a lil bunny
  • On the other you did a lil fox
  • On the others you did a little drip style that was like chocolate and sprinkles on top.
  • She loved them was an understatement
  • Everyone who came in after wondered where she got them
  • She pointed over to you
  • At the beginning of every month you did a girls night
  • You did nails for people who asked **nicely** those nights
Seven :
  • When he did the background check he saw your intstagram
  • OOOOH BOIIII
  • After the tsundere shtuff he pulled
  • You moved into the bunker
  • He asked you before if you would do his nails
  • Ofc you said yes
  • You did gold holographic on all his nails except for his pointer fingers
  • On his pointer fingers you did black and drew 707 on one and a star on the other in glow in the dark paint
  • On his thumbs you did a honey budda chip design
  • You did one red and one white line for a varsity line style on his middle finger
  • You did a UFO on his pinkes
  • And left his ring fingers blank
  • He would get the most upset if they chipped or outgrew.

V

  • I mean at first he wouldn’t see your nails
  • ha ha ha….Im not sorry
  • But he could always smell the polish
  • But if/once he got the surgery he would see them
  • He was amazed at all the things you could draw on such small places
  • He would take photos of you doing them and the final products.
  • Then one night you asked if you could do his nails.
  • He’s V could he say no,,
  • You did his nails a color to match his hair.
  • You did a polaroid picture on his thumb. The other one you drew a camera.
  • And in the others you just did various nature designs.
  • Pretty flowers and trees and swirls
  • The one you made sure was included was on his left ring finger you did a cherry blossom design.
  • He was touched on how much you paid attention to him and what he liked
Saeran :
  • This edge master always had his nails black after the mint eye problem.
  • It made him look “Tough”
  • You asked him if you could paint them and do designs on them.
  • He was hesitant, but his painting was sloppy and cracks often.
  • So he let you pain them black, and you could design one nail.
  • He was still not used to people touching him so you took what you could.
  • So you painted his nails black.
  • On his right thumb, you painted a little vanilla ice cream cone.
  • He was amazed at the detail you put in, and secretly wanted more.
  • So each time you did his nails he would let you do another design,
  • Each time you did another ice cream flavor.
  • He had vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chip, etc.
  • He liked it because you always did his top favorites first
  • He finally felt truly cared for.

Well it looks like the Sonic the Hedgehog #268 cover is online now, so I thought I’d post some some progress shots. This was a fun cover to do, and had an interesting design process.

-First, the thumbnails. you can see I didn’t really nail it in the thumbs, but the ideas are starting to form.

-As per specifications from my editor, I made the rough– you can see my original idea for a visual gag with Bean and Bark didn’t make it past the legal department!

-Sonic was too small and not gun-ho enough, so I did two alternate poses. Also I forgot about the sidebar that’s on the comics now, so I had to scoot Tails and Amy over.

-Final pencils!

Covers always go through a lot of revisions, because they’re the most visible part of the comic.

Enjoy!

Kaede Akamatsu: (It’s time for my appointment with Shirogane-san! I gotta go fast.)

Kaede Akamatsu: Shirogane-san! I’m here!

Tsumugi Shirogane: Wow, oh? Why are you so excited?

Kaede Akamatsu: Ahaha, sorry! I’ve never got my nails done before, so I’m looking forward to it!

Tsumugi Shirogane: I-I’ll simply feel under pressure if you’re that excited…

Tsumugi Shirogane: It’s not like I’m good at doing nails, so don’t expect too much, okay?

Kaede Akamatsu: Right!

Tsumugi Shirogane: You’re still expecting too much, aren’t you!?

Kaede Akamatsu: (Anyway, from one hand… Shirogane-san started to paint my nails repeatedly…)

Now that you've posted it, I can't stop thinking about the Dark Creatures!Fluff! Did Grindelwald actually try to /recreate/ the original lycanthropy curse? (It's just the kind of thing he'd do, you must admit). What /did/ happen after Graves' first transformation? Does dragon-shaped Newt curl up with him in the case during Full moons, and thus keep him from mauling himself? How did Graves react to the realization that Newt was a /dragon/? (reminds me of a dragon!Newt worldbuild I did once.)

@hamelin-born You actually just nailed a lot of my headcanons I eventually want to explore with this AU.

How Graves was turned -
In my mind, werewolves (I’m thinking of that scrawny looking Chihuahua thing Remus turned into in the movies, I will never not be upset about that abysmal creature design) in the Harry Potter universe have slowly been degrading over the generations - the original line of creatures being powerful things of legends as most of us think of them today (so in my mind, something like below)

Their venom being the most potent. And each bite victim from there becoming steadily weaker and weaker (until you have something like Remus - scrawny and rabid and balding). Remus being the result of many generations of bite victims until the man that infected him had venom so impotent, it resulted in the following…

Grindelwald is interested in the old ways. In restoring old magic and old rituals and old orders. That includes creatures. In his mind, lack of teaching and knowledge and protection of werewolves (in order to shield the no-majs and keep the secret of magic) has forced werewolves into repopulating in this quick and dirty way as compared to the old ways.

Knowing he would have a decent amount of time with Graves as his captive, he decides to punish the man while also using him in such a way that would most benefit Grindelwald - seeing if the old ways still worked. He doesn’t tell Graves this, lest the man try and resist. Most don’t know of the old ways anymore. Most wouldn’t recognize the ritual. He keeps Graves bound to a comfortable bed lined with enchanted wolf pelts - plush and rich and exotic. In the meager food he feeds him, he hides subtle hints of herbs made to encourage the change - unnoticeable if you don’t know what to look for. Graves no doubt thinks the horrid taste of his food to be part of his captivity.

And when Graves sleeps, Grindelwald performs the rituals. First he leads Graves deeper into slumber lest he wake. Then he fills the room with incense and chants spells in old tongues - and little by little each night, Graves dreams transform from him huddled in a dark cell, awaiting execution at the hands of Grindelwald to him running through a dark forest. And every night, his vision is a little lower to the ground and a little lower to the ground and a little lower to the ground.

It takes three months to complete the change - but when it finally happens, Graves is stunning. A pure image of what lycans once were - tall and proud and majestic. And Grindelwald couldn’t be prouder. He is caught before he could begin to curtail Graves’ will to his own.

Graves struggles with the transformations once he is free - not because he lusts for human blood or anything that most werewolves of his generation (those changed via bites) experience. But because his wolf half is afraid of the city and the bright lights and the strange smells and the loud noises. What is this place? Where are the woods? He runs and he runs but cannot find them - until finally, a wooded place. It had strange, hard paths but it also has grass and trees and earth. It’s there that Newt finds him, exhausted from captivity and starving and afraid. He recognizes the length of wood in Newt’s hand. He knows its bad. But Newt rids himself of the stick and holds out his hands until dark sigils of tattoo like scales suddenly blared to life along the backs of his hands and the pale underside of his wrists. Warm and dark and ancient and understanding. His words are soft and assuring as he tells him he has somewhere Graves can stay. Somewhere he can eat and rest. Somewhere with other creatures. Graves is enough man still to know that while he can’t completely follow what Newt’s suggesting, the man is offering safe harbor. And the wolf cares only for food and woods and kin and somewhere to rest.

They go into the case together. Newt gives him space. He places meat into the field and leaves so that Graves might eat in peace. He lets him rest. He lets him sleep in the dark grass. And when Graves finally wakes, he’s naked and staring up at a smiling, innocent face.

“Feeling better?”

Graves doesn’t remember the scales at first. But he connects the dots after a while. Newt runs to hot to be human. He speaks in tongues. There’s an ancientness to him that calms other creatures - and when he interacts with Newt, the creature inside himself immediately stills and calms beneath the softness of Newt’s voice. But its a dream that finally reminds him. A dream, a memory, from the war. Of Theseus suddenly disappearing and a dragon coming to save their squad at the last conceivable moment. Of hot hands hands sealing his sucking gut wound shut and soothing back sweat slick bangs as Graves tried to feverish tell Theseus all about the dragon he had seen. Theseus to this day mocks him for it. He didn’t see it. So Graves must have been delusional.

But Newt was Theseus Scamander’s brother - a man who had served in the war with dragons. He connects the dots. He’s not crazy. Newt is surprised by how well Graves takes it.

“Do I need special paperwork to be here, director?” Newt says as he lazily rocks himself on Graves’ hips, grinding sensually. A teasing smile on his lips. “Being an illegal creature and what not?”

Graves rescue - could have gone smoother. No one anticipated he was a werewolf. He had no markings to suggest it. He nearly mauls a young auror in fear from so many crowding him. He acts on instinct. Barrels through a window and runs. Newt knows if the man knew how close he had come to slaughtering the men and women he had sworn to protect, Graves would have put himself down right then and there - no questions asked. No one blames him for reacting as a cornered and injured creature would. So no one tells him. And that’s that.

Tropical Palms!! I recreated a design I did from 2014 which I could only find a very tiny picture of on my Deviantart. I REALLY wanted to share it so I just did it again.

The polish colors I used are Kleancolor’s Neon Aqua, Fingerpaints 15min of Frame, and Salon Perfects Yowza Yellow. I also covered my gradient with ILNP My Private Rainbow (which is just a scattered holographic top coat) and as always the design is acrylic paint

DESIGN INTERLUDE TWO

When we ended the last post, I was still trying to design a character named Clara for a story called Wooden Teeth, and kept coming up with designs that were wrong, but kind of fun. I had the idea to do just a one-page short with Not Clara walking through a graveyard, just kind of a mood piece. I decided to see if this girl could carry her own story. I grabbed a half-finished design from an old thumbnail sketch (number three of the sketches below)…

…and fleshed out the details on the page as I drew the comic. Which is, honestly, how I design most of my characters. I rarely do turns or formal design sheets unless I have to hand the character off for someone else to draw. So, the Third Sword was pretty much born here:

If you want to test a design for animation or comics, the best test is to just animate it or put it in a comic. I started thinking about the story of this girl traveling through graveyards. Why she was there, what sort of dangers she would face, etc. I worked out a rough story while I drew a few more test comics (I’ll post those next week). The tests worked out whether she could fight convincingly with that coat on (from a purely visual perspective), how the fabric would work in the wind, whether the design held up in close-ups and medium shots. And as I went I adjusted the design bits at a time. Filled in gaps of things I hadn’t had to draw in previous comics. And there’s some stuff I’m still missing. Gaps waiting to be filled.

After a few months of posting this stuff, I got an ask about posting the character designs for a cosplayer. It seemed like a good opportunity to draw turns, so I did:

And now I’m more or less married to the design. A lot of those notes are more or less wrong, more me trying to figure out my materials than me informing the cosplayer.

But most of my design process is NOT that formal. This, for example, is all I drew to design the Young Third Sword, who we meet at the beginning of the comic:

That’s it.

Now, I did a lot of RESEARCH for that sketch, looking at different kinds of donkeys and dresses and lanterns (I dropped the lantern, eventually), looking at representations of the period I was going for and then stuff actually FROM the period I was going for. And I did a lot of thinking about it. But I only did the one sad sketch as a design. And then nailed down the particulars on the page.

I work this way partly because that keeps it fresh for me and then partly because I don’t have a lot of free time, and I can’t be spending all day doing turns and sewing patterns for every character in the comic. I prefer to be spending my time on actual pages. So my designs are generally pretty loose.

I actually LIKE doing turns, though, and love doing the math and pose-outs on characters I design at work. I just don’t always have that luxury. And I like to be productive. At some point even planning turns into procrastination.

I’ll post some more next week on how this design evolved over the other two test comics (along with those comics) and then, hopefully, we’ll get back to the story.

‘Till next time.

I thought that Rock Pop could use a friend/bandmate! c; I don’t have a name nailed down but been thinking about Star Jam, but up to you!

I left their gender pretty up in the air too, but you can bet they’re a showoff fashionista and probably hard to get along with

I hope you like!!

Don’t (But Do)

maybe a little thing where lynn loves talking dirty to you in a situation where she definitely should not be doing that?? 👀👀

Hope this is close to what you had in mind, anon.

We bought a house! 🙇🏻‍♀️ We’ve been moving for what feels like forever and we’re still unpacking but my studio is making serious progress! Did you see my story last week about my @ikeausa desks and @thecontainerstore storage? I used my trusty @ikeausa picture frame shelves for my polish wall and now I can finally paint again! I can honestly say my polish collection is one of my prized possessions 💕 Do you spy any of your favorite brands?

I’ve wanted to do animatics of musical songs as animatic practice for THE LONGEST TIME. And I’ve finally decided to stop worrying about getting it wrong and just do it! The first one I’m doing is Hamilton, so here’s a sketch I did to try and get some designs nailed down before I begin. I want to be inspired off of the actors, but also do my own interpretations of the characters…

So here’s Hamilton and Seabury. I’m sure you can guess which song I want to do just off of that. ;)
