desert backpacking

Sunset from the south rim of the Chisos Mountains. Still one of the cooler places I’ve backpacked to, the view from here is endless as you gaze across the border into the mountains of Mexico.

White Sands has some of the most incredible patterns that form in the gypsum dunes.  During my recent trip, there hadn’t been any significant wind for at least a week so clean crests on the dunes were few and far between.  However there were some interesting close up patterns like this because the most recent breeze was from the opposite direction of the typical prevailing winds.

Backpacking in the Iranian Deserts. Some nice outcrop and rock views, lots of pitting on the rock surfaces from salt

Even with clear skies the dunes of White Sands turn incredible colors during twilight.  The deep blue and purple hues of Earth’s shadow can be seen rising above the dunes.
