describing appearance

  • what she says: I'm fine
  • what she means: why is Dorian Gray never played by people with blond hair? why is Dorian always depicted as all pale and dark? oscar literally describes his hair as gold like two seconds after we meet him. directors apparently feel like they have to make Dorian look dark dangerous and brooding, but he's not supposed to look dark and dangerous and brooding. That's the whole point. No one ever suspects him because he looks like an innocent little cherub with golden curls and rosy cheeks. His physical appearance is described with terms that Western literary tradition, during the nineteenth century in particular, associated with goodness and godliness, and this is intentionally juxtaposed with the blackness of his soul. If you intentionally play him as someone who looks like a Byronic hero, much of the symbolism of his character is lost, right?
Ryder Character Questions

Just some fun character development/get-to-know-them questions! Warning, there are some basic spoilers.

  1. The basics! Whats their full name, gender, and sexuality? Describe their general appearance and/or include a picture. Is there anything you canon beyond what the game allows?

  10. How have they dealt with the aftermath of Habitat 7? How deeply does this effect them?
  11. As they unlock the memories, how does this change, if at all, their view of their parents?

  13. Explain the way they feel about the rest of the Tempest crew?
  14. How about Nexus leadership and the people on the Nexus in general?
  15. What were their reactions to the Angara and the Exiles? How did learning there was a whole new species in Helius affect them? How did news of the rebellion affect them?
  16. What about their interactions with the Kett?
  17. Did Ryder fall in love? If so, with whom? What drew them to that person? Would their sibling approve?
  18. What does Ryder do in their spare time? What are their hobbies and interests? Do they share these with their friends, or are they more private?
  19. How do they feel being in command of the Tempest? Whats their favorite part of the ship? Least favorite?
  20. How about driving the Nomad? Are they a good or terrible driver?
  21. How do they feel about their connection with SAM? What’s their views on AI in general? Knowing Milky Way history and the attack on Eden Prime and the Citadel a recent memory, did the Geth influence this view? Does their view on SAM change?
  22. Favorite world they landed on? How do they feel getting to be the first human to step in many of these places?
  23. How do they feel about the Remnant? Are they worried? Curious? Simply accepting of what they can do with it?
  24. Do they ever wish they could just return to the Milky Way? Do they miss anything in particular about their old home? Did they bring anything special with them?
  25. How do they feel about what they’ve accomplished in Helius? Are they proud? Worried? Do they feel positive about the chances for a cluster-wide unity? If they could change anything that had happened since everyone arrived in the cluster, what would it be and why?

Feel free to reblog, but do your fellows a solid and shoot them a number to answer first.

Describing Character Appearances

Anonymous asked: “Do you have any tips on how to describe characters effectively? I always find myself dumping a paragraph on their appearance the moment they appear which often really halts the action.”

Even in great manuscripts, character descriptions can come off pretty clunky. Some writers will get pretty creative to minimize that aspect of it, but it’s usually there to some degree no matter what. Though character descriptions might bog down the writing to some extent, I know they’re necessary. As a reader, I would feel that something is missing if a character wasn’t adequately described. With that said, descriptions do not have to be long, just long enough to help the reader picture him or her.

There are a few ways strategies to describing characters that can help avoid that long description dump at the first sight of a new character:

  • Someone: Scarecrow looks so ugly in this comic.

  • Someone: But why does he have to look so gangly and awkward? Clearly the artist doesn't know how to draw. This is why I prefer Cillian Murphy!
  • Me: He's suppose to look unsettling, grotesque and dare I say it...ugly. It's one of his most important character traits. His fellow professors mocked him for his appearance, giving him the Scarecrow nickname, a crucial part of his identity.
  • Someone: You're no fun.
  • Me: *grinning* The best Scarecrows are ugly Scarecrows

this post gave me the realization that if yuugi described his physical appearance in a list it would just sound like something straight out of my immortal.

My name is Yuugi Mutou. I’m short. I wear a black tank top with a black studded collar.  I have black leather pants on and black boots with straps on them.  I wear studded leather bracelets and I have a golden Millennium Puzzle that looks like an upside down pyramid hanging from a chain around my neck (not like those jewelry chains but like a utility chain).  My hair is really tall and spiky with purple streaks in the back and blond bangs that look like lightning. My eyes are purple and I have winged eyeliner. My friend that lives in my necklace said I have no fashion sense. I put up my middle finger at him.

anonymous asked:

I love ur blog it's definitely one of my faves!! Could I get a super fluffy, lovey-dovey, mushy scenario where todoroki is feeling self conscious about his scar and when his partner finds out they shower his scar in kisses and tell him how handsome and wonderful he is and maybe todo gets a bit emotional?

((aaa this didn’t turn out as mushy as I’d intended but I’m hella tired and I haven’t posted anything for days so here oops))

He probably didn’t think you’d noticed, but you were fully aware that Shouto did not like his face. It was easy to see his point of view, you certainly wouldn’t care for your appearance if it gave you so much grief and a scar over your eye, but you just couldn’t agree with him. If there were a physical embodiment of “ugly,” he’d be the inversion. He was, to put it frankly, a beautiful person. But he couldn’t tell.
You found him one evening staring into the mirror, frowning. Next to his hand was a small, flesh-colored bottle and a little sponge. Was that concealer? He hadn’t noticed you yet, so maybe you could watch him for a minute.
He picked up the makeup and you could practically hear his internal dialogue. “Is this okay? Maybe I’ll look better. Uraraka hasn’t even noticed I’m borrowing this.” Yeah, that was definitely Uraraka’s. “Shouto, what’re you doing?” You finally turned the corner and he froze up.
“Nothing.” His hand shifted, knocking the bottle somewhere to be found later. “I didn’t see you there.”
“I know. I did that on purpose.” You moved closer, draping your arms over his shoulders. “Why’d you steal someone’s concealer? You look fine!”
He wasn’t looking at you. He was pointedly looking at anything but you. Embarrassment was obvious on his face, brows and jaw locked in place. “‘It’s not stealing if you give it back.”
“That’s not the point I’m making!” You gently flicked the back of his head, then leaned up to kiss him under the eye. “You don’t need that. You’re already so handsome, Shouto, don’t try to get rid of that.”
If it was even possible, his mouth set itself into even more of a line. “It’s gross… I  just wanted to look like I used to. Nobody should have to look at… this.”
“What, when you were five? Sweetie, people don’t look the same as they did when they were little! I sure don’t!” You rubbed your thumb over the scar and he relaxed into it on reflex. “And I want to look at… that. I wouldn’t be dating you if I didn’t, right?”
He hesitated for a minute before finally muttering “…Right.”
You grinned and kissed him one more time. “Alright, my handsome boy, I’m going to take a shower. When I’m done I’m going to come back in here, you will be concealer-free, and you are gonna sleep over in my room, alright? I’ll be back in ten!” You waved at him, skipping away to wash off the long day.
Todoroki Shouto did not cry. It didn’t matter how much you made him happy, or how perfect you were, he did not cry. He did, however, fail to suppress a small, wavering smile when he thought about how you would never even let him try to hate himself.

The POC!Potter Week returns May 23-June 3 brought to you by @emmelinevvance and @swearwolflupin!

What this is: We noticed the lack of diversity in Harry Potter fancasts which led us to create POC!PotterWeek in an attempt to promote the creation of edits that are inclusive and feature people of color (POC) in the fandom. The week was so successful in March that we’re doing it again! We’re incredibly excited to see what you all create this time around. This month we will also be working with @pctter in celebration of her reaching 8k followers so stay tuned for more details!

How it works:

  1. Reblog this post if you’re participating, and send us an ask so we can add you to the page!
    1. In the ask, give us your name + a one to two line description of yourself or a short quote you like.
    2. If you participated last time, you’ll still be featured in both participants sections.
    3. If you’re not participating, tagging it as signal boost would be helpful. That way we’ll know who’s who.
  2. Tag us in your creations in the first five tags (We’ll be tracking #pocpotterweek)
  3. Make sure it includes some mention of a character as a person of color, unless they’re canon poc!
  4. For types of creations: be sure to send your questions our way or check out our FAQ if you’re not positive about anything!!
    1. Fanart/Gifsets/Edits/Aesthetics: The fancast should be POC! Mixed race and white-passing counts, if anyone was wondering, and so do Jewish fancasts!
    2. Fanfic: Make sure to describe their appearance or have them do something that makes it clear they’re poc: (for example, have the character use a second language, have them study a language for their culture, etc.)
    3. Playlists: The fancast in the cover should be POC or a song should be in a different language/talk about being POC!
  5. We’ll reblog your posts!! We’ll tag them with your url and the type of creation.
  6. Even if you don’t participate, follow us to see everyone’s amazing creations!

The themes:

  • Sunday - Next Gen Era
  • Monday - Lightning Era
  • Tuesday - Wizarding Schools
  • Wednesday - Minor Characters
  • Thursday - Favorite Ship
  • Friday - Marauders Era
  • Saturday - AU Day

After discussing what we have to do to be prepared for the week, we have decided that we need a bit more time to make this the best it can be. Therefore, the start date has been pushed back one week. The week will now take place May 28 - June 3.

Those who have already sent messages saying you will participate, we apologize for the inconvenience and will be reaching out to you to see if you would still like to create something.

If people could please signal boost this new information that would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to message us with any questions.

So i did this . Bonus :

Request: Jughead is asexual, but becomes confused because he gets weird feelings whenever he sees you.

Requested by: anonymous

Great. I was already late for the first day of school. I didn’t really care about the tardy, but my first period was creative writing, the only class I was actually excited for. I wanted to miss as little as possible.

I rushed down the hall, eyes searching for room 1208. Once I found it, I stopped, straightened my bag, and opened the door.

Every face turned towards me as I walked into the room. Mrs. Holt turned away from what she was writing on the board to give me a stern look. “And why are we late, Mr….?”

“Jughead Jones. And, uh, my alarm didn’t go off this morning.”

She glared at me over the edge of her glasses before gesturing to the only open seat in the back of the room. “Take a seat, Mr. Jones. And don’t be late again.”

As I walked towards my new seat, my eyes rested on the girl in the next desk over. She was too absorbed by whatever she was reading to even glance up at me as I sat down.

Not long after I had gotten settled in, Mrs. Holt had given us an assignment. “To get to know your new classmates, I want each of you to partner up with the person next to you and write a detailed description of them. Today I want you to focus on their appearance and tomorrow we’ll work on describing personality traits.”

I sighed. I didn’t really want to have to talk to more of the people in this school than I had to. Of course Mrs. Holt had to ruin this class for me.

I turned towards the girl next to me. She hadn’t looked up from her book all period. I cleared my throat to get her attention. She sighed, closing her book and looking up at me.

As she looked into my eyes, my breath caught in my throat, causing me to cough. She was so much prettier than she seemed at first. I definitely wouldn’t have a problem describing every detail of her face.

Wait. Was I actually excited? To stare at some girl whose name I didn’t even know?

“Yes?” She asked, seeming a bit impatient.

“Uh, we have to do the assignment…” I trailed off as I stared at the wall over her head. I didn’t want to creep her out by staring at her. I already knew it was going to be weird when we had to do this assignment.

“What is it?”

“We have to, um, describe each other’s appearances.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out a notebook. She continued to rummage around in her bag as I took out my laptop and opened it.

“Uh, hey. Do you have a pencil I can borrow?” She asked, flashing an awkward smile. It was pretty cute.

"Cute”? Did I really think that was “cute”? I’ve never called a girl “cute” before. What was happening?

"Yeah.” I reached into my bag and grabbed a pencil. As I reached over to hand her the pencil, her fingers brushed gently across my hand. I could feel the warmth of her skin touching mine and as soon as her fingers were gone, the area she had touched turned cold. I retracted my hand quickly and began rubbing them together in hopes of warming up.

What was happening? All I had done was briefly touch the girl’s hand. Why did her touch warm my skin so much? I wanted to feel that warmth again. I wanted to hold her hand.

Wait what?? I’ve never been one for physical affection, but this girl was doing something weird to me.

"I’m [Y/N],”

"What?” My mind snapped out of its trance.

"I’m [Y/N]. You’re going to need my name for the writing assignment.” She laughed.

Oh. I shook my head, trying to clear it. Focus, Jughead. Focus on your assignment.

"Why don’t you turn your desk towards mine so it’s easier for us to look at each other?”

I did as she suggested and we both began to work in silence. I thought it would be awkward to have to stare at this girl and have her stare back at me, but every time she looked up at me, I felt my heart speed up.

Every once in a while our eyes would meet, and she would smile at me. I couldn’t help but smirk back.

I got so caught up in my staring and writing that I jumped when the bell rang.

[Y/N] was already standing and packing her bag to go. I couldn’t let her walk away without a plan to see her again.

"Um, [Y/N]?”

“Yeah, Jughead?”

“I didn’t finish my writing…” Was I supposed to ask her for a picture? No, that was creepy. “Can we meet up at Pop’s tonight around 6 so I can finish?” I asked cautiously. I didn’t want to come on too strong. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to finish my writing or if I just wanted to see her again before tomorrow.

“Yeah, sure.” She smiled brightly. “See you then.” She waved as she slung her backpack on her shoulder and walked away.

I stayed in my seat, shocked by my actions. All of this was so uncharacteristic of me. Did I… like… a girl? I had so many unanswered questions.

Introducing the POC!Potter Week of March 19th-25th, from @emmelinevvance and @swearwolflupin!

What this is: If you didn’t already know, the two of us are talking practically 24/7, which means we see all the same things and if one of us hasn’t seen something, the other will probably send it to them sooner or later. Both of us have noticed something pretty obvious - the lack of people of color, aka POC, in the HP fandom. Even if the character is minor, they’re immediately fancast as white (can you sense how salty we are?). According to Emily, “Ok I’m always a slut for jily and I love all edits of them, but I’m also so sick of James being cast as Pasty Generic White Boy™,” which brings us to this!

How it works:

  1. Reblog this post, and if you’re participating, send us an ask and we’ll add you to the page!

    1. Fanart/Gifsets/Edits/Aesthetics: The fancast should be POC! Mixed race and white-passing counts, if anyone was wondering, and so do Jewish fancasts!
    2. Fanfic: Describe their appearance or have them do something that makes it clear they’re poc: (for example, have the character use a second language, have them study a language for their culture, etc.)
    3. Playlists: The fancast in the cover should be POC or a song should be in a different language/talk about being POC!
    4. Submitting headcanons to the @hp-headcanon blog (which we also run): Essentially the same rules as the fanfic!

One last thing - We’re posting this early to ensure that everyone gets to see this, please reblog this to spread the word ^.^ We’re incredibly excited to see all of these!

Booklr! Let's put together a list of book tropes we really bloody hate and would love to never read again ever.

I’ll start:

- The main character randomly seeing themselves in a mirror and deciding to describe their entire appearence in detail. Usually includes something about how ugly or bland they think their perfect, model-like face/body is.

- Love triangles. Do I even need to say anything else?

- The borderline abusive, supposedly mysterious but actually just really boring love interest. Bonus points if this one pairs up with the love triangle one.

- When the author has zero knowledge about something (usually computers or other technical stuff) but decides to claim a side character is literally the best person in this field ever and prove it by making them do super average stuff they personally think is impressing because they just have no idea. Like, restarting a computer or guessing someone’s password does not make your character a mastermind hacker. Please just stop.

I have compiled a whole list of 10 theories that nobody has talked about (I think) for A Court of Wings and Ruin coming out on May 2!!!!!!!!!

This may be Part 1

1- Cassian could be bisexual?
I know this may not be much of an importance to most people. But I was rereading the exclusive short story Wings and Embers when I came across this:
“ Cassian had been jealous of- Mor’s shy glances at Azriel in those first few weeks, the fact that his dearest friend and brother… was looking at someone else.“ Perhaps I’m over thinking it probably. I’m hoping the whole feud will all three of them result in happiness.

2-Nesta could be Illyrian? Nesta appears has always been different from the others. For example even Tamlin’s glamour didn’t even work on her. In the scene of the cauldron when Nesta came out it was said that something was different about her she didn’t have the beauty and grace of Elain’s High fae form but power. Feyre describe her appearance and when talking about her ears she stoped at a ”-“. I think ”-“ are one of SJM best forms of foreshadowing because her ears are curved just like and ILLYRIAN!!!! (Hell yes!) A stupid thought but a possibly that Nesta’s mate could be from the Autumn Court considering the bloody drawer that Feyre painted had the flames on them. Actually scrap this possibility Nessian forever!!!!!

 I think these are definite:

3- The flipping Wall finally shatters opens the human realm to the immortal realm.

4- The scene with Feysand doing the 55 on a wall. (wink wink*)

5- The unleashing of Amren who I believe is a Firedrake.

6- We finally get to meet Drakon and Miryam

7- There will be some significance in Lucien’s mechanical eye.

8- Mor’s Mate?! So many of us ship Moriel and are complete trash for it. I’m assuming that they may not be mates. a) In most of the couples we have encountered their mate bond clicks almost instantly at first sight . For example Rhysand’s mother and father in the Illyrian war camp misted the guards holding her. Rhysand and Feyre when she became an immortal near the end there was a whole scene when the bond snapped in place ,because it became more pronounced now that she was high fae. And Lucien and Elain well, I don’t have to explain anything. So what I’m saying is that it is taking a really long time for there mating bond to click or that Azriel is really good at hiding it. b) Near the end of ACOMAF in Hybern Mor charges at King Hybern with a dagger planing to slaughter him and end it right there. But all the sudden she stops a foot away. In the first time reading it I assumed it was because of Azriel crying out. But now many readings later it could just be the fact that Hybern could be her mate.

And when you think about it they both are extremely powerful and mighty.

9- Baby on the way?! This one has been a speculation for a while. Whether it be the bitch Ianthe or Feyre darling. They both did the 55 on Calanmai (Chapter 55).

a) The book never mentioned that Feyre took a tonic

b) Again foreshadow(ment) of pregnancy’s and children, are brought up so many times with in the book.

c) The Bone Carver for some reason Feyre saw a little boy 8 years old with black hair blue eyes. Sound familiar? DORIAN HAVILLIARD  Feysands child? Remember Rhysand has black hair so black that it looks blue and his eyes are so blue that it looks violet and Feyre has bronze/brown hair and grey blue eyes. Are we going to have little Feysandlings???? It will just add to the drama.

And for Ianthe and Tamlin its Calanmai - FIre Night we all know its the fae orgy festival.

10- Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them. Here in Hybern! When the Book of Breathings two halves were joined together Amren said that the force would be so strong that it would ripple like a bell and all creatures will come to seek the source. Perhaps the weaver, the monstrosoties in the prison.

So do we finally get to see where the multiverse cross over?

Imagine Rowan in hawk form looking for Aelin just OKNJDUJOJ  AKJNDLKJKL  JABCIJXN IJIOX!!!!!

anonymous asked:

Im thinking of writing a fanfic! Do you have any suggestions on how to make it as good as possible?

yay anon! I’m happy new writers are still coming in. Um, I’ve only got experience in very specific genres but I guess general tips I try to use myself are:

🍓 Write for yourself and a few friends. Seriously this sounds trite but if you just focus on what you want to read (or what your friends want to read) then you’re less likely to get stressed about being a crowd pleaser. When i first started, I was obsessed with being “deep” and stylistically “high brow”. It was AWFUL. my writing was pretentious and shit AF.  Hopefully ti’s not like that now haha…

🍓 have a rough plan to avoid plot holes and inconsistencies.

🍓 try to have rational motivations and avoid lazy plot devices - e.g. conflict due to 2 people refusing to communicate for no apparent reason.

🍓 avoid cliches & sexism - e.g. The Female Character That Comes Between The OTP, dead wives/girlfriends, sexist Omega verse dynamics. These reduce your characters to flat 2D things i feel.

🍓 avoid templates and archetypes in characterisation.

🍓 avoid describing characters by their appearance - e.g. “The platinum haired man said _____”. oh god. just please don’t do this.

🍓 avoid expositions unless absolutely necessary.

That’s all i can think of off the top of my head right now. What about you guys? Do you guys have any writing tips? Please leave me a reply!! I think the hardest thing for me to master is pacing and konwing how to write fast paced without being choppy. Don’t know how to do that…
