I had an idea for a tatooine slave culture saying: "gilding the chains and calling them jewelry", ie, a do-gooder who bought a slave and "freed" them, only for the do-gooder to turn around and (unintentionally?) end up keeping them around in someway. Kind of like the Cliegg and Shmi relationship can be read. Basically, one side thinks the other is free and the other isn't... exactly willing to clarify that they feel pressured to stay. This also kinda applies to Anakin and the Jedi

What a fantastic metaphor, anon, thank you for sharing!

There are probably a lot of oblique ways of talking about this, too, that reference the metaphor without saying it outright. Like, Kitster might say about Shmi, “Yeah, I heard Cliegg gave her some jewelry,” and that sounds perfectly innocuous, but everyone knows what it really means.

(Jewelry, it should be noted, is an entirely different thing from japor wood charms, which are elements of folk magic and religion, and often associated with freedom marks.)

I think Qui-Gon definitely qualifies as a chain-gilder as well, though it took Anakin a while to realize that, and I’m not sure he ever let himself think consciously about it - at least, not while the Jedi Order still stood. (Darth Vader is very aware of his status, but then, Palpatine isn’t exactly a chain-gilder, either. He’s a much more straightforward Depur.)

The Krayt Dragon’s Heart

An Explanation: Last night I was sketching some designs for a tattoo I want to get; the Unfettered symbol from Fialleril’s Tattooine Slave Culture inside the Rebel Alliance symbol, when I had the thought that the Rebel Alliance symbol kind of looks like a stylized dragon with the Unfettered symbol at its heart. Then this happened. I hope you like it and that I didn’t accidentally misrepresent anything…

This is the story of the First Unfettered child of Ar-Amu, and how the Krayt Dragon acquired a new heart.

Arctium, Asteraceae

I haven’t seen burdock in a long time, then suddenly two plants within a week, the only ones I’ve found since moving to Scotland. It didn’t help they both seem to share traits of A. lappa, greater burdock, and A. nemorosum, wood burdock, so for all I know they could have been hybrids of the two species, but I’m leaning towards them being the latter. All species of burdock are of Eurasian origin and have been introduced to and naturalised in many other temperate areas.

These biennials with thistle-like flowers have a long history of cultivation as culinary plants, with young shoots, leaves, stems and roots all being edible, still particularly popular in Asian cuisine -the first year root is the vegetable known as gobō in Japan, but this part is the most consumed anywhere the plants grows. Here in the UK it is also part of a fizzy drink of Medieval origin called dandelion & burdock, which you can easily find in stores (but that I’m personally not particularly fond of, but I’m not a fan of fizzy drinks other than beer to be fair). The poulticed leaves are antibacterial and have been used against external sores, ulcers, swelling and insect bites, but the root is again the part most used for its medicinal properties. Fresh, or dried and made into a tea, it’s diuretic, depurative and detoxifying. It isn’t advisable to use this plant if you’re pregnant though, as it can cause complications.

If you find a burdock plant in the next period you can collect the seeds, if ready, and sow them in late autumn. By next spring or summer you’ll be able to harvest and use the root at its best.

So I delved into your Double Agent Vader ‘verse and couldn’t get out. Then I found your slave culture tag.

And then this happened.

So imagine that the easiest instruments to make would be drums and woodwinds. And these instruments are taken care of very carefully, as in Depur can’t take these away. I imagine that they are easy to disassemble and/or hide and that yes there are riotous, fun songs. With leaps and bounds and backflips.

But then there are songs like these.

Songs that are a little wistful, a little clumsy. Songs that have a surprisingly strong heartbeat.

Songs that echo into the desert night and mourn a freedom that they have yet to know.

more on the tatooine names what would the names starkiller, galen, juno and kota, ahsoka if any mean in Amatakka , and what is the word for jedi in Amatakka.

Well none of those are Tatooine names, so.

Ahsoka is, of course, a Togruta name, given to her by her parents before she was taken to be a Jedi. I’m sure it has meaning in the Togruta language, but I’ll be honest, I haven’t done much in the way of Togruta worldbuilding. (Yet? We’ll see.)

The other names are from the Expanded Universe, which I don’t consider canon. Nothing against it if you like it - I just don’t particularly care about the EU and have no headcanons related to it.

Of course, Disney recycled the name Galen in Rogue One, and they used Starkiller in that movie I don’t talk about, but given the context of the other names you listed I suspect you were asking about the EU characters.

Juno is the name of a Roman goddess, the equivalent of the Greek Hera (another name that secondary Star Wars material used - idk why they seem so into this goddess in particular). Galen is a Greek name, most famously the name of an ancient Greek physician. I have no idea about Kota.

Starkiller as a name initially looks like something that would fit into the Tatooine naming pattern (and, of course, it was Luke’s last name in early drafts of ANH), but ultimately I don’t think it actually fits. It’s a shockingly violent and destructive name, and if it were applied to anything in Amavikka culture, it would be more likely as an epithet for Depur, who maims and destroys, than for Ar-Amu or any positive figure.

The Amatakka word for Jedi is just Jedi, though it’s pronounced more like “Jee-dai”. Attitudes toward the Jedi vary pretty wildly. No Jedi ever actually come to Tatooine, so most people see them more as figures of legend than any kind of political reality. And even as legends people are pretty divided on them. The Jedi are seen as defenders of the Core Worlds, and that can play out as a simple heroic story, or be touched with resentment because, no matter how heroic the legends, the Jedi will never appear in the Outer Rim.

It began, as so many stories did, with Ekkreth captured by Depur and made a slave. Vader remembered asking his mother once why there were so many stories about Ekkreth as a slave. She’d looked at him very seriously and said, “Oh no, Ani. They aren’t stories about Ekkreth the slave at all. They’re stories of how Ekkreth becomes free. Depur has a thousand cruelties, but Ekkreth has a hundred thousand tricks. No one can hold the Sky-walker forever.”

Nettles

Stinging nettle is an astringent, diuretic, tonic, anodyne, pectoral, rubefacient, styptic, anthelmintic,
nutritive, alterative, hemetic, anti-rheumatic, anti-allergenic, anti-lithic/lithotriptic, haemostatic, stimulant, decongestant,
herpatic, febrifuge, kidney depurative/nephritic, galactagogue, hypoglycemic, expectorant, anti-spasmodic, and anti-histamine.

The stalks of nettle yield a strong fiber which can be made and used as thread, rope, twine, fishing nets and paper.
The plant is rich with vitamins and minerals which make its beneficial properties endless.
It can be used to regulate menstruation and help flow of milk in nursing mothers, it can help treat eczema, poor circulation, promote hair growth, help anemia and complexion.

Nettles are an old remedy for arthritis and joint pains, the sting though irritating is very beneficial and healing.
It protects against, internal bleeding, lung congestion, stomach acid, aches, hay fever… it helps diminish susceptibility to colds and a great blood purifier…. to name a few.
In general, nettle is fucking awesome.

Cooking or steaming nettles is a wonderfully delicious way to acquire its properties and healing attributes. In honesty it
tastes like a more flavorful form of spinach and is scrumptious over quinoa with a bit of sauteed garlic, onion and almond slices.
Nettle teas, oils, tinctures, salves and the like are other great ways to utilize the plant.
My favorite way to drink nettle tea is with a dollop of honey, pinch of brown sugar and once the tea has
steeped dark i put a splash of soy milk! Kind of like a nettle tea latte.

Nettle is associated with the serpent, mars and the element of fire.
It is best to harvest in the spring time and of course those who are not stoked on the stinging nature of the plant will want to wear gloves and thicker clothing  ( stingers can pierce through thin cloth) but for those folks who dont mind the
tingles and burning medicine of the plant, harvest bare hand and enjoy the exhilarating rush of energy that comes with each sting.

The leaves can be dried, steamed or cooked fresh…. you can also freeze them after being dried and steamed for a longer shelf life.
yummmm

It is believed that Nettle can be burned to drive out negative energies/unwanted spirits and can be used for protection bags or curse breaking.
Some other folk beliefs and lore associated with the plant…

A bunch of freshly cut nettles placed under a person’s sick bed helps to facilitate a rapid recovery.

Carried in the hand nettles ward off ghosts and evil spirits.

Dried and sprinkled around the home nettle keeps out evil spirits.

Combing nettle juice through the hair combats baldness.

According to many Romani , nettle would grow primarily in spots where the dwelling places/passages of
earth fairies were believed to be.

If you live anywhere within the pacific northwest you should be able to encounter nettle pretty easily… it is everywhere.
Very recognizable by its alternating leaf pattern, serrated edges, hearty stocks and little hairs… looks very much like a tall lanky cousin of mint.

So much love for this wonderful plant.

Herb of the Week-Heather

Common names

Heather
Scotch Heather

The familiar heather plant - Calluna vulgaris - belongs to the Ericaceae plant family. The plant is an evergreen shrub that has many branching stems and can reach one to two feet in length when full grown. The heather is characterized by the possession of minute and needlelike leaves, each of which is about one sixteenth to one eight of an inch in length. The leaves are borne in opposite pairs and are clumped together in four rows along the short green twigs on the branches of the plant. The heather bears purplish pink flowers with occasional white colored flowers - from July through September; the characteristic flowers are almost bell shaped. In morphology, the shrub is a tough, bushy, and woody evergreen perennial.

The purple heather flowers have a bell shaped corolla that is two mm across, formed by the joining of four purple colored petals into a tube. The corolla is shorter than the four purple sepals, each of which is two to four mm in length. Heather flowers are borne on a narrow shaped and leafy raceme that can grow to nine cm in length; these racemes grow on the axils of the leaves lying on the upper shoots of the plant. The fruits of the heather are very tiny, rounded and hairy capsules with four cells inside each fruit. The minute seeds, each 0.7 mm in length are strongly meshed in the fruit. The shape of the leaves is oblong; each leaf can reach a maximum of 3.5 mm in length. Most leaves do not bear any hair; however, they can at times be downy, often lying in overlapping positions in four vertical rows along the twigs on the branches. Leaves have a dark green color when tender, but tend to turn brown as they mature. The stems of the heather are woody, wiry and pliable. Tender stems are initially covered with dense hair, these become hairless and smooth in later stages of growth and maturity.

Double Agent Vader fic: Rocks and Water

Finally a new DAV fic! Sorry for the long wait, everyone. (If you want to read the whole series, the best place to do so is on AO3.)

This one begins very shortly after Trophies, but covers a span of several months during Anakin’s wild bantha chase for the location of the Rebel base between ANH and ESB. It will be a two-parter, as well: the next part will be from Leia’s point of view.

In part one you get: Anakin building a lightsaber and definitely not having any conflicted thoughts about Obi-Wan Kenobi, or any parental feelings about Leia. Nope. None at all. Also we get a glimpse of the secret network of free droids within the Imperial ranks. And there’s a lot of Tatooine folk magic. (If Master Obi-Wan could see this, he’d be very grumpy indeed.)

Title is taken from Deb Talan’s song of the same name, which is basically the Anakin and Leia theme song for this ‘verse.

Warnings for: some body horror (mainly because Anakin has a morbid sense of humor), implied abuse, medical situations, burning, and…casual talk about murder?

Part 1: The Lightsaber

His new left hand was nearly identical to the old one. Anakin smiled to himself without any real humor as he tested the fingers. He wondered darkly if his Master had a store of such things somewhere, just waiting. He’d certainly been ready enough with the life support suit, all those years ago.

Harbour Crab (Liocarcinus depurator)

Also known as the Sandy Swimming Crab, the harbour crab is a species of swimming crab (Portunidae) which occurs in the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and Black Sea. Like other members of the family Portunidae the fifth pair of legs on L. depurator are modified into “paddles” which allow the crab to swim throughout the water column.

I have two questions, both about Amatakka. First: do you happen to have a list of words you've decided on?? Like a mini dictionary? Also, the word that means unfettered, kol-depuan, I'm curious about. It seems to have the same root at Depur, so is its "literal" meaning "unmastered"? Or is depuan something like "chains", with a further back common root with Depur, so it DOES literally mean "unchained"? (Linguistics minor here, I love this stuff and am curious. :D)

I do have a list of Amatakka words / roots, yes, but it changes almost daily when I’m working and it’s really unwieldy, so I haven’t shared it anywhere.

I’m so glad someone noticed the connection between depur and kol-depuan. :D Your second suggestion is pretty spot on: the two words have a common root, dep- , which means a chain or fetter. So kol-depuan is literally “unchained,” unfettered, while depur, master, more literally means “the one who binds in chains.”

Depur is, of course, generally translated into Basic as “master,” but the word has none of the potential ambiguities of its Basic counterpart. (When Anakin calls Obi-Wan, Mace, or Palpatine “Master,” he could mean one of several things - teacher, mentor, respected elder, person I am subservient to, person I must obey, owner. But when Anakin calls Palpatine “Depur,” there’s really only one way to interpret that.)

anonymous asked:

As much as I love the idea of the twins celebrating their first birthday in a free galaxy, part of me wishes they could have their awesome family confrontation with Palpatine on Empire Day. (This is probably in no way practical but I can dream...) "My Master, here is a bouquet of flowers and also some steaming hot revolution in 'honour' of this glorious day"

Naw, but it’s gonna be so much better than the confrontation happening on Empire Day.

This ‘verse is all about mythic echoes, so really there’s only one day on which Palpatine can possibly die: Bentu Depuraak.

(And the last thing he will ever hear is Anakin saying, in the voice Palpatine built for him, “And that is the tale of how Ekkreth the Skywalker tricked Depur, and freed himself and his children from slavery.”)

Of course, they’ll send a bouquet to his funeral. It’s only proper.

Double Agent Vader Fic: Shape-Changer

*casually drops in after a week’s absence with surprise fic*

So I didn’t think I would ever write the beginning of Vader’s double agent career, but marajadesbutt sent me an ask about what Anakin’s initial motivation for turning double agent was, and to my surprise, fic happened.

I pondered a lot of different ways all of this could have started, but ultimately, Anakin rebuilds himself in the image of the survival narratives of Tatooine slavery. So it seemed fitting that everything should begin with a story.

(Also ftr I’m going with the idea that Palpatine actually drained Padmé’s life force to keep Anakin alive, since imo that makes the most sense of how Palpatine knows that she’s dead at all.)

His Master liked to say that Vader was born in fire on Mustafar. But Ekkreth was born in the desert.

*

Shape-Changer

Tatooine hadn’t changed.

The suns still blazed, and the heat still beat down, and the sand still got everywhere. That last, especially, was true. Vader could feel it grinding against his metal bones.

He didn’t feel the heat anymore, not within this climate controlled life support suit. And he didn’t feel the burning of the suns, either, or need to shield his eyes against the light or his skin against the biting wind. But he still felt the sand. That would never change.

He almost welcomed it.

Hi fia! I'm an American feeling sad and a little scared tonight. Do you have any Amavikkan folk tale or legend ideas that you've thought of but not written yet? I feel the need to write something good and potentially Ekkreth-ish

I’m right there with you, anon. It’s a frightening time, and it’s okay to feel scared and admit that.

Here’s a few potential writing prompts, if you want to run with a trickster story (presented with as little context as possible, so you can take them in any direction you like):

  • how Ekkreth stole themself
  • how Ekkreth disguised themself to help Depur build a trap for Ekkreth, and then trapped Depur himself inside it
  • how Ekkreth learned to change their shape
  • any of the many exploits of Akar Hinil, famed Twi’lek pirate captain and former slave, said to have plagued the Hutt slave trading routes for years before mysteriously disappearing
  • how Ebra escaped their master, went out into the desert, and received the secret of tzai from Ar-Amu

If you do write something, I’d love to see it!

mkvalkyrie  asked:

okay, so i'm imagining the realization that Luke has when he hears the name Ekkreth with all this spy information stuff and he's like, "Wow, I can't believe this." and everybody is like "What do you mean?" and he can't really explain or talk about it well.

and I just saw like the exact answer to this in someone else’s ask, but still i think it’s going to be awesome

Yeah, Luke’s not going to find out until Bespin (as you know), but it’s still going to be pretty amazing when he does.

I mean, here’s Vader trying to convince Luke not only that he’s his father, but also that they’re actually on the same side, but Luke has no real reason to believe him and even Anakin has to admit that things look pretty bad. As far as Luke knows, Vader has captured Han and Leia and now him, and Leia’s not around to clear things up because she’s off with Lando rescuing Han from Boba Fett, and Artoo is whirring and beeping up a storm but Luke’s not really paying attention (which is unfortunate, since Artoo’s in the know at this point, at least about Vader being Ekkreth). And finally things get wild enough that Anakin basically does have to capture Luke and just…wait for Leia to get back and explain.

Which she does, though Luke is still understandably suspicious and now kind of afraid that Vader has done something to Leia, to trick her like this, and oh no what if Ben and Yoda were right about her?

And then Leia just casually drops the name Ekkreth, probably in an aside to Vader, and Luke goes still.

“What did you call him?” he asks hoarsely.

Leia blinks. “Ekkreth,” she says. “It’s his code name.”

Luke just stares. He swallows hard. He whispers the name under his breath. Leia doesn’t know what’s going on, but Anakin does and he takes a step forward.

Luke looks up at him, half hopeful and half terrified, and whispers, “Ekkreth. What do you call the Emperor?”

“Depur,” says Anakin.

And then Luke starts laughing. He starts laughing so much he can’t seem to stop, and he keeps spitting out half thoughts like, “You’re my - ” and “Ekkreth and Depur,” and “Leia, do you - ” and of course, “Ben, why didn’t you tell me?”

Eventually it all sinks in, and Luke explains to Leia what it all means, and she decides she is never going to let Ekkreth live this down, because after all the grief he gave her about the necessity of absolute secrecy and stealth it turns out he’s been using his actual name as his top-secret code name for like 20 years.

Meanwhile Luke is just utterly thrilled because this is his father, and everything Anakin and Leia said is true and Luke knows it, he knows it, because he’s from Tatooine too and he knows that Ekkreth the Skywalker always tricks Depur.

littleboxoflaughter  asked:

I'm 1000% here for Anakin's Angry Med Techs helping out with the Tatooine Slave Rebellion. I'm 1000% here for Anakin returning to Tatooine, Unfettered. He's killed his Depur and now he's coming for the rest of them. I'm 10000% here for Luke and Anakin taking Leia to Shmi's grave and for Anakin realizing the dream he had when he was a little boy: he learned the ways of the Force and came back to free the slaves.

Basically this is exactly where I see this ‘verse going. :)

I imagine that pretty much as soon as he realizes he’s not actually going to die (a bittersweet realization, but he’s careful not to tell people that, because for some reason they get worried) and he finally gets released from Medical, Anakin will show up at an Alliance top brass meeting and basically demand to know when they’re going to organize an emancipation mission to the Outer Rim.

Everyone looks around awkwardly. Nobody wants to be the first to say anything. Half the people in the room are probably still in mortal terror of Darth Vader, and the vast majority of them haven’t actually seen him without his mask yet. Most of them are pretty unnerved by the scarring, but they’re all trying to act like they don’t notice. It would be awkward as hell even without bringing up Outer Rim slavery.

The silence stretches. Finally Mon Mothma says, “General Skywalker, you must understand that as a new government the Alliance cannot afford to focus - ”

“I understand,” says Anakin. His voice is raspy and so quiet that people have to strain to hear him. It shouldn’t be at all frightening, certainly not in comparison to the voice the mask’s vocoder gave him.

It shouldn’t be.

“Well,” Anakin says, seemingly in an aside to Commander Skywalker, who’s been standing beside his father this whole time, apparently in a show of support (but also ready to catch him if it turns out Anakin isn’t quite as ready to be out of bed as he insists). “I’ve brought down two governments already. I’m sure a third won’t be difficult.”

There’s a very long and deathly silence. “General,” says Mothma at last, but she doesn’t add anything.

“I refer, of course, to the Hutt Cabal,” Anakin says. This is transparently a falsehood. No one calls him on it.

“I understand that the Republic must have other priorities,” Anakin says. Even he seems surprised by the bitterness in his voice. Mothma thinks that maybe he’s forgotten what it’s like to speak without the vocoder filtering his tone. “But this is, after all, a Rebellion. If the worlds of the Outer Rim rise, will this Alliance support us?”

Nobody misses the “us.” Nobody misses the way Commander Skywalker subtly moves, the way he’s now standing not just beside his father, but with him. Nobody misses the relief on Mothma’s face. (Later, people will wonder if perhaps this wasn’t the solution she wanted all along.)

“Of course,” Mon Mothma says. “We are, as you say General, an Alliance of rebels. We will always support any people who seek freedom from tyranny.”

It’s not an officially sanctioned mission. But Mothma makes it clear that any member of the Alliance who wishes to assist the people of the Outer Rim in their uprisings has leave to go.

Quite a few medics join pretty much immediately. Medical personnel, they know, are going to be greatly in need. Only a handful of medics participated in General Skywalker’s surgery, when the bomb was removed, but everybody knows that Medical has the fastest chain of gossip in the Alliance. By this point literally everyone has heard about slave transmitters.

There’s also quite a few Tatooine natives in the Alliance, and the majority of them sign on at once. Some of them, like Luke and Biggs, are freeborn descendants of slaves. Others, like Anakin, are escaped or freed slaves themselves. For them, the fall of the Empire doesn’t yet mean the victory of the Alliance. True victory won’t come until their people are free.

Then there are more than a few Rebels, especially among the younger generations, who volunteer largely out of a sense of friendship and loyalty to someone else who’s going. Luke and Leia both have quite a following.

And, perhaps strangest of all, there’s the handful of Imperial defectors who volunteer out of loyalty to Lord Vad - that is, General Skywalker.

It’s quite a collection of people.

Of course, Anakin’s learned a lot since his padawan days, and he’s not going to go in with a liberating army from on high. That won’t work, of course, and it wouldn’t be right anyway. The troops are for backup. There’s already a resistance on Tatooine, a network of fighters and tricksters and backroom surgeons on the freedom trail. They know what they’re doing. This is their fight. Anakin’s just bringing reinforcements.

(Luke and Anakin will take Leia to Shmi’s grave. They’ll pay their respects to Beru and Owen, too. And Anakin will introduce his kids to their Uncle Kitster, and all three of them will get to meet Kitster’s wife Imer and son Denak for the first time. They’ll find Melee again, and Amee and Wald and even Seek. They’ll celebrate the ritual of return together.)
