depersonalisation-disorder

You will be okay.

You are REAL.
This is actually happening.
The room you are in is real.
This is not a dream.
You exist.
The world around you is real.
You are not dreaming.
This isn’t your imagination.
You aren’t insane.
You are here, breathing in this moment. All of it is real, no matter what your brain is telling you.

It will be alright.

Types of dissociation

1. Amnesia - this is when you can’t remember incidents or experiences that happened at a particular time, or when you can’t remember personal information.

2. Depersonalisation - a feeling that your body is unreal, changing or dissolving. It also involves out of body experiences, such as seeing yourself as if watching a movie or floating above.

3. Derealisation - the world around you seems unreal. You may see objects changing in shape, size or colour, or you may feel that other people are robots or generally unreal.

4. Identity confusion - feeling uncertain about who you are. You may feel as if there is a struggle within to define yourself.

5. Identity alteration - this is when there is a shift in your role or identity that changes your behaviour in ways that others would notice.

Severe Dissocation @ Therapy

Me: I have a fear of losing myself to the point I won’t even be present enough to be able to respond to treatment by my next appointment.

Therapist: Oh no feeling like that is a common symptom! it’s pretty much irrational so don’t worry about it! :).

Me: Oh thank goodness! I'll try not to think about it too much then :).

~the time of appointment arrives ~

Therapist: your dissociation appears to of become so severe that we don’t know how to treat you, you are so deeply removed that we know your brain won't respond to any type of therapy or modern treatment plans we have.

Signs and symptoms of dissociation

- Feeling disconnected from yourself

- Problems with handling intense emotions

- Sudden and unexpected shifts in mood – for example, feeling very sad for no reason

- Depression or anxiety problems, or both

- Feeling as though the world is distorted or not real (called ‘derealisation’)

- Memory problems that aren’t linked to physical injury or medical conditions

- Other cognitive (thought-related) problems such as concentration problems

- Significant memory lapses such as forgetting important personal information

- Feeling compelled to behave in a certain way

- Identity confusion – for example, behaving in a way that the person would normally find offensive or abhorrent.

If somebody gets the courage to tell you what’s going on with their mental illnesses, you fucking listen and be attentive. Especially when it’s shit like a Depersonalization Disorder or BPD.
You don’t fucking ignore them and expect everything to be fine. When they express to you that they’re afraid of an episode coming on, you fucking check to make sure they’re okay.
Common fucking sense.
