“With this hammer, I wasn’t Space Boy or Henry Denton, I was a mighty warrior and I could do anything. I attacked the wall, punching hole after hole into it, and when I’d made enough holes, I tore it down with my bare hands and bloody knuckled. The wall was my bad grades in school- Th ewall was the sluggers and their fucking button. The wall was Marcus. The wall was Jesse. The wall was Mom’s job and Charlie’s daughter. The wall was Diego. The wall was everything I hated, everything I loved.”

“What brought you to the forum on the Square?”

“I live in Denton and I’m tired of looking at this statue. Every time I look at it, I think about the racist history of the United States, and I want my country to be better than that. I think it would be great to have it in a museum that talks about Denton County’s history of race relations and the involvement in the Civil War. I’m a history professor at UNT, and I don’t do American History, but we do have a strong Texas history component. So I have colleagues that study the history of slavery in Texas, the history of Jim Crow in Texas, the civil rights movement in Texas. We have at our disposal in Denton many opportunities to talk about these issues and this would be a good way to get people talking about these issues without commemorating and glorifying them in the center of our town.”
