The concert will make Matthew the world’s youngest ever conductor!
Matthew’s performance will form part of NSO’s ‘Animal Magic!’ show which will also feature Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev.
Neil Bennison, music programme manager at the Royal Concert Hall, said young conductors like Matthew are rare.
Successful conductors have to be team managers, leaders, motivators and diplomats, and these people skills take time to develop and require a level of maturity that only comes with years of experience.Orchestras can be pretty merciless to conductors for whom they have no respect, so you’d have to be a supremely confident young maestro to win over a lot of hardened professional musicians.
Derek Williams, NSO conductor and Matthew’s music teacher, added:
I spotted Matthew’s musical talent very early on in his musical tuition as I’ve been teaching him violin for five years. There aren’t many children who have the ability to conduct a 75-strong orchestra from memory and it’s a really incredible thing to witness.
Can we be honest for a moment and say that it’s rare to hear anything positive on the news, especially when it comes to black children? Matthew Smith is definitely making history. This young man is talented. I hope he does well and goes far.
playing assassins creed and then walking into history class is so weird like

“broke into that palace for fun once”
“solved that guy’s murder”
“COMMITTED that guy’s murder”
"they didn't have the same concepts of sexual orientation and gender back then"
what it means:
ideas about platonic affection were much broader and more permissive, gender was in some ways both more fluid (because it was strongly tied to presentation, so if one looked like a duck and quacked like a duck...) and more restrictive (because genders besides male and female? wat?), sexual orientation was in many people's minds almost inextricably linked to gender/gender presentation, and while the concept of homosexuality definitely existed and people knew about it as something distinct from platonic friendship, it was considered a practice as opposed to an identity
what it doesn't mean:
LGBT people didn't exist before the 20th century

eyelids fluttered open at the sound of birds chirping in the cold Toronto air.
Turning to his side, he spotted his beautiful wife Y/N laying there, sound
he cooed, kissing all over her face.
groaned, squeezing her eyes shut. Shawn chuckled admiring her face. Let’s just
say she was tired because they didn’t only sleep last night, Shawn smirked at
the thought. He turned over to glance at his alarm clock to see that it was
perfect time for him to wake up the kids.
and Y/N took turns taking Y/D/N and Y/S/N to school, and Shawn definitely had
the history of getting them late. Who could blame him, he loved his kids so
much he didn’t always want to let them go.
so with one last kiss to Y/N’s forehead, Shawn hopped out of bed and put his
slippers on. Crossing the hallway, he visited a bright purple room first.
the hundreds of stuffed animals on the ground, he walked up to his daughter’s
tiny bed, where she was snoring softly.
smiled at her little face, and tucked a strand behind her ear just like he does
stirred, waking up.
darling.” Shawn chuckled at her.
don’t want to go to school.” She muttered.
sweetheart, you know you have to.”
don’t want to.”
is there something bothering you?” Shawn asked.
you only call mommy love!”
I can use it for you sometimes too. Here, let’s sit you up.”
sat on her bed and placed Y/D/N on his lap. She rested her head on his chest as
Shawn took her hand in his.
I have my oral presentation today.” She told her dad.
I’m guessing you’re nervous?”
lemme tell you something darling, I know how you feel.”
do you deal with nerves before you perform?”
I take deep deep breathes. You know, in and out, in and out slowly… And then, I
ease my mind. I think of things I’m thankful for, people I’m thankful of having
in my life.”
think about mommy?”
Oh yeah, boy did I think about your mommy when I was on tour.”
you miss her daddy?”
badly, kitten, so badly.”
looked through the hallway back at his bedroom.
how about some pancakes to cheer you up eh?”
put her down for her so she can get dressed, and walked across to his son’s
the way, a furry little grey dog ran into him.
boy! How you doin, had a good sleep?” He said, scratching his neck and patting
him on the head. “Go find Y/N, she’ll want to cuddle with ya.”
he ran off to their bedroom.
his watch for the time, Shawn mentally swore. The little talk with Y/D/N took a
little longer than expected, and now if they didn’t hurry up they would be
buddy, what’s up?” Shawn called out to his son.
was bent over his desk, scribbling away.
did you leave your homework last minute again?”
no of course not dad.”
c’mon buddy let’s go downstairs to have some breakfast.”
picked his 7 year old son up and went down the stairs to a waiting Y/D/N.
took a seat beside Y/D/N at the kitchen table, as Shawn started to get pans
I don’t think we have time for pancakes.”
“What, daddy you promised.” Y/D/N frowned.
do you want to be late or not have pancakes?”
don’t care about being late, you do.” She giggled. “You and mommy have a
contest on who gets us on time the most often.”
you little geniuses know everything.”
Shawn said to the ceiling.
dad, what’s 16+23?”
the pancake mix is in the first cabinet on the left!”
god, Shawn thought.
did I have kids again?” He whispered to himself.
you loved me and wanted to start a family.” Y/N smirked, standing at the bottom
of the staircase. “Need a hand babe?”
PLEASE.” Shawn exhaled with relief.
chuckled, as she walked in the kitchen.
get started on pancakes, and I’ll sort out Y/S/N’s homework.” She said, putting
her hands on Shawn’s waist.
you, you’re the best.” Shawn grinned down at her, starting to kiss her neck and
Y/S/N rolled his eyes.
right, pancakes!” Shawn moved away from Y/N to proceed to the stove, as she
went to sit beside Y/S/N to help him on his math.
bye guys! Have a wonderful day; Y/D/N you’ll do wonderful on your presentation
and Y/S/N, don’t forget about your soccer practice at 4.” Shawn bent down to
hug both his kids before they ran off to the playground.
are they already 7 and 6 years old?” Y/N pondered, laying her head on Shawn’s
freaking clue.” Shawn responded, laying his head on top of hers and putting his
hand on her waist, pulling her towards him.
we should go home; I’m in sweatpants and a cami and I’m freezing.” Y/N shivered,
snuggling up to her husband.
I got an interview in half an hour.”
Shawn isn’t your interview at 9?”
SHAWN I’M LATE FOR A MEETING AT WORK.”
guess I’m not the only one who runs late every once in a while eh?” Shawn chuckled
from behind the counter with a coffee in his hand.
her eyebrows at him as she ran to the closet to grab a pair of heels.
will you zip me up?” She said.
course love.” Shawn stood up to help her. “Hey today, I called Y/D/N love and
she noticed I always call you that haha.”
I gotta run; I’m so late. Bye you dork.” Y/N kissed Shawn on the cheek before
going out the front door to the driveway.
smirked at her from the door.
I’m still winning, you’ve been late three more times now than me!” Y/N called
out from her car.
you!” He called out to her.
back into the house, he smiled. He was so incredibly happy, with his life right
now. He was married to Y/N, the love of his freaking life and every day with
her was just as exciting as when they were first dating. And he had his two
at the clock. 9:01.
He cried out, grabbing his coat and running out the door.
Bitty sat in his study cubical staring at the sheet of paper before him. His excitement bubbled up inside only managing to leak out in the form of a small squeak of joy. He wasn’t sure if it was the chocolate pecan pie he’d left for the history department or the pumpkin sticky buns he’d dropped off for the folks in registration but somehow he had succeeding in getting into HIST376 aka Women, Food, and American Culture. It was a senior history lecture but the moment he had learned about the existence of the class Bitt was bound and determined to get in. His giggle of excitement drew the attention of the cutie in the cubical across from Bitty.
The dark haired young man who was clearly a few years older than the hockey player eyed him for a moment or two with a gaze like ice for a few minutes before returning to the stacks of history books that surrounded up. They had spent all semester sharing glances over the divider between them but never exchanging words. Without another sound, Bitty gathered his stuff now far too excited to continue studying for his finals.
Winter break flew by and before he knew it the first day of spring semester had finally arrived. Bitty wandered into his classroom and skidded to a halt. The cutie from the library was sitting next to an open seat. The blonde’s heart began to race. He’d spent the entire fall semester doodling those piercing blue eyes and that cute smile. He was a little on the heavy side but still handsome. Bitty knew he was tall, oh so tall, with a charming smile and just a little bit of scruff. His red plaid flannel framed his wide shoulders like a dream. He quickly made his way toward the front where the young man was seated but the empty seat was intercepted by a redhead girl from the swim team. He swore in his mind before sinking into an open seat a few rows back.
Despite not sitting next to Blue eyes, Bitty was going to enjoy this class. The professor came in and they quickly got through first day drabble that no one even listens to. Eventually they got to the first lecture… Food and its importance in culture. As class ended Bitty made up his mind to get there early next class to make sure he would sit next to Blue eyes. Pushing up his sweater sleeve his soulmark peeked out. The tight blocky writing danced across his forearm. Oh, the history, definitely. He sighed and pushed his sleeve back down as he hurried to his next class. He tried not to think about his soulmate or what would happen when he finally found them.
Jack had spotted the cute blonde from the library as he came in the classroom. His heart had skipped a beat. Perhaps he’d sit down, perhaps they’d flirt, perhaps he’d have the courage to ask the hockey hottie out, or perhaps that annoying redhead from the swim team, that had been pestering him for a date, would sit down in the empty chair next to him. Jack swore under his breath and did his best to ignore her during the lecture. The short blonde was gone before Jack could even gather his things at the end of class. Once again he swore under his breath and pushed past the annoying girl.
A smile bloomed on Jack’s face as he entered the classroom a few days later. The blonde hockey player was already seated where the ginger annoyance had been the week before. Jack scratched at his right wrist where the familiar messy scrawl danced across the skin. He didn’t think much about his soulmate but he knew they were out there somewhere and it was only a matter of time before he would find them.
“Jack, please just think about it. I really wish you would go with me to…” Jack’s glare was enough to shut the girl up.
“Amy, please stop asking. No.”
He turned his back to her and made his way to the seat, his seat next to the blonde, muttering the entire way there. His backpack hit the floor with a thump as he sank into his seat. Jack’s shoulders slumped and he sighed shaking his head slowly.
“You come here for the food or the history?”
The words rang out in his ears clear as day in a southern drawl. His hands shook slightly as he turned to look at the short hockey player next to him. Eyes like hazelnut gazed back at him with a bright smile lingering below them.
in your history video you said "hopefully this addresses some of the problems in the original" what did you mean by that? genuinely confused here 😂
Hahaha aaaah, I saw the History MV was making the rounds again. 🙈
I don’t remember all my reasons behind why I loathed the official MV so much but it was enough to make me go ‘yeah fuck that’ then sit down for three days and three nights because that absolutely was not the ‘five year reflection’ this fandom deserved.
Honestly it was just so… lazy. It was supposed to be a celebration of 1D’s history yet it turned into something akin to a dreary funeral and I mean… there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL - do you realise how many times EVERYONE in the fandom would’ve watched it if it wasn’t 1) depressing as all heck (I mean that ENDING, precisely in the time everyone was panicking about the 1D split, was such a bitchy and intentional move???), 2) irrelevant (there was zero substance as to what people are actually a fan of this band for) and 3) if they’d actually used footage we hadn’t seen 100 times over for years. For a song aimed AT the fandom the music video sure as heck wasn’t - how many times have we pleaded for any of This Is Us’ 900+ HOURS of footage they withheld, yet instead they give us, what, 6 seconds of new cutaway shots with the rest of the footage simply ripped from the more popular videos on 1D’s YouTube channel?
Access to new footage completely brings this fandom to life - it’s how we THRIVE. But compare the release of the DMD video, where the entire fandom was up and engaged for WEEKS yelling and sharing new gifset after new gifset after new gifset while ruthlessly streaming for the Vevo record, compared to after the History MV dropped and we all just… stood around scratching our heads. Gifmakers were at a loss and hardly anyone wanted to rewatch it because there was more Simon Cowell than actually showcasing the relationships between all of 1D. Selection and omission of footage is SO important and they essentially tried to insinuate that the OT5 connection never existed which, lmao, way to be transparent. I’d almost go so far as to label it as part of the exit sabotage… but I digress.
Look, there are so many qualms that I had with the official MV, some of which were very context-specific to the time/nature of release, but the important thing is that we as a fandom deserved better. Better than lazy. Better than more gaslighting. I couldn’t make something that could contribute to any Vevo records, but I could make something that people could find comfort in and remind them that growing alongside this band and being a part of such a wondrous, influential, huge platform over the last six years is something to be proud of.
