India’s arms show ‘Defexpo’ moves from Delhi to Goa

India’s flagship arms show ‘Defexpo’ will be moved out from the hustle and bustle of New Delhi to the enchanting settings of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s home state, Goa.

The defence ministry has put its stamp of approval to shift the arms show, held every two years, from New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.

Goa is the home state of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar

Goa is already the permanent venue for the India International Film Festival, but the defence show opens up a whole new vista for the sun and sand state better known as a global tourism hub. Till now, all the eight editions of Defexpo, an exhibition of land and naval systems, have been held in the national Capital. The dramatic shift comes in the wake of the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO)’s inability to spare the venue for the exhibition.

The defence exhibition has got a whole new meaning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ pitch making the sector an attractive investment proposition.

Land, Naval and Internal Homeland Systems Exhibition, also known as ‘Defexpo’, is an important meeting ground of representatives of some of the world’s biggest arms companies and the move to shift the venue will allow Goa to make its debut on the global weapons map.

However, the defence ministry also clarified that no decision has been taken to move air show ‘Aero India’ from Bengaluru to Goa.

‘Defexpo’ is expected to be held in South Goa. The arms show next year will coincide with another major naval event scheduled to be held on the eastern coast in Visakhapatnam. The navy is organising an international fleet review that will be see participation of over 100 warships from all across the world.

Holding two major events almost simultaneously will prove to be a major logistical challenge for the defence ministry.
