“Now you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show what you’re made of… well, I hope I’m there, catching some of the light coming off you that day.”

a/n: I wrote this originally thinking it was going to be a oneshot, but then I completely latched onto the idea and decided that it needed and deserved more. It’s all I’ve been able to write lately, and I just today passed 35k words on it, so I’ve decided to start posting it.

Please be understanding about my other mcs not being updated! It’s hard enough struggling to write one while being harassed about two others.

This is dedicated to @swans-and-pirates, my enabler and #1 beta <3

one

There are days that he regrets this.

The decks of the Jolly Roger are covered in salt water, blood, and gunpowder. His men are weary, quiet, and in need of solace on land- hopefully including a good bath for each and every one.

Captain Hook is what he insists upon being called. It helps keep curious sailors away from the flag of the Jolly and it’s as gruesome a name as it is a story. But in truth, he’s just a man seeking justice and when he gets it, he’ll find rest once more.

Killian Jones is who he really is at his heart. Killian Jones- a lost boy. A broken man.

Fic: Her One True Love’s a Sailing Ship Ch 1

Read at AO3

Summary: When Regina’s curse failed, she became a pirate dedicated to harassing Snow’s ships. After a stint stuck in Neverland, she’s back in the business, but ransoming this runaway noblewoman turns out to be more complex than expected.

“Damn it,” Regina hissed under her breath. Firing a warning shot across the bow worked a lot better when you were remotely close to the bow. Then she raised her voice to carry to the crew. “Hard about! We’ll take another pass!”

Zelthana - Chaotic Neutral Half-Elf Swashbuckler (Thief), Age 30

With a slightly condescending giggle, Zelthana questions your motivation in asking for details on her past. She mentions that some things are best left to the imagination, but offers to elaborate on her past and leaves it up to you to decide if her tale is true or not.

Zelthana was the illegitimate child of a rich Calishite merchant and one of his indentured elven servants. Mother and unborn daughter were dismissed from the household to prevent a scandal, and Zelthana grew up a street rat as a consequence. She developed a penchant for stealing, pickpocketing, lockpicking, and general roughhousing simply to survive and provide for her mother.

Eventually, it would come to pass that her estranged father’s business would fall on desperate times, and in a drunken stupor the merchant found the residence of his former servant and struck her in a fit of anger, claiming that Zelthana’s birth was what brought about his ruin. Zelthana came back to her mother’s body, bloody and beaten by a crude club, and swore revenge.

After investigating by asking local residents about entries and exits from her home, she was able to determine the identity of her mother’s assailant. In the dead of night, she drove a knife into her father’s throat and lit his estate aflame before booking passage away from the city of Schamedar on a trade vessel.

The vessel was accosted by buccaneers on the high seas, and without a substantial defense, the vessel surrendered to the attackers. Zelthana saw an opportunity to make use of the talents she had fostered in her poor upbringing, and turned on the trade vessel to join the pirates.

For a number of years Zelthana worked her way up from a lowly deckhand to the captain’s first mate. Her ambition assured that this was still not enough, and after lulling the captain into a false sense of security, she smothered him in his bedchambers one stormy night and framed it as an accident, taking her place as the captain of the pirate ship she would name the Prize Pearl.

Zelthana launched a campaign of terror on the high seas that devastated the sea-bound traders of Calimport. She attracted many fellow raiders to her flag, and even dedicated pirate hunters found it impossible to keep her at bay. It was only when the Emperor of Calimshan himself saw fit to deploy the Imperial navy to subdue the ‘Pirate Queen’ that Zelthana was backed into a corner. She abandoned her subordinate captains and sailed her vessel to the Sword Coast, and even further north to Icewind Dale to escape from the authorities that wished her dead.

Eventually the Prize Pearl made it past the eyes of the Calishite hunters, but the long voyage had taken its toll on the crew of the ship. Just as she had betrayed her former captain, Zelthana too was betrayed. Her lieutenants accosted her one night as she was deep in her cups and threw her overboard, and it was only thanks to a passing fishing vessel that she escaped the unfortunate fate of freezing to death in the cold waters of the dale.

Not content to sit about after her recovery, Zelthana joined the expedition from Easthaven to Kuldahar, hoping to find a way to return to her old life. However, given the party’s seemingly uncanny propensity for discovering lost artifacts of great value, Zelthana decided to stay with the newly formed Company of the Even Hand. It is unclear if she holds any actual loyalty to the group, or if she is planning to leave at first opportunity once she has accrued enough wealth.

________________

Zelthana fills the company’s need for a trap finder and mechanical expert. Years of working the rigging of a ship has given her substantial knowledge over general machinery and simple engineering. Outside of her utility in paving the way in dungeons, she is also a fierce combatant compared to the typical thief, and fights her way through enemy lines using her own personal brand of dirty fighting.

The pirate has given the party little reason to trust her thus far, and has made her intent to gain wealth over the course of their adventure quite clear. Knowledge of her path in life has made Varius and Magnar quite wary of her intentions, a fact that she plays upon to pester them to her own enjoyment. Siri Wintergaze, however, adores the romantic fantasy of a pirate’s life, and (perhaps unwisely) looks up to the pirate. Nythura does not trust Zelthana for a second, but has a measure of respect for her desire to live freely. Surprisingly, Zelthana gets along rather well with the quiet blind ranger Rhys, whom she treats quite differently to the other members of the company. Perhaps it is out of sympathy for his condition, or her relating to the feeling of helplessness that he often feels.

Zelthana is quick witted, sly, sarcastic, and often times aloof. She makes no secret of her loose loyalty to the cause they pursue, and takes the animosity from some of her fellow adventurers in stride. She seems to thrive off of adversity, and doesn’t seem to be truly happy unless she has something to struggle against or someone to hone her razor sharp wit upon.

In battle, Zelthana dual-wields a pair of scimitars, and carries a small crossbow in the event that long-range engagement is required.

As the pirate king, Luffy is the first to go.

If they get him out of the way first, it’s less likely that the other members of the crew will want to escape.

Because by now, the Straw Hat pirates’ dedication to their captain is near legendary. Without him, they have nothing left to live for - they’ve already achieved all their dreams after all.

So Luffy is first on the chopping block, and he faces his death with a smile on his face, because he’s a D. after all. And more than that, because he’s Luffy. He’s become king, so he doesn’t have any regrets.

When they ask him if he has any last words, everyone gathered holds their breath, wondering if he’s going to make a world-changing announcement like Roger had.

But Luffy doesn’t give two shits about his treasure. His precious last words are directed at his crew.

He smiles out at the crowd, not looking at his nakama. Because he wants to remember them as they were before - he wants to remember warm nights camping on Sunny’s deck, kind laughter floating on the breeze, the thrill of fighting alongside those he would trust with his life.

He doesn’t want his last image of them to be as they are now, tortured and starving and dirty, and more than likely crying because they’re going to see the worst possible thing happen.

So he smiles out at the crowd, and says to his crew, “WAIT FOR ME!”

And of course, his audience assumes he’s declaring that he’ll be returning in another life, to reclaim his place as king.

But his crew knows what he means, and they know that no matter what happens after this, their captain will find them again. They’ll be reunited, just like they were after the Sabaody incident - they just need to wait, and have faith in him.

Their reply of “AYE CAPTAIN!” rings clear as a bell throughout the square, and it sends shivers down everyone’s spines.

And then

just like that

the pirate king is

Gone.

Zoro is the next to go.

Because as first mate, it’s his duty to be the first to follow at his captain’s side.

And he holds his head up high and he dies without stains on his honor, every bit of him scarred except his back.

After the two big heads are gone, the marines don’t care what order they kill the rest of the crew.

Brook steps up next, because he’s lived long enough, he’s ready to rest now.

Then is Usopp, their faithful sharpshooter.

And he’s always been a coward, but in this moment, he’s surprised to find he’s not the least bit scared.

Because he’s going to where his captain is, and what’s there to fear in that?

Franky is the next to go.

He’s not too worried

Before they were captured, they’d made arrangements for Sunny - she’s had the funeral she deserves.

Sure she could have lived on for years after them, but she’d have been so miserable without her crew.

They thought it better to send her off first, and join her after.

Jinbe is the next to go, and he keeps his head up high

He may have been a captain in his own right, once upon a time, but Straw Hat Luffy is a man he would never be ashamed to bow his head to.

Now it’s just the girls, Chopper, and Sanji left.

Now common courtesy would dictate that Sanji should have gone after Zoro, but he can’t die just yet.

So Robin volunteers to go next, because she just knows Nami needs a few more moments to prepare herself, and she’s been prepared to die since the day she lost her island. It isn’t too big of a deal for her.

Some people think it cowardly that Sanji hasn’t volunteered to go yet, because of course the girls should have gone last, so they could live as long as possible, right?

But no.

Next is Nami, and she’s made her peace with her death.

She’s so excited to be able to see Bellemere again.

And it hasn’t even been that long, but she misses her captain already.

Now it’s just Chopper, the baby of their crew.

And truth be told, he’s all kinds of terrified.

Almost his entire family is gone, and he would break down right there, but Sanji’s smiling at him, and his presence is reassuring.

So Chopper is the next to die.

And when it happens, it’s so fast he doesn’t feel a thing, and he’s grateful for that.

And now

it’s just Sanji left.

And in that second he feels himself almost crushed by the weight on his shoulders.

The weight of being the only living Straw Hat left.

It’s absolutely terrifying, being all alone after having his beloved crew by his side all this time.

But he’s the Second Mate, after all. And it’s his job to bring up the rear

Now that he’s seen the last of his crewmates off, made sure they’d gone into the next life safely, it’s his turn.

So

The second pirate king has come and gone.

Now what?

The Straw Hat Grand fleet is watching, and they find themselves suddenly aimless without their captain.

Law and the Heart pirates aren’t even trying to pretend they aren’t grieving.

Sabo is catatonic with the loss of his only living brother.

And up on the execution stand, the two young marines who had had to carry out each execution are crying uncontrollably.

They’re vice admirals, and normally, this job wouldn’t have been left to them.

But it had been Luffy’s last request, to have his first friend, the one marine he respected the most, carry out his execution.

And it tore Coby’s heart apart to do it, but he couldn’t very well have refused.

They let themselves grieve for just an hour.

And then they pack their tears away, and break out the booze.

Because that’s just the kind of man Luffy was.

He wouldn’t want them to grieve his death.

He would want them to celebrate his life.

The parties last for weeks afterwards, everyone trading stories of their encounters with the strange crew that was the Straw Hat pirates.

And the world is never the same, after the reign of the second pirate king.

But life goes on, and just because their story ended, doesn’t mean everybody’s did.

The world kept spinning, and history unravelled

and

centuries and centuries down the road

a baby is born, with happy brown eyes and the widest smile, and two older brothers who already adore him more than anything else in this world.

By age 4, he already knows that something is missing in his life, and he needs to find it.

At age 6, he meets the boy that had been his first mate, once upon a time

and the first words he says to him are “I found you!”

One by one, he picks up his crew mates

and at age 16, he’s found them all.

And the Straw Hat pirates are set loose to wreak havoc upon the world once more.

Her toes are practically frozen icicles even under the cover of a few blankets and a thick comforter, and the last thing Emma wants to do is get up, despite the little voice that crackles through the monitor on her nightstand.

“One time my parents and I went to Disneyland early, around opening time, and we wanted to be the first people to ride Pirates of the Caribbean. So we run over to Adventure Land, when we see some guy lying down on the ground. Upon closer inspection, it turns out he was Jack Sparrow. With a few incomprehensible mumbles, he gets up and walks out of view. His dedication to character was flawless and brings me joy, even to this day.”

Winter 2015 Anime Review Part 2: Yona of the Dawn/Akatsuki no Yona Second Half

Yona of the Dawn

Fugitive Princess Yona continues her quest to survive the hardship around her and find her destined companions, the Four Dragons. On the way, she finds out the turmoil her nation is going through and is truly tested in her quest to become a stronger person.

Akatsuki no Yona had an excellent first half last season and was just as excellent, if not better, this season. The character development and world-building of the show continued on at a good pace, with Yona’s development in particular really shining. We see her grow in leaps and bounds in this season  and start to really come into her own. She also continues to struggle with learning about the hardship of her nation she had previously been ignorant to, and her determination to take responsibility increases tenfold. Yona truly decides what she wants to do with her life this season and the path her destiny will take.

One thing I really adore about Yona as a character is that we really see her struggle with terror as she does these new, dangerous things. She’s not automatically and unrealistically hardened to fear. She will be utterly terrified, legs shaking and tears in her eyes, as she does, This makes her determination to do these terrifying things for the sake of other people even more impressive. It’s nice to see characters struggle with realistic fear but push on anyway. Yona’s quest to become stronger feels so real, because we really see how hard it is for her, both physically and emotionally. It makes her victories and incredibly badassery as a result so much sweeter.

Basically, Yona is a fantastic character and the show would be worth it just for her. But the rest of the cast remains really colorful and great too. Yona and her boys continue to be well developed and have a great, fun dynamic than only grows with the addition of new members.
