WednesDIY: "Finishing" Teacups

In The Finisher by David Baldacci, the main character, Vega Jane is a Finisher - her job is to take “unfinished” things like figurines, cups, bowls, etc. and put the final touches on them.

You will sometimes paint, sometimes carve, sometimes mold and sometimes distress objects to make them look older. (p. 15)

We wanted to play Finisher for a day, so we decided to improve some teacups!

What you’ll need:

  • Teacups (we got these from a dollar store)
  • Paint markers (these are oil-based DecoColor markers. You should be able to find these or something like them at almost any craft store!)
  • An oven

Step 1: Wash and dry the outside of the teacup

Step 2: Make your masterpiece! Write or draw your design on the cup

Note: The paint markers are fairly easy to scrub off for a while if you make a mistake!

We chose the C.S. Lewis quote, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

(The “#1 Duelum Champion” is a reference to The Finisher!)

Step 3: Let dry for 24 hours

Step 4: Put them in the oven for 40 minutes

Start with your cup in the COLD oven. Set the oven to 400 degrees, and leave the cup(s) in for 40 minutes. Once the timer goes off, turn the oven off and let the cup cool down with the oven.

Step 5: Make a nice hot cup of tea and curl up with a good book!

The pen packages say that once baked onto the cup, they should be dishwasher safe, but just to be safe, we’d recommend only hand-washing your cup to preserve your beautiful design.

What quotes or designs would you use on your cups? We’d love to see them!
