A Sudden Realization That's Probably Very Obvious to Everyone but Me

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Aunt Petunia says “ You didn’t just loose a mother in Godrick’s Hallow, you know. I lost a sister.” I realized that Aunt Petunia couldn’t help but hate Harry. Not only is he the only living person who has Lilly’s genes, but HE is the reason that Lilly is dead. Even though Lilly died defending the person she loved, she left behind people that love her. No matter how much Petunia hated the fact that her sister was a witch is irrelevant, because they’re sisters. They may bicker and fight, but in the end of the day, they ARE sisters, and they love each other. Lilly was probably Petunia’s best friend growing up and vice-versa. Imagine loosing that, and then having to take of the person who was the reason ultimate reason for her death. You’d be pretty pissed too. Of course Uncle Vernon hates him too, but only by association. Because he loves his wife, and can’t stand to watch her be in pain. I’m not saying the way harry was treated is right, but looking at the big picture, you can’t help but feel bad and empathize with Petunia.

It’s not a case of what you’ll permit, Minerva McGonagall. Your time’s over. It’s us what’s in charge here now, and you’ll back me up or you’ll pay the price.“

And he spat in her face.

Harry pulled the Cloak off himself, raised his wand and said, "You shouldn’t have done that.”

As Amycus spun around, Harry shouted, “Crucio!”

Can we talk about this moment please? Because it is one of my favourite and isn’t talked about enough. Harry just revealed himself on what was supposed to be a secret mission, despite the fact that it could put him and his task in jeopardy. Because of the respect he had for Minerva McGonagall.

But that’s not all. This is the first time Harry has ever managed to cast a Cruciatus Curse properly. All his other attempts had been unsuccessful. Including the time he cast it on Bellatrix Lestrange moments after she’d killed Sirius. Now, I’m not saying that his raw emotions in this scene were stronger than after his godfather’s death, or that emotion is all it takes to cast the curse, but I imagine (especially for the first time) a large part of whether your curse works or not is exactly how much you want to cause your victim unbearable pain.

Let us remember that, at this point, McGonagal is not really under threat. She’s not in any immediate danger; Amycus may have threatened her, but she’s a brilliant witch. We can assume that she could have handled herself. What made Harry snap like this was just the mere act of disrespecting Minerva McGonagall. Harry, who disarms Death Eaters rather than curse them, to the point where “Expelliarmus" becomes known as his signature move. And the fact that Amycus Carrow simply spat at his old Head of House is what causes him to break his "try not to harm anyone too much, or kill where it isn’t necessary” policy.

That is how much Harry respected Professor McGonagall.
