dean ing

Sunrise (12x23 coda - sort of, but not really)

Note: thank you to @amirosebooks for the handprint idea. Hope it lives up to your expectations!

And of course thank you @procasdeanating for the great beta-ing ♥

Dean sinks down on his knees besides Cas’ body, looking up, waiting for someone, something to come and undo what just happened. It can’t be. Cas can’t be dead. Finally he lowers his gaze on the beloved face. So still, like he’s sleeping, and Cas so rarely sleeps. Dean’s throat hurts, his chest hurts, he can barely breathe now. He doesn’t know how much time passes, all he knows is that this is too much to bear, and the tears that finally escape him won’t soothe him. He falls on Cas’ chest and heaves through painful sobs, endlessly.

“Cut! And stay in position as much as possible, please! Okay, that was good. We have about fifteen minutes before sunrise, so I’d rather the transition goes smoothly.”

Nobody claps, as would probably be the case if they had filmed such an emotional scene during day time. The on-set crew is reduced to the minimum at this hour, and everyone is exhausted. People are talking low and moving around without paying attention to Misha and Jensen still lying on the ground.

Misha opens his eyes and puts a hand on Jensen’s back. He knows he shouldn’t move too much if he wants to find the exact same position again, but Jensen’s sobs aren’t stopping, and he doesn’t like that. Tears are starting to wet his shirt and they aren’t fake. A tired Jensen shooting an emotional scene at 5 am was probably a bad idea, and Misha would have said so if he’d been asked.

“Shhh, babe, it’s okay,” he whispers. He’s not even sure Jensen’s heard him; he continues weeping against Misha’s chest. Misha tries to take him back to the reality of the situation. “Come on, Jens, you’re going to smudge all your makeup on my wardrobe, and I can’t get up to change.”

Misha keeps running his free hand through Jensen’s hair, and slowly the crying calms down, but Jensen stays in the same position, face hidden against Misha’s chest, as if he is ashamed to lift it and look at Misha. They just lie there, and the cold is starting to seep into their bodies from the ground when a PA comes to them, carrying a blanket. She doesn’t speak, just makes eye contact with Misha who nods silently, and she spreads the blanket clumsily over them.

It takes several minutes for Jensen to start to relax. Misha watches the sky gradually lightening, and the crew around them beginning to busy themselves again.

“Okay, people, we need to do this one in one shot, you know that! No mistakes allowed, so get ready!”

The PA comes back to take the blanket away, and Jensen finally stirs as if he is coming out of a deep slumber. He lifts his head and catches Misha’s eyes.

“Sorry,” he murmurs, “I… I’m sorry.”

Misha can’t answer as someone comes up to reapply their makeup. The sky is starting to show a deep pink shade behind the mountains; in a minute, everyone except them draws back behind the camera line, and they hear a clap and a loud “Action!”

The door of the small wooden house opens but Dean doesn’t move from where he’s slumped over Cas’ chest. A scrawny teenager, in a much too big flannel shirt that reaches his skinny knees, comes out of the house. His eyes glow gold and he’s smiling, a weird ecstatic smile. He goes down the few front steps, walking straight to where Cas lies. Behind him, Sam hesitates on the threshold, as if knowing he can’t change the boy’s actions in any way.

The boy stops next to Cas, and Dean finally looks up when he hears him say, in a clear, high-pitched voice: “Castiel.” It’s not a question, not a plea, more like an affirmation, a simple statement.

The sky has taken a bright hue of pink and gold, and exactly as the first ray of sun shines from behind the mountain across the lake, a blinding beam of light springs out from the Nephilim’s eyes to Castiel’s heart, right where the angel blade stabbed him. Cas’ body seizes as the dazzling light spreads through it, and Dean falls back on his ass, his eyes squeezed shut. He’s still numb from the shock of what happened in the last couple of hours and when a searing pain burns his shoulder, he doesn’t react except for a full-body flinch - and then the pain is gone, just like that, and the light too.

When Dean opens his eyes, blue ones are staring back at him. His left shoulder throbs with his heartbeat, but he doesn’t care about it right now, doesn’t even want to glance at it for a second, because Cas is looking at him. With eyes full of life. And he’s breathing, and saying the one thing that Dean wasn’t expecting to hear ever again, “Dean”, in his unmistakable deep baritone.

“Cas… is that you? Really you?”

“Yes. You are hurt. Let me…” and he lifts his hand towards Dean’s shoulder. This time, Dean looks down left, and he gasps. His shirt sleeve is burnt and there, on his shoulder, angry-red and swollen, is the same handprint he wore nearly ten years ago when he rose from his grave. Castiel’s handprint.

“No, don’t,” he says as he stops Cas’ gesture. “I want to keep it. I want to keep you.” He’s dizzy and he doesn’t really know what he’s doing, but it doesn’t matter, because all that matters is Cas, not why he’s alive or how. He flings himself at Cas, and clings to him. He doesn’t want to ever let go.

“Cut! Awesome, you did it, guys!”

This time, the whole crew cheers. They all knew that they had to do it in one take, while the sun was rising; there was no room for errors, and it’s done. It worked, and now everyone just wants one thing: going to bed.

“Y’all have twelve hours to rest, and we’ll start again this evening for a few hours only, so please come back well rested!”

Jensen takes several minutes to loosen his grip on Misha’s coat and let him draw back. They stare at each other, dazed and exhausted. Finally, Misha grabs Jensen’s arm and pulls him to his feet.

“Come on, cowboy, let’s get you to bed. I’m sure you can at least walk to the car.”

“Mish… I’m sorry.”

“Shut up,” Misha offers, his tone softer than the words themselves. They’re approaching the car now, not having bothered with anything else, even saying goodnight (or day) to anyone, or removing their makeup.

“Can I… Please come and stay at my place,” and Jensen’s voice isn’t pleading, but strained and thin, and Misha knows he won’t deny him - and himself, if he’s being honest - the comfort. There’s no point in pretending he doesn’t need it too.

“Of course, assbutt.” The reference makes Jensen smile, at least. Misha opens the car door and they both slide on the back seat, squeezing close together, touching from shoulder to thigh. Jensen leans a bit stronger against Misha’s side until Misha, with a sigh, lifts his arm to allow Jensen to snuggle up to him.

While they ride in silence, the sun keeps rising.

(in this ficlet, Jensen needs to be forgiven by Misha for something, but I don’t know what. Feel free to imagine!)

Why the SPN mixtape scene from 12x19 is screenwriting gold, and should be taught to the next generations of screenwriters everywhere - analysis

20 seconds. Two lines of dialogue, three gestures, a couple more camera angles. Episode 19, season 12 of a genre TV show “Supernatural”. A single strike of screenwriting and cinematic genius. The mixtape scene.

Robert Berens and Meredith Glynn, I bow before you.

This scene should be used as an example for future screenwriters how you can put maximum of meaning into minimal time and dialogue. Should be analyzed and taught at universities everywhere, how to achieve the most using the least. How to write for TV, where you only have less than an hour to built something spectacular.

Let’s just peel off all the layers of these 20 seconds of footage and these 13 words. 13 WORDS.

(Cas knocks, Dean doesn’t say anything. Cas opens the door, apologizes for disturbing Dean in his room, and then takes a cassette tape out of his left inside coat pocket, and puts it on the desk, while tapping the label on it that says “Deans (sic!) top 13 Zepp traxx”.)

Cas: Um, I just wanted to return this.

Dean: It’s a gift. You keep those.

13 tracks. 13 words. The future. So number thirteen is important for the future. I mean, are you trying to tell us something here, writers?

(Dean takes the tape, oustreches his arm, and gives it back to Cas. We see Cas’ hand grabbing the tape, and taking it back.)

That tiny scene is ENORMOUS from the perspective of the narrative and the characterization. Let’s see what we can get out of it. (Prepare yourself: it’s gonna be long. Damn, how much meta can you write based on 20 seconds of television and two lines of dialogue?) (Hint: A lot.)

Throughout the series we've seen Dean interact with his fair share of kids/early teens and he was always amazing with them. Do you think he feels more like a big brother or like a parent towards them? (I mean apart from Ben, who I'm still pissed wasn't actually Dean's, though I understand.) Most of the time the age difference would make him a young dad (around 15-20 if I'm not mistaken) but not impossibly young. Feel free to start a discussion if you like and thanks :)

Yeah, well Dean’s experience with parenting began when he was 4, so being a “young dad” is pretty much par for the course for him.

Though a lot of the kids he has “parented” on the show are pretty much in the same age range as Ben was. Krissy was what, 15 or 16 when he met her and he was 34 or 35. Claire is about the same age, maybe a year younger. And Alex is even a year younger than her, though Dean hasn’t had as much chance to “parent” her since he met her in the depths of his MoC days…

It’s almost like they’re just at that weird age gap where he could be either a parent or just a much older brother. I think that’s why his relationship with Charlie has a distinctly different feel, because he really does feel purely “brotherly” toward her.

He never really goes full-on parent with anyone though. He walks this weird line that I can sort of relate to. We hosted an exchange student for a year once. He was 18 when he moved in with us, and I was about 28. I jokingly referred to him as “the Swedish teenage son I never had.” And technically I was responsible for him as a guardian, but hell if I actually treated him like my child. it was an interesting dynamic, but it’s pretty much exactly how Dean relates to teenagers on the show.

I think it’s also partly because with teenagers Dean gets to let loose and act a little more like a teenager himself. He never got to be a kid, so he indulges in more child-like things with relish when he has the excuse of a younger person to relate to. Like mini golfing with Claire.

Anyone have anything to add?

hello! i hope this isnt an annoying ask but i have trouble interpreting tone/language use and was wondering if you could explain why dean says "good" after mary says "I watch him die everynight" thank you very much! :)

Hi :)

I think the general idea is that Dean doesn’t so much think it is “good” that Mary relives this horrific episode but that it is what she deserves for what she did.

This post kinda goes off topic but not really, because I think a lot of this season for Dean is him dealing with changing what he believes he deserves and this ties into what others deserve, so it is a very relevant point and thank you for bringing it up at this point in the season!

What is interesting is, again, how Dean is portrayed as the one angry on an emotional, personal level:

Whereas Sam is portrayed as the “bigger picture” brother by mentioning the fact that Wally died (which is obviously worse than Cas nearly dying) and asking the details of the betrayal:

I mean, yeah, I think Dean is angry and upset because the person he loves so much nearly died, but it is also part of their make up and characterisation that this is the way the two brothers are often portrayed so it is very important to the overall season arc as well and we need to remember this for the coming episodes, especially with Dean clearly being so emotional and angry (I think the term was furious on the synopsis) for next episode…

In terms of Mary, yes, Dean is extremely upset with her actions and it isn’t just her working with the BMOL, clearly, it is EVERYTHING.

Dean projects and here he is projecting all the BS that he has been burying since Mary left in 12x03, but what is really interesting is that he doesn’t hide behind this one part of the conversation as he might have done in the past, but he is honest about the fact that he is upset and hurt that Mary left, for all the things he thinks she did that hurt them.

And for me this is extremely important as it clearly shows how Dean not only is letting down his facade and being more honest (which is clearly a huge part of his season arc on an emotional level) but also that he is now coming around to the idea that he himself deserves more from Mary.

Hence, I come around to the first point, that here he believes Mary deserves to feel the pain and guilt of what happened to Wally.

So, this in turn makes us think about what he thinks he deserves (and Sam of course too, because Mary abandoned them both, but lets focus on Dean here as he is the one talking and he is the one talking about all the crap he believes Mary has put them through).

For quite a few seasons now we have seen a change in Dean and how he views himself. He no longer really believes that he doesn’t “deserve to be saved”. He has started to believe in himself and we can see from this conversation that he believes he deserves at least some good things.

Someone has made him believe that he deserves to be saved and to have good things.

I wonder who that might be?

OK, but seriously. It’s not just Cas of course, there is Sam and of course the importance Chuck gives him and his life experiences, but it is clearly in large part Cas, especially when you look at the details of when and due to what he starts to believe more in his own self worth.

And there is a reason that Mary is heavily mirrored with Cas in this season and I believe we will see more of this in the coming episodes, especially knowing that there is a confrontation coming between Dean and Mary (helped by the fact I am headcanon-ing that Dean will find and lose Cas 12x19 and Dean clearly doesn’t react well to losing Cas).

Because so far this season Dean has had his emotions bubbling beneath the surface, building and building, and they’re about to explode…

So yeah, Dean in his anger believes Mary deserves to suffer because of what she did to Wally. She is not only their mother but she is also a hunter and Dean was hoping for so much more from her. She has a long way to go to redeem herself, but if it does happen, we know that Dean can forgive, we have seen him do it over and over again with Sam and Cas, so if she is willing, he will let her :)

I think the really important part of this scene is showing us how Dean now deals with this kind of pain and anger, how in the past he might have projected, repressed and misdirected the anger into something else or just focused on the one thing at hand but now he is much more open and honest and explains that it is not just about this but all the rest of the stuff he is suffering from because of Mary.

I hope and expect this will become even more apparent in the coming episodes…

Season 1: “I don’t know man, Demons? This isn’t our normal gig, I mean, this is big.”

Season 9: *Having lunch and arguing with the King of Hell*

Season 11: *Playing Doctor Phil for God and Lucifer*

that-winchester-woman  asked:

Seems like your "break up" theory was right on point with How betrayed Dean must be feeling at this point.

Yep, I don’t know if you just saw my last post but I’m feeling that there is a choice now from Dabb as to whether to continue on the ‘standard’ SPN trajectory and have a ‘rule of 3′ s6 + s8 + now Cas is brainwashed / makes bad decisions trope with Dean crypt scene - ing him back etc etc or if he is going to go a new, different way….

The break up / separation was key to this episode and the end of the season so I’m glad it did go ahead, and in the way I expected with it being more of a ‘choice’ thing at this point.

The fact that Destiel was so core to this episode, which is all about the future and the future arcs of the characters, is super exciting to me :)

I mean, Dean is feeling betrayed, but also… he was betrayed all episode but he STILL defended Cas to Sam, he acknowledged what Cas was doing and why he was doing it. I think he’s finally figured out that Cas is doing so much of this FOR HIM, with the best intentions, again, not EVERYTHING is about Dean, but so much is and the rest is all for the RIGHT reasons.

I mean the bedroom scene was literally them both revealing their feelings in the best way that they could and each acknowledging this up to a point. Cas shows his through trying to protect Dean at all costs and putting himself in the line of fire, always leaving Dean in order to help him. Dean shows his through trying to repressedly making half gestures and saying half truths, because he can’t quite give it all yet and basically asking Cas to stay.

It was fantastically written to show that they basically now UNDERSTAND each other’s views and feelings towards the other, even if they’re not 100%, they are WAY closer than the… whatever, like 20% they were at before?!

Omg the First Hand-Adorableness fic was so cute and amazing! I can so image Dean being all pouty after and saying to himself "I'm not adorable. I'm a badass hunter. I'm Dean ****ing Winchester." lol -(new anon) trash anon

Thank you! I’m glad you liked it. Dean is obviously not adorable, he’s leather jackets and killing things, thank you very much. 😂 Also yay, new anon!

I don’t know man. What can I say? You’ve been chosen. And it sucks. Believe me. There’s no use asking, “why me?” ‘Cause the angels - they don’t care. I think maybe they just don’t have the equipment to care. Seems like when they try, it just…breaks them apart.

There are many who think that season nine erased a great deal of character growth and development, especially in terms of Dean and his descent into his own darkness.

In season seven, Dean struggled with himself and his emotions in a very similar way. He struggled with Castiel’s death, with his return, and with the onslaught of anger and complicated grief associated with it. He struggled to understand why the people he cares about the most the world die or choose to leave him, no matter how hard he tries to keep them.

When Dean made this speech to Kevin, he was speaking his own grief. He was speaking from a place in his heart that would never be healed after Castiel’s betrayal. Dean was speaking from a place where it was easier to believe that angels do not have the capacity to care and to love because that thought is easier to cope with than the alternative - Castiel doesn’t feel towards Dean the way that Dean feels toward him.

Hours before his death, Castiel made the choice to lose everything - Heaven, his crusade, his redemption - in order to save Dean. Castiel chose Dean because he cares, because he loves. Actions spoke louder than words ever could in that moment.

In that moment, Dean finally understood, with one hundred percent certainty, exactly what Castiel meant when he said, “And I did it - all of it - for you.”

Hours before his death, Dean finally understood that he was enough. He was enough to move an Angel of Lord. He was enough to change one man.

Dean walked toward death knowing and understanding his worth, even if only to one angel - one man. That is growth.

“Guys? I’m home!”

Castiel is completely convinced this is a hallucination. Firstly, because there is no possible way Dean as magically come back to life (Castiel knows, Castiel has mourned him), but even if that were to happen, Mary Winchester accompanying him is a total impossibility. Not that Cas was aware that over-worked angels could indeed be exhausted enough to have hallucinations, but it’s apparently a thing that happens, because he’s managed to do it:

Dean and Mary Winchester have just entered the Bunker.

And because this is a hallucination, Castiel doesn’t have to censor himself.

The angel scrambles up from the table and takes the stairs two-by-two, vision blurring as he all but crushes Dean in a hug. After half a second, he pulls back only to kiss him within an inch of his life; and Dean’s mouth is soft and yielding and he makes the most sweetly surprised noise and he’s tensed, as if totally caught off guard but this is an illusion so he’ll relax soon but—

Dean never relaxes.

This is real.

Cas immediately pulls away, his eyes wide as he holds his best friend at an arms length. Dean is blushing profusely, arms swinging at his side as he gives a weak grin. “Uh, hey Cas.”

Castiel doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Dean. I thought you were—” He swallows thickly and smoothes down his clothes in an attempt to collect himself. “I’m sorry. Um.”

But instead of yelling, instead of pushing him away and kicking him out, Dean Winchester does something… od: he shrugs and rubs the back of his neck, clearing his own throat as if he’s terribly embarrassed. As if he has something to be embarrassed about. He manages to turn an even deeper shade of red. “Nah, that’s, ah… s’okay. Uh.” A beat. He looks over to the side. “Mom! Mom, this is my… Cas. My Cas.” He speaks to his shoes as he makes introductions. “Cas, mom. Cas is an angel.”

Mary’s brows almost hit her hairline at the same time as she extends her hand. “…Nice to meet you.”

Cas shakes it perhaps a tad too enthusiastically. “You, too.”

She eyes him a bit suspiciously and Castiel gives what he hopes is a reassuring smile. He must miss his mark because Dean grins widely. “So, uh, surprise, bitch, thought you’d seen the last of me.”

Despite his inner turmoil, Cas finds himself grinning just as widely. “Now is not the time to be meme-ing, Dean.”

“Meme-ing?” Mary interjects.

“The internet,” Dean says. “I’ll explain it to you later. Hey, Cas, where’s Sam? He’s gonna freak—Cas?”

Castiel feels completely and utterly sick. “He.” Blue eyes are side and sympathetic. “Dean I tried ,but there was a sigil—”

“What the fuck happened, Cas?” Low. Serious. Scared. Cas doesn’t want to tell him (take care of him). He wishes that once, just once, the Winchesters lives weren’t so unfair. He wishes that, just once, he didn’t break everything he touched—that just once, things would be fine and Dean would be proud of him.

But life isn’t fair, and if Dean hates him for this, so be it:

“Sam’s been kidnapped.”
