cool photo from an inquiry via DC Showspace! i know nothing about this but my friend Tony informed me two dudes named Gabe Banner and Eric Doeringer put this comp out. Anyone know more?
im trying to find answers for this low-budget cassette compilation i found of dc punk bands at an annapolis thrift store. it’s a benefit for the ZACCHAEUS FREE CLINIC which was a solution for people who couldn’t afford health insurance. for being someone that draws a lot of influence from early dc punk, it’s embarrassing to say that i don’t recognize more than half of these bands, but the liner notes mentions that some of these bands had “never even headlined a show.” there is a surprising amount of reggae influence in some of these bands, and it’s crazy how fresh the rites of spring influence was in some of this music. really great stuff for the most part. it was also really nice to come to realize how many of these bands had female singers, especially considering the fact that this tape was likely produced in the early 90s.
the bands on this tape are: RISE, DESIDERATA, I-SPY, BLIND AMBITION, THE BAND, NOW I FLAIL, FOUR WALLS FALLING, SNAPDRAGON, BLOODY NOODLES, BALANCE, DEVICE, THE CHRIS BALD 96, WORLDS COLLIDE, THE KINGPINS, TSUNAMI, REPERCUSSION, YGGDRASIL and FOOD.
it was released by MORE THAN SOUND records, which was located at 9925 wickens ave, bethesda MD 20814. it was their first release. the tape was dedicated to noah, the bassist of RISE who is mentioned to have passed in 1991. it’s nuts how little there is about MTS to be found via google. i grew up in the 80s and 90s, but i quickly forgot how things used to operate as the age of the internet has grown.
anyone have anything interesting to share about this?
