dc appearances

I can’t believe that a video game and a lego movie are the only two mainstream comic book adaptations that have treated barbara gordon with respect and allowed her to be her own character instead of using her as a plot device to contribute to bruce’s man pain or passing her around in a series of increasingly out-of-character romances with literally every single male batfam member.

a family comedy about lego characters is better with how it handles its female characters than 99.99% of “serious” superhero movies.

Batgirl: Futures End

“You rely too much on your weapons.”

“You haven’t lived until you’ve covered two sketchy dudes in goop, Cass. I know what I said, okay? Sheesh.”

This – I live for this. My two favorite friends from comics, together, bantering – and they sound like the old friends who have known each other for years, just like I loved them in the old continuity. It’s such a funny moment but also such an adoring moment.

It’s great.

Batman: Li’l Gotham #1

“There’s no telling who’s real and who’s not. For all I know, most of these costumed Jokers are the real deal.”

So. For people who might not have been around during this whole debacle, this may be one of the most controversial DC comic pages of all time.

Why is it controversial? How can a page full of cameos be controversial? Doesn’t DC love doing this stuff?

Well, my dear readers, this was at a time where Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown were quoted as being “toxic” to DC Editors because their large fan bases were vocally protesting their treatment (or lack thereof) in the then-current administration. And Li’l Gotham – on a page which manages to have multiple Batfamily references from the Ventriloquist to Red Hood and outside-continuity references like Artemis of Young Justice and Jay Garrick the Pre-Crisis Flash – DARED to have Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown cameo in a little off center of the splashpage behind Donner movies Lex Luthor and classic Darkseid.

In the original version, the Steph cosplayer had blonde hair, making her unique Batgirl costume homage all the more obvious, whereas Cass is dressed in an unofficial outfit that her fans would recognize as a style and colors she wears in Nguyen’s unofficial art for her.

This caused such an uproar with the angry editors at DC that they demanded that they change the hair of the Steph cameo so that it would be less of a cameo.

I’m not kidding.

If you poke around a bit you can find lots of editorials and posts chronicling the bizarreness that is the treatment of Cass and Steph between 2011 and 2014, but for Steph there’s a silver lining so far as Li’l Gotham’s concerned – by the last issue, she got a full-on cameo and mention, whereas Cass got one background cameo in another issue with Steph but did not get a mention in the Batfamily history spiel that was given in the last issue that included Steph.

I will leave that rant for another time.

aithreachas  asked:

Where would one start if I wanted to read about Midnighter and Apollo? I've been seeing you on my dash and I'm just ' sign me up for this I need to read' but I don't?? know where to start??

Bless you, my friend! Bless you for seeking the truth and wisdom that is Midnighter and Apollo! May your crops flourish, may your skin clear, may the gay rainbow bring joy and prosperity upon you!

So here’s the thing. There are technically two different versions of Apollo and Midnighter that exist in the world. This is because both characters were originally created by Ellis and Hitch in 1999 for the Wildstorm Universe, as members of Stormwatch (and then The Authority). At the time, the Wildstorm Universe was arguably a much edgier place to be than DC, where people died in gruesome and explicit ways…. and then they stayed dead. Kind of.

In Wildstorm, Apollo and Midnighter begin and end as a team. They are, for most of their existence in the storyline, a couple. They get married, adopt a child, and interact as a couple who have a real relationship despite their superhuman lifestyle. Almost every story arc ever told in the Wildstorm Era is beautiful and worth reading, and I will link them to you below.

Now. Fast Forward to 2010, when Wildstorm was considered officiallly purchased/acquired by DC Comics and all their current universe runs had finally concluded. DC now owns The Authority, Apollo, and the Midnighter. So what do they do? Completely reboot the fucking universe, of course. And not only that, they retconn Apollo and Midnighters’s entire backstory of being experimental soldiers in Henry Bendix’s covert op Stormwatch Team. Instead, they’d been abducted by aliens or some shit. Whatever. I’ve made my opinion of the New52 Reboot of Apollo very clear in other posts.

So DC Universe Apollo and Midnighter end up being entirely different, both as people and how they come together as a couple. I won’t recommend much of the early New52 run for reading material, but I Do highly recommend the standalone Midnighter series (both vol 1 and 2), eventhough Apollo’s appearances are sparing. They’re still great reads, and they weill set you up for appreciating the new series that released only last month, Midnighter and Apollo!

So let me point you in the right direction to learn a bit about both Past and Present Apollo and Midnighter:

Wildstorm Titles

  • Stormwatch, vol 2 : #4 - #9 (A Finer World)
Here lies the first appearance of Apollo and Midnighter in Wildstorm. Reading this is not necessary to understanding who they are, but it gets into their backstory pretty well and introduces a lot of big players in the Stormwatch world.
  • The Authority, vol 2
Volume 2 continues where Volume 1 left off, with more adventures and more villains. This volume is where we see Apollo and Midnighter’s married life, the ongoing growth of Jenny as their adopted daughter, and how they work our their personal issues. Story Arc TPBs include:
    - The Authority: Harsh Realities
    - The Authority: Fractured Worlds

  • Wildstorm Winter special 2005
This hard-to-find Winter Special from 2006 features a couple of stories in it, but one in particular about Apollo and Midnighter alone. It also features their parallel universe opposites: Pluto and Daylighter.
  • The Authority: Revolution
Technically considered Volume 3 of the series, Revolution was written during a time of obvious and inevitable decline for Wildstorm. The stories within are managed first by Morrison, and then by a series of random writers all struggling to find some magic formula to bring readers back to the book. . Revolution features the one and only “break up” between Apollo and Midnighter in the Wildstorm Universe. And it sort of signals the beginning of the end for this team.
    - Book One
    - Book Two
  • The Authority: The Lost Year
This is technically Volume 4 of The Authority Series, but the intention of a full series story arc failed after about four issues, and again the book began to change hands between writers and artists at an alarming rate. This is essentially the end of The Authority in Wildstorm, as is acknowledged in the book itself. The fun thing about this book is that they jump across multiple universes and meet several versions of themselves.

Wildstorm / DC Titles

These books took place during the transition period of DC taking over Wildstorm. Essentially, the version of Apollo and Midnighter found in these books is still the Wildstorm Version, but briefly cohabitates with pre New52 versions of DC characters.

  • DC/Wildstorm : Dreamwar
A Crossover Event in which someones dreams bring both universes together. It goes about as poorly as you’d expect. On the upside, Apollo kills Joker?
  • Grifter/Midnighter
A mini-series featuring mostly the Wildstorm version of Midnighter, but is a great set up for his solo-series that follows right after.

  • Midnighter, vol 1
Excellent standalone title for Midnighter, still technically taking place in the Wildstorm universe but operating as part of the shift into DC tone and style.

  • The Authority: World’s End
The fifth and final volume of The Authority before everything is retconned into DC’s New52. Apollo and Midnighter are only in about half of this volume, but their story is brilliant and heartbreaking and I love it.

DC Titles

The books below are the only things I actually liked from what became of Stormwatch and the Authority under the New52′s influence. You are welcome to read Stormwatch Vol 2 to learn how this new version of Apollo and Midnighter came to be in a relationship, but you may find it underwhelming after the brilliance of Wildstorm’s Stormwatch and Authority series. Despite that, the present day representation of Midnighter and Apollo are definitely worth reading in the following:

  • I, Vampire #12
A brief appearance of Apollo, Midnighter, and Jack. It’s an incidental moment, but it’s cute because they’re ‘not quite dating.’

  • Grayson, vol 1 : #1 - #18
Midnighter makes various Cameos in this series, and it’s pretty brilliant.

  • Midnighter, vol 2
The critically acclaimed standalone series by Steve Orlando, featuring mostly Midnighter on his own. This is where I began to truly appreciate the DC version of both Midnighter and Apollo, and this book is the whole reason the characters are being written about today.

  • Midnighter and Apollo
The latest in our heroes story! Issue #1 only came out last month, and already this book (also written by Steve Orlando) is turning out to be an amazing piece of the Apollo/Midnighter story!

This is probably way more information than you really wanted, but I hope you can use it as a starting point for learning more about my two favorite characters in the world. And remember, if you have any questions, you are always welcome in my inbox!!

You didn’t chase after Steve, even though you know you should have. Its been about a week since he told you he loves you , and hes said less than 10 words to you since.  You’ve fought yourself everyday since, going back and forth on whether you should just corner him and tell him you feel the same; but you cant seem to bring yourself to do it . Whatever enchancement you apparently have, still hasn’t shown itself. Every day brings a new wave of anxiety , and slight excitement though. You’re worried it will be something dangerous, but on the otherhand, it could be cool and useful to help others.  You just wish it would surface already .

You’re sitting on the couch , sitting between her and her brother ,as you guys watch Supernatural . Suddenly , Wandas body tenses, and she leaps off the couch .
“ Pietro take Y/n, and go to the hideout Tony showed you . ” she says , her hands clutching her head.

 What hideout?! “ Wanda whats-”

“ Ross is here, looking for you two.”  Oh fuck .

No one outside of SHIELD and the avengers was to know of TAHITI , or that you and Pietro are back . Ross and he team of kiss asses seem to think that since SHIELD has re appeared since DC, they own them . Which is wrong, SHIELD is independent. They didn’t want to inform the government, the risk of HYDRA having double agents was too high . Somehow , it was leaked though , which isn’t good for you .

Pietro takes you in his arms, speeding away . When you’re set on your feet, you look around to the “hideout” . It was a small room ,computer screens taking up an entire wall , with a couch placed infront of them .

“ FRIDAY , whats going on?” you ask ,

“The Government was made aware of your existence, Ross is here to take the both of you to a government confinement center. ”

“ Do we know how the cat got outta the bag?”

“ Not yet Miss.”
" Cross reference sign ins and facial recognition for the Tower, the SHIELD compound we were kept at before, and government employees. It has to be someone that is cleared to be in all three places if they know about us. “

"Right away Miss Y/n.”

You and Pietro watch the screens as Ross confronts the team , you turn the volume up , which is a big mistake .

“ You found loopholes to legally get the Captain, and his team of fugitives back , its not happening again. I know that they are here, and we aren’t leaving with out them . If you stand in the way , you will be arrested . ” What a prick .

“ No !” you gasp, you go to the door, but Pietro stops you .

“ Draga we cant-”

“ like hell we cant . I’m not letting them do this!”

Ross’s voice makes you turn your attention back to the screens, he is standing infront of Bucky as another officer aggressively slaps cuffs onto him .

“ Ive been waiting a long time to get you Barnes. You’ll be where you belong, confined behind bars in the middle of the ocean . Steve wont be able to save you again. "

” Get me up there now Pietro.“ you snap. He obeys, lifting you and racing you both up to the conference room . When you arrive in the room ,you see Steve being punched, then forced onto his knees infront of Ross.

The same unfamiliar wave goes through your body , but 20 times stronger this time.

” Step away From him Ross. “ you growl . All eyes turn to you now, Ross’s light up when he sees you .

” Nice of you to join us -“

” Y/n, get out of here .“ Steve warns. The officer behind him kicks him in the ribs.  Oh hell no.

” Go get the others back P . “ You say to him , nodding towards where the officers are dragging Bucky .You turn to Ross, your sparks flaring , "You aren’t taking anyone Ross ”

“ You will be leaving with us; both of you .”

“ I don’t think so . ” you say with a smile.  Please work how I need you too, please for the love of everything.

You wiggle your fingers, the sparks following.

“ You don’t have a choice. ”

“ But I do . Get the hell out before I make you .  ” you growl. Ross lets out a dry laugh ,

“It doesn’t work like that-”

You push your hands forward, aiming them at the officers standing besides Steve . The sparks shoot from your hands, going right to them  . Their bodies vibrate from the shock, sending them to the floor with groans.

” I don’t doubt it . But come back at you own risk. “ you say , sending electricity  next to his feet.  You turn back to Steve, watching as he rubs at his wrists.

” Are you oka-“

Steves lips are on yours instantly, slightly startling you . You begin melting into him , your lips moving with his .

Conan and his Kaito-sense

Remember that case from Detective Conan (volume 91) that got famous on Tumblr ?

Well, turns out Conan could always “sense” Kaito Kid from the very beginning of their rivalry, as shown in this case from Volume 16 (when Kid first appeared in DC):

Now that’s consistency !

Batgirl: Futures End

“Girls. I am sorry. This is a poor than you for your courage and valor. But I’m afraid this is a fight I have to make alone. Stephanie, you have the heart of a lion, in every way that matters. You had the strength to resist the darkness where I did not. Tiffany, your day will come. Don’t be afraid of your intelligence. I believe you will outshine us all. Cassandra, you came through Hell and made everyone you met stronger and better. You are the person I most want to be.”

This is another good moment, so emotional and heartfelt, and of course it once again focuses on the relationships that bring most people to read this comic to begin with. It focuses on Barbara and the girls who carry her legacy, the family she has made in this dystopian future. And it’s complete with little nods to characters’ histories like how Steph helped pull Babs out of the dark in “Flood” storyline of her own series, or how Cassandra spent her time as Batgirl with a full facemask but still showed so much emotion and openness.

It’s good stuff.

It’s the kind of stuff I’d like to see an entire issue consist of. But well. It didn’t.

“Smile Dog”  © deviantArt user Snook-8. Accessed at her deviantArt page here

[For my interpretation of the Smile Dog creepypasta, I took additional inspiration from The Rake (who’s doglike in the original story but everyone seems to forget this), the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who and the Nina Chimera from Full Metal Alchemist. Spread the word.]

This malformed creature is simultaneously pathetic and horrifying—a naked canine form twisted into the shape of a man. Its arms and legs end not in paws but with human-like hands tipped with iron claws. Its head is dog-like in shape, but enormous pale eyes peer from behind its long greasy hair, and its mouth is twisted into a disturbingly wide, disturbingly human, smile.

Born of bad dreams and transmitted through images, roucheis are psychic viruses given cruel solidity. Their appearances are so uniquely horrible that they linger in the mind long after the beast itself has left, allowing them access to new psyches to spread their influence along. The suggestions given by a rouchei to its victims in their dreams are generally propagative—forcing their victim to show the rouchei or its image to more victims to spread its net of influence—but it can also, over time, warp people into violent puppets or send them screaming towards suicide. If a rouchei cannot properly influence one of its thralls or if it is feeling playful, it will resort to bloody violence.

Each rouchei has a unique appearance, but all of them appear as a sickly, twisted amalgamation of dog and man. If an image is crafted capable of conveying a rouchei’s haunting appearance but is suitably distinct from any existing rouchei, a new rouchei will be created. Such events are relatively rare, so roucheis prize particularly creative artists as reproductive opportunities. Despite their appearance of ill-health, roucheis are remarkably strong and agile, weaving between opponents in combat to strike at the weakest and tearing them to pieces with long claws and oddly blunt teeth. Roucheis do not need to feed, but enjoy consuming parts of their victims in order to spread fear.
