Betsy DeVos was greeted with a “huge chorus” of boos during her speech at Bethune-Cookman

  • U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is not having a good day.
  • Per CBS News, DeVos encountered a “constant streams of boos and chants” during a commencement address at Bethune-Cookman University, a historically black college in Daytona Beach, Florida.
  • CNN reported that the “huge chorus” of booing began when DeVos received her honorary doctorate from the institution.
  • Many students also stood and turned their backs away from DeVos.
  • The president of the university, Dr. Edison O. Jackson, threatened to cut the proceedings short if the students kept booing the education secretary. According to CNN, Jackson told the student body, “If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you.”
  • Bethune-Cookman students collected more than 50,000 signatures on a petition to stop Betsy DeVos from delivering her address. Read more (5/10/17)

Representative Carrie Meek, 1980

From the Florida Memory, with the following caption: Representative Carrie Meek’s shirt reads: “A women’s place is in the House and the Senate.” Meek wore this prophetic T-shirt in the Florida House chamber in 1980, where she served from 1978 to 1983. In 1982, she became the first African-American woman elected to the Florida Senate. Meek later served in the United States Congress (1992-2001). Prior to her career in politics, she taught at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

‘bleed, honey’ is a track that i started writing during my time in florida back in august, i wrote the chorus first and then pondered and obsessed over the rest of the song for the whole week, meditating on it as we swam in the ocean at ormond beach. this is a little acoustic version that i wanted to share it with you; the full version sounds quite different! lyrics under the jump:
