Women Are Smarter

Back to the music for today’s Daily Dose of the Dead! This is a cover of the Harry Belafonte cover of the Norman Span song Man Smart, Woman Smarter from the Dayton Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio on November 30, 1981. When I first heard this live in Rochester (April 9, 1982) I jotted it down as Women Are Smarter on my list. Even though I came to learn the real name of the song I forever listed it as Women Are Smarter on my tapes and digital versions.

Variations of it have been recorded by many artists including Harry Belafonte, Chubby Checker, Roseanne Cash, Robert Palmer, Dr Victor and Ratdog. It was a staple of the live repertoire of the Grateful Dead from 1981 to 1995 and played a total of 199 times in the period.

This show in Dayton could also boast the only ever Mack the Knife which was pretty much a between songs botch job that Bobby says they will work on for next time… of course there never was a next time! Everything else at this show was pretty vanilla except the real nice Might as Well encore.

Hara Arena is a 5,500-seat multi-purpose arena, in Trotwood, Ohio. The site was originally the family-owned fruit orchard of Harold and Ralph Wampler. The name stems from HA from Harold and RA from Ralph. In 1956, the Wampler Ballroom was erected, which still stands today in the six-building complex. The arena itself opened in 1964. This arena is where Wayne Gretzky played his first professional hockey game!

This is a dose of the truth and the quicker you learn the lesson the better off you’ll be!

“Ever since the world began, women been imitating the ways of men, but listen cause I’ve got a plan. Give it up, just don’t try to understand!”

I couldn’t be more proud of Palmetto Percussion 2015. We were one of 15 PIW groups out of 27 to make finals. Performing in world class finals has been a huge dream of mine and it’s finally come true. I love this organization and can’t wait to be here again next season!
