  • root’s jewish!
  • she wasn’t raised that way (her parents weren’t the religious type) but she spends a lot of time in the local library. she’s seven when she stumbles upon some books about judaism
  • it fascinates her. she can’t read hebrew, and bible belt texas isn’t the easiest place to find a teacher, but she studies everything she can find on the culture and history
  • there’s a small local reform temple, and once she’s exhausted all her resources at the library she starts sneaking into sunday/hebrew school classes. sometimes friday night services, too
  • technically you have to be a member with the temple
  • but membership requires money and supportive parents
  • the teachers notice her immediately, of course
  • they don’t say anything. they let her sit in on lessons for two weeks before she’s gently pulled aside and into a meeting with the head rabbi
  • it’s not conversion, really, since she’s never had a religion to begin with
  • the rabbi is kind. root isn’t used to adults being kind, aside from shaw’s parents. but this woman has a kind smile and a soft voice and doesn’t yell at her like root expects
  • she’s officially enrolled in the religious school program the very next day
  • flash forward a few years, and by the time she’s approaching bat mitzvah age root’s parents are long gone and she’s living with john’s family
  • they’re wonderful supportive angels as always
  • root tells them about the service, but that’s all. doesn’t mention the traditional party. she’s not in the habit of asking them to pay for things, and certainly nothing as lavish as a party in her honor
  • but they love their kid, and they do some research. they know what’s up
  • (john and shaw may put in a word or two as well. who doesn’t love a party?)
  • it’s beach themed!! she’s never been but has always wanted to go
  • there’s fake sand on all the tables. swedish fish scattered on the tables for the kids
  • root gets real hype about swedish fish
  • they aren’t kosher but she’s reform it’s fine
  • all the drink cups have little beach umbrellas. there’s lots of balloons in various shades of blue. everyone gets a lea
  • everyone also gets sent home with a towel with the date embroidered on it
  • “everyone already has tshirts. they dont need //more// tshirts”
  • so maybe root’s a little extra. who doesn’t love towels it’s fine
  • john, carter, fusco, root and shaw take a group pic where they’re all wearing plastic coconut bras
  • (finch is away at school and in the middle of midterms, so he can’t make it. he does send a card though. a chai necklace is traditional, but instead he sends a chain with a silver square root symbol. she never takes it off)
  • there’s a whole lot of line dancing. root LOVES line dances
  • she and john compete for who can go the hardest. anytime the dj starts a line dance they drop whatever they’re doing and race to the dance floor
  • (it’s her night, so john lets her win)
  • (the boy does a mean electric slide though)
  • when it comes to the horah, john and his dad are the ones who lift the chair
  • it’s very cute
  • root looks so happy. john’s mom cries
  • relatable
  • shaw asks her for a slow dance at the end of the night, when the party’s winding down and people are starting to leave
  • root rests her head on shaw’s shoulder
  • john sneaks a few pics. he slips them into the card he gives root the next day, simply signed “l’chaim xx”
