why do you love dawn? i wish i liked her but i can't seem to and i want to but gah please give me a reason to love her too
She’s just… perfect??? Like literally??
First she’s like this super cool teenager who gets on her sister’s nerves but still has her back no matter what. Like when she told Joyce the disinfectant was for her so she wouldn’t worry about Buffy being hurt in Fool For Love. And it doesn’t matter how often they argue for nothing, because they’re sisters and Buffy is her hero. So she stands by her.
And at some point this little girl, who’s always been overprotected by her family, discovers that she’s not even real and all her memories were constructed. She freaks out like any other person would, but gets over it and deals with it so quickly?? She doesn’t want people to treat her differently. And she keeps going with her life, that’s the first sign of all the strenght she has in her.
But that’s not everything, then she learns that she can be used to bring forth the end of the world??? And she struggles with what it means about her and considers that she might be evil, because she can’t be good. She’s really just selfless and cares for people and the world to such a level that she’s ready to sacrifice herself in the end to make sure it’s safe. Because she wants to do what’s right.
So this girl, who used to be normal (or as normal as being the slayer’s sister would allow her) learns that she’s not real, that she can be used for evil THEN loses basically every member of her family and all the people closest to her in order, her dad leaves, riley leaves, her mother and sister die, then in season six a lot of things keep falling apart but she keeps being strong? and comprehensive? and besides the fact that she’s unhappy to be literally avoided and left aside by everyone she cares about, she’ll never say anything or complain because she knows they have their own problems to deal with. And that would hurt anybody, but Dawn isn’t just anybody and this is a lot for her to be left aside when she’s always been the center of the attention. There’s nothing wrong with wanting people to see you and care for you.
Two things I love about her is she’s brave and curious. She wants to be a part of the gang and won’t just stand by. She seeks knowledge, but NOT for power or even any selfish reason. She learns how to fight and read ancient languages so she would be able to help and protect herself and the people she loves. She always stays in the background and helps people become better and stronger themselves? She’s the one who stopped Buffy from jumping a second time off the tower and tried to make her love life again. She could have stepped out of the shadows when everyone thought she was the potential but gave it up instantly to Amanda because she knew the power wasn’t hers and encouraged her forward.
So after all the loss and pain she’s been through, she barely complains and moves forward and does all those amazing things like exorcisms and slaying and idk I’m just rambling now but to me she’s perfect.
I agree that Dawn doesn't deserve all the hate she gets. Michelle's screaming is annoying as hell though, and I don't think anyone can deny that. I personally think Dawn has the best character development out of any btvs character. I hated her in the first few episodes she was in. Not because of the character but the screaming. That could be why she gets so much hate.. Idk..
I don’t know, I think if you scream because you’re upset, it’s not really annoying but more like a cry for help?
Anyway, I too believe, she does have the best character development. Well, she did grow up. But she has matured a lot and proven herself to be a key member of the scoobies, Pun Unintended. Just think of all the studies she’s done, she learned to read ancient languages, all about demons! And wow, she’s so selfless and strong, she won’t wallow in self-pity anymore but she’ll pass on the torch, help the potentials, help one in particular to embrace her calling and I JUST LOVE DAWN SO MUCH.
I just wanted to say that you've helped change my view of Dawn. I really didn't like her at the beginning of S5 because as an the oldest, I viewed younger siblings though those eyes. But you've helped me look past that to see Dawn as a person and not 'the younger sibling'
I don’t know what I’ve done beside aggressively shove my love for Dawn in your face but I’m really glad! I’ve never given much thought, until recently, to the fact that I might subconsciously be relating to her because I am the younger sibling myself. But tbh, I just find her delightful and excellent and I’m just really happy more people enjoy her because of me or not! So thank you for sharing! ;) ♥
