This will be the 788th overall episode and the 41st season premiere.
This is Miley’s 3rd time as host and 2nd time pulling double duty (host and musical guest). She last hosted during the 2013 season where she was both host and musical guest.
Miley will become the first music artist since 1978 to pull double duty for the season premiere episode. The Rolling Stones were the host and musical guests back for the season premiere in 1978.
This is the first time in 10 years where SNL will kick off the season in October.
Starting with this episode, Taran Killam will be doing the impression of Donald Trump. He will be the 4th cast member on the show to do it (Phil Hartman, Darrell Hammond, and Jason Sudeikis. Jimmy Fallon has done the impression, but only as host of The Tonight Show and not on SNL.)
This will be the first episode for new cast member Jon Rudnitsky.
All cast members from Season 40 will be returning. Kyle Mooney, Colin Jost, Sasheer Zamata, and Beck Bennett will all be promoted from featured to repertory status. Leslie Jones, Michael Che, and Pete Davidson will remain featured players.
Six new writers were hired. Fran Gillespie, Sudi Green, Will Stephen, Chris Belair, Dave Sirus, and Paul Masella. Leaving the writers room are Claire Mulaney, Nick Rutherford, Alison Rich, Natasha Rothwell, and Mike O’Brien.
While he’s no longer a writer, Mike O’Brien will still contribute to the show by still creating his short films.
