Now is absolutely the time to politicize Hurricane Irma and other natural disasters

“The full suite of data we have incontrovertibly points to one conclusion: the human effects that contribute to climate change are severe, and are making these disasters we’re experiencing far more damaging than they would otherwise be. The time to transform these scientific lessons into a policy that makes our nation and our world a safer, more secure, more resilient place is now. Natural disasters will always occur, but there’s no good reason to make them worse, especially when we can do something about it today. In the long run, it may be both more compassionate and less expensive to simply craft a better policy, but we can’t do that unless we craft those policies based on the best science humanity has to offer.”

Hurricane Irma has, as of this morning, knocked out power to more than 6 million, caused the evacuation of millions more, and has caused flooding and extreme wind damage across hundreds of miles across Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. When Irma first made landfall in the Florida Keys, it set a new ‘first’ for 2017: two Category 4 (or stronger) hurricanes made landfall in the USA in the same year for the first time. This is not simply a bad year or an unlucky coincidence, but is an effect of a planet that has been artificially warmed by human activity. This continues a pattern we’ve seen globally of more intense but fewer hurricanes in numbers, and 2017 is shaping up to be the most expensive hurricane season in US history. At the same time, wildfires are ravaging the western United States, and no, that’s not coincidence, either.

We don’t have to do this to ourselves; we could craft a science-based policy on climate change to minimize the damage of these disasters in the future. The time to act is now.

How to Write a University-level Essay

Heyo, so school is fast approaching, and seeing as Tumblr is made up of a lot of younger users who will soon be shipping off to college or university soon, I thought I would take it upon myself to help spread my knowledge of essay-writing. Essay-writing is my thing. I love it. I live for it. It’s how I make up for my shitty test marks, and still get by with an 85 average+ in University classes. I’m a historian by trade, so perhaps this information will seem a bit off from what you’re used to, but hopefully, It’ll help you out. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an ask.

1. Consider your question and find your thesis.

      I know, I know. People always say, no! Never start with your thesis/intro paragraph! Go to the body!! Well i’m here to say forget everything you’ve been told. Forget that, forget the stupid hamburger shit they teach you, forget it all and start reading. 

I ALWAYS start with my thesis. Why? Because you cannot make good paragraphs without knowing what you’re researching. You need direction, and a thesis is your map.

So, the question we’ll use shall be: What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War?

Now remember, your thesis is your map. It shows you where to go, what to look for. The thesis is the heart and soul of all your work. You want a good, solid thesis. What does that include, you ask?

  • An idea
  • A reason for said idea
  • Evidence to support said reason, and thus validate the        idea.

So, lets do an example. Let’s say I’m writing on the use of media during the American Civil War. I like photography, and wrote a paper on this in my second year, but im gonna be doing this example freehand(idk where I put that essay lol) so lets work with how I got an A+ on that paper. This will be my idea:

                “Photography during the American Civil War influenced the war’s outcome in the Norths favour.”

This is VERY vague. This is an example of a thesis in bloom! Let’s take it further. Look at the above. What questions would you have from this thesis?

  • -Who was taking photos at that time?
  • -Why did it influence the outcome?
  • -How did it influence the outcome?
  • -Who consumed photography as a media at that time?

This is where you STOP, and start the next step.

2. Research

                Start your basic research with your idea, and the above questions in mind. Look at libraries, ask your professor or TA or librarian, or just do some basic google searches to get to know the subject(but for the love of god if you include a google link in your citation I will personally hunt you down and castrate you.)

I like to start with the basics of any inquiry: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW. Who was taking photos? Where were they displayed that caused influence? ect…These, in relation to your beginner thesis, will help guide you in what form your thesis will take.

Once you’ve finished that, and have a general feel for the time period, go back to your thesis.

3. THESIS 2.0

Go back to your original question: What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War? Now look at your thesis again. It’s too vague, isn’t it?

As you can see, our original thesis was too vague to be a real thesis. So, we NARROW IT DOWN using our WWWWWH progress we focused on during early research!

                “Photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and awareness to the cause.”

Great! But once again, too vague! Questions that may arise include:

  • Who was taking the photos
  • Evidence for donations?
  • Evidence for social awareness?

So, we NARROW IT DOWN again. I’m going to use Andrew Gardner’s photography during the Civil war, as he was one of the most famous and influential at the time.

                “Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the cause…”

The above then gives us the following(why and how are sometimes grouped together):

  • Who: Andrew Gardner
  • What: Photography helped the north win the war.
  • Where: Union-aka northern states
  • When: American Civil War
  • Why/How: Because Andrew Gardner’s photography raised social awareness through this new and budding medium

Use this sort of outline to guide you in the next step!

4. Now that we have a thesis, you need to do some more research and evidence gathering.

The way I like to do this is to go check out a few books from the library(look for text books in particular), and leaf through the index for matching terms. Our matching terms would be:

                Photography, civil war, Andrew Gardner, media

From there, you read over the pages, and see if any of the info relates to your subjects. Copy down quotes, page numbers, book title, author, publishing date and publisher. You need these for your bibliography. Pick and choose relevant information. The filter for relevant information relies entirely on your thesis, because it decides what you need to be looking for—this is why I hate when people tell me to start writing paragraphs before I write a thesis! It’s simply impossible and counter productive, and will cost you hours in revision.

So, gather your information from the library, and cross-reference with peer-reviewed articles and data. For our thesis, we would need data on enlistment numbers in an area after a date of Andrew Gardner’s photography exhibit showcases. No matter what type of essay you’re writing, you can always back up your evidence with data, and it won’t hurt one bit. Don’t be afraid of the numbers, kids!

So, if we were to go back to our thesis, we could now expand on it like this:

             “Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the cause. An increase in  donations and enlistment in relation to exposure to Gardners work is seen in data/evidence point A, as well as in data/evidence point B, which will be fully outlined in the points below.”

This gives you an example of how to lead from a thesis, to your opening paragraph.

5. Data and Evidence Justifications–Paragraph making

This is the section where you can branch your essay into your data and evidence points you gathered in steps 2 and 4. You can have as many paragraphs as you like, just make sure your evidence and data is strong and supported. I personally like to work with my thesis copied and pasted onto the top of every page I write on. This keeps you on track, with your clear goal in mind, and will help you from straying. I will give you an example of how a paragraph might sound.

                Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil War became heavily influential upon the American population at the time, particularly the north, wherein which his work was showcased. The influence of Gardner’s photographic works is seen in the _____, which shows us that without the influence of Gardner’s media influence, war efforts and awareness may not have been as successful as they had been.

This is an alright opener for you to work with. The ___ is where you could put in your data point or evidence piece. The point of the paragraph is to show your support for your thesis by confirming it with evidence.

Your paragraphs should take this form:

  • Present, Confirm, Conclude, Lead.

You present your evidence, confirm its relation to the thesis and confirm the validity of the thesis, conclude by brief revision of evidence, and then lead into your next paragraph. 

6. Conclusion

        Your conclusionary paragraph should be a look-over of the above paragraphs. Restate your thesis, present a summarized version of your paragraphs(one or two sentences only), and perhaps take the time to look at your own views on the subject. An example might look like this:

        “Taking a moment to step away from the above mentioned evidence, I believe it to be scholarly acceptable and even necessary to state my own views on the subject presented. In drawing conclusions, I felt that the above information was correct in that it presented a reality of the time period, in which photography was becoming a medium to be embraced by popular society. People were not only astounded by Gardner’s photographs on a social level, but also a technical level. The astonishment people held at seeing the war-torn battle fields spurred them into action, and even today can still present feelings of dread, fear and loss when looking at his photos…blah blah blah”

Why is it scholarly acceptable and perhaps necessary to state your views? Oftentimes, it is to reassure the reader of your own personal bias’, which exist whether you like them or not, to the subject at hand. Having a small tidbit on your own thoughts about your research ect, breaking away from the third-person droning of an essay can be refreshing and welcoming for a prof at the end of his stack of essay reading.

All in all, do unique things. Professors love it when they come across something that’s not cookie cutter! Even if they present you with a list of essay topics, take the leap and ask them if you can do your own research topic!! Take risks with your essay writing, talk to your professors about what you want to do, and try to have fun with your research. I’ve written on everything from civil war photography to Disney princesses in american media, to the religious formation of idea of heaven and earth. Remember, so long as there’s credible, documented evidence, it’s possible to write about it.

How to spot a misleading graph (Vol.2)

A toothpaste brand claims their product will destroy more plaque than any product ever made. A politician tells you their plan will create the most jobs. We’re so used to hearing these kinds of exaggerations in advertising and politics that we might not even bat an eye.

But what about when the claim is accompanied by a graph? After all, a graph isn’t an opinion. It represents cold, hard numbers, and who can argue with those? Yet, as it turns out, there are plenty of ways graphs can mislead and outright manipulate. Here are some more things to look out for.

Our last post on reading graphs discussed how bar graphs can be manipulated to mislead you, but the scale can also be distorted along the x-axis, usually in line graphs showing something changing over time. This chart showing the rise in American unemployment from 2008 to 2010 manipulates the x-axis in two ways.

First of all, the scale is inconsistent, compressing the 15-month span after March 2009 to look shorter than the preceding six months. Using more consistent data points gives a different picture with job losses tapering off by the end of 2009. And if you wonder why they were increasing in the first place, the timeline starts immediately after the U.S.’s biggest financial collapse since the Great Depression.

These techniques are known as cherry picking. A time range can be carefully chosen to exclude the impact of a major event right outside it. And picking specific data points can hide important changes in between. Even when there’s nothing wrong with the graph itself, leaving out relevant data can give a misleading impression.

This chart of how many people watch the Super Bowl each year makes it look like the event’s popularity is exploding. But it’s not accounting for population growth. The ratings have actually held steady because while the number of football fans has increased, their share of overall viewership has not.

Finally, a graph can’t tell you much if you don’t know the full significance of what’s being presented. Both of the following graphs use the same ocean temperature data from the National Centers for Environmental Information. So why do they seem to give opposite impressions? The first graph plots the average annual ocean temperature from 1880 to 2016, making the change look insignificant. But in fact, a rise of even half a degree Celsius can cause massive ecological disruption. This is why the second graph, which show the average temperature variation each year, is far more significant.

When they’re used well, graphs can help us intuitively grasp complex data. But as visual software has enabled more usage of graphs throughout all media, it’s also made them easier to use in a careless or dishonest way. So the next time you see a graph, don’t be swayed by the lines and curves. Look at the labels, the numbers, the scale, and the context, and ask what story the picture is trying to tell.

What's rick and morty actually like? I've been kinda avoiding it because the guy who tried to convince me it was a great show just went on for ages praising its nihilistic worldview, and I just don't have time for that, but what do you think of the show? Is it worth watching?

This is such an interesting question to answer! 

I mean, short answer is *yes*, absolutely, but as for explaining what this show is *like* I’ve been trying to solidify my thoughts into words for months.

When my brothers had me start watching it, I was skeptical from the start, because it *seemed* like a show that was getting laughs at the expense of its characters, and I just have no space in my life anymore for media that isn’t inherently kind and inherently aware of the humanity of its players.  (Data point: I had a similar reaction to the beginning of Archer, which I wound up really liking.) 

But as I watched more it quickly became obvious that this was a show that was deeply empathetic to suffering.  

In a way, it kind of strikes me as the opposite side of the same coin as Steven Universe (a show I think really embodies the values and needs of the current generation).  It’s not outwardly hopeful and uplifting– it’s a show very much rooted in dark humor and cynicism.  But at the same time, I think it winds up being an unflinching, serious look at the issues a LOT of people in current generations are struggling with– depression, anxiety, PTSD, social alienation, lack of mental health care, a sense of helplessness as an individual facing greater powers of the world, a deep fear that maybe the world is really a bad place and we might not be able to stop it, anhedonia… heck there’s divorce and alcoholism and literally at one point an attempted suicide.  This is some dark shit for a zany universe-hopping space adventure.

These are all issues the show looks at dead on, almost painfully accurately, while at the same time with it’s sharp, incisive sense of humor and it’s nuanced sense of the humanity of its characters it still somehow succeeds in being neither grim nor depressing.  (Another media type I have basically no space in my life for these days.)

It’s not so much precisely hopeful as… cathartic?  Honestly it’s kind of like therapy that way– you have to look straight at your secret fears to see which parts are real and which parts are distortions and where there’s still hope and possibility buried in them. It’s a show that challenges the pessimism and cynicism and fatalism of its characters even as it tackles all this bad shit.  In that way it is uplifting.

This show is so incredibly smart in how it tells its stories and builds its characters and explores their worldviews.  I find myself going ooooh or wow or goddamn, ouch over and over, which is maybe another way I find it comparable to Steven Universe and its deeply nuanced characters and themes.

And, okay, apparently there’s a whole subsection of fandom that has somehow missed all the epically smart symbolism and allegories and storytelling craft and has taken away some kind of “yay, nihilism!” surface level viewing.  This bewilders the heck out of me, because I think the writers have been pretty explicit at “look how self-sabotaging and fucked up Rick’s life is.”  It works because they’re also very clear on “sometimes unhealthy strategies are the only coping skills you’re currently equipped with.  Sometimes they’re the only thing saving your life right now.  Maybe you can figure out better ones.”

I am so here for this ride as they work this out.

This is a comprehensive guide talking about 10 of the most used house systems in Astrology today.  Included are basic information pertaining to each system as well as the strengths and weakness each system presents.  Begins below:

A house system derived from the works of Placidus de Titis in the 17th Century based on the idea that life is motion and not stationary. This method casts a chart using the time measured for the Ascendant to become the midheaven.  Paths are drawn outward from every single degree occupying the space from the 4th house to the horizon and the horizon to the midheaven.  After that both drawn out quadrants are trisected which create the entirety of the houses.

Placidus is the most commonly used house system in the world today.  It began gaining popularity in the late renaissance period and was adapted as a standard onward.  Placidus is extremely popular in the United States and is used mainly in the psychological interpretation of a chart.  Despite its popularity it still has struggles as a time-space based system which causes controversy.  

Placidus well known for its unequal house sizes along with signs enveloped completely in a house called interceptions.  Interceptions can explain psychological issues pertaining to a person’s life; and intercepted planets can show potential issues with energies manifesting outward.

This house system is notorious for its struggles in higher latitudes.  As the latitude increases from a birth location the house cusps become wider, sometimes cause two or more signs to exist in a single house.  For this reason the distortion effect can cause struggles doing interpretations, thus other house systems can be used.

Due to the uneven house sizes this house system was the origin point for “Pletomy’s five degree rule”  all signs within five degrees at the end of the house are to be interpreted as being in the next house (or influencing both prior and the following.

Strengths of the Placidus House System

  • Much has been published about it due it’s mass accepted nature and popularity
  • Every major angle starts at a house cusp thereby diffusing any kind of controversy that confuses some astrologers.
  • inside the 66 parallels it works well and tends to explain issues on the psychological level due to interceptions created with the system
  • Intercepted planets have more strength coming out when transit planets or progressions activate them

Weakness of the Placidus House System

  • The mathematical time space formula to cast the system leaves distortion and holes in charts
  • People living above and below 66th parallels have distorted chart’s not may not always represent their psychological states
  • Planetary rulership readings can be out of line due to sign interceptions
  • Doing transits with this house system can be difficult and sometimes inaccurate more so then other house systems due to uneven house spacing
  • It is more difficult to do mass horoscope readings due to unequal house sizes that are more individualized in this system

Dr Walter Koch’s house system is based upon the idea that houses in a horoscope are relative to the birth place using geographic latitude. The Koch system uses mathematical time calculations from the birth data and points on the ecliptic to formulate it’s house divisions.  

Koch is a more advanced version of the Placidus house system and uses the Midheaven as the starting point for the casting of the chart.  After the midheaven is drawn houses are formed by trisecting the time it takes for the ascendant and midheaven to rise to the ecliptic from the horizon.

Strengths of the Koch House System:

  • More accurately uses the latitude birth location to draw up natal charts
  • The house cusps are more accurately defined due to more advanced math techniques in play
  • Rulerships flow better and the planets in houses may make sense for many more people
  • Since it is similar to Placidus many of the same rules can apply; namely Ptolemy’s five degree rule

Weakness of the Koch House System

  • “Dead zones” in the mathematical spacing from geographic latitudes to determine houses cause distortions in the charts (interceptions and inaccurate planets in houses.)
  • Still faces the issues of Placidus with Intercepted planets and signs
  • Struggles to portray equality when birth latitude is above 66th parallel

Quadrant based House system which is based on space as opposed to time. It is calculated using the prime vertical passing east to west of the Zenith of a specific point on a map.  The Campanus house system casts 12 houses after the prime vertical is cut into 12 equal parts.  The Ascendant begins the 1st house and the midheaven is fixed to the start of the 10th.  This house system shares many similarities to Placidus house system in theory.

As with the Placidus house system this chart is best used for psychological understanding purposes.  It does contain interceptions as every sign may not rule a house cusp despite the equal division of the chart.  Planets may be intercepted and contained within a sign of a house which is said to inhibit their expression outward.  Unlike Placidus this house system can be used all over the earth.  It does not have a restriction on the 66th parallel where the houses dissipate and get distorted.

Strengths of the Campanus House System:

  • Ability to accurately explain the psychological complex of a person
  • Intercepted signs and planets tend to explain shortcomings and issues expressing certain traits
  • Intercepted planets have more strength coming out when transit planets or progressions activate them
  • Is useable anywhere on the Earth with no distortion of the house sizes
  • Every major angle starts at a house cusp thereby diffusing any kind of controversy that confuses some astrologers.
  • The midheaven is fixed to the 10th house for easy interpretation of adult life focus

Weaknesses of the Campanus House System:

  • Planetary rulership readings can be off due to sign interceptions
  • Doing transits with this house system can be difficult and sometimes inaccurate more so then other house systems due to uneven house spacing
  • It is more difficult to do mass horoscope readings due to unequal house sizes that are more individualized in this system

Regiomontanus is a time based divisional quadrant house system.  The celestial equator is divided into twelve divisions and projected on the ecliptic plane. The houses are cast based off the division and come out very similar to Placidus.  The Ascendant starts the 1st house, IC starts the 4th house, 7th house begins the Descendant and Midheaven starts the 10th house.  

The difference with Placidus is usually seen in the degrees the succedent and cadent houses start at.  When compared to Placidus there is usually a difference in the position of the Moon’s nodes.  This is due to the positioning of the crossing of the moon in the elliptical orbit.  Usually the variance comes in the node falling in a different house in some Placidus charts.

Due to the striking similarities in the time based system shared with Placidus, Regiomontanus shares interceptions a cast horoscope.  Like most time-based systems not every sign will rule a house and distortions can exist in the houses when the birth place is close to the poles.

Strengths of the Regiomontanus House System

  • Takes into account the importance of birth location
  • Every major angle starts at a house cusp thereby diffusing any kind of controversy that confuses some astrologers
  • Intercepted planets have more strength coming out when transit planets or progressions activate them

Weaknesses of the Regiomontanus House system

  • The mathematical time space formula to cast the system leaves distortion and holes in charts
  • People living above and below 66th parallels have distorted chart’s not always representing their psychological states
  • Planetary rulership readings can be out of line due to sign interceptions
  • Doing transits with this house system can be difficult and sometimes inaccurate more so then other house systems due to uneven house spacing
  • It is more difficult to do mass horoscope readings due to unequal house sizes that are more individualized in this system

Meridian is a time based divisional quadrant house system sharing similarities to Regiomontanus.  The celestial equator is divided into twelve divisions and projected on the ecliptic plane. The Major difference between Meridian and Regiomontanus/Placidus is the Meridian system uses the east point in calculation as the ascendant. The houses are cast based off the division made. 

In many instances the Ascendant comes off wildly different than other popular house systems.  The houses also come out closer to equal all the way around due to using the equator to cast them.  The Ascendant itself can fall anywhere between the 1st and 12th house in this system.  An interesting factor to note is the Meridian ascendant tends to portray the way a person sees themselves.

Strengths of the Meridian House System

  • Takes into account the importance of birth location
  • Tends to cut down on house distortion due to casting the chart based on the eastern point causing more equal house sizes

Weaknesses of the Meridian House system

  • Still has a slight chance of containing intercepted signs and planets
  • The Ascendant is not traditional and may cause confusion in interpretation for some
  • Signs on the houses tend to come out dramatically different versus other house systems which may turn people away.

A house system which is based on the most simplest of formulas to divide houses.  Created by the Greek philosopher Porphyry, he created a simple system of dividing the ecliptic to cast charts quickly.  Some say this birth chart system was the birth and inspiration for all house systems used in Astrology going forward.  

The ascendant and midheaven are calculated and straight lines are drawn through the chart to create the angular houses of 1, 4, 7 and 10.  After that is established the remaining houses are drawn up by splitting each quadrant into three equal parts of 30 degrees each.  Easiest for drawing up house systems, can be done on the fly, and solves issues with 66 parallel issues with Placidus and Koch.

Strengths of the Porphyry House System:

  • Quick and simply way of dividing the ecliptic to form houses
  • Back in predated times it was easier to cast a chart without the need for mathematicians or computers (like we have today of course)
  • The chart is balanced and every house is equally defined with no chart interceptions
  • Has no issues with latitude parallel’s failing to form a readable chart

Weaknesses of the Porphyry House System:

  • Does not define the chart based on the birth latitude as well as more modern house systems like Placidus of Koch
  • Has short comings interpreting the psychological aspects of a person due to the simplicity of the chart
  • The quick calculating speed of present day computers has surpasses this house systems use

House system in which every house in the horoscope is divided up evenly in 30 degree segments.  Every house begins in the same degree in the next sign as the ascendant began.  The ascendant and it’s degree marks the start of the 1st house.  The 7th house of course is drawn opposite the ascendant a full 180 degrees.  

The midheaven and IC begin 90 degrees equally away from the Ascendant and Descendant.  The midheaven point itself “floats” and is not attached to the start of the 10th house cusp. The Succedent and Cadent houses are drawn up in each quadrant after the angular house 30 degrees apart from one another.

Strengths of the Equal House System:

  • Easy to Draw up.  Just need the ascendant starting degree.
  • Every sign rules a house cusp and is easier for predictive purposes.
  • The Midheaven floats allowing for more versatility in translation
  • No interceptions of signs or planets in house cusps.
  • The system works above and below 60 degrees lateral

Negatives of the Equal House System:

  • Does not factor deeply into the location born on Earth and its impact on development
  • Lacking interceptions with planets and signs means less psychological in depth translation potential of chart
  • The house size difference may cause issues with predictive astrology; especially transits and pinpointing when effects are felt
  • The midheaven may be confusing to interpret for less experienced Astrologers

One of the most ancient and simplest house systems ever created.  A system where all houses are equal in size, and every house is ruled by and contains an entire sign.  The sign of the Ascendant becomes the 1st first house despite the location in degree of the Ascendant.  This can mean a Capricorn ascendant at 15 degrees shows the Ascendant in the middle of the 1st house with 0 degree Capricorn starting the 1st house.  Unlike more modern house systems the Ascendant, Descendant, IC and midheaven points float and don’t always start the 1st 4th 7th and 10th houses cusps.  

This house system is used most popularly by modern astrologers to showcase transit readings in mass horoscope interpretation.  The area of life impacted is easily interpreted since a sign is enclosed in a single house.  Since a planet moves through an entire sign while in transit, it is easy to tell the impact for a specific ascendant.  The house shows the area of life impacted which is easy to read.

An example of above; Scorpio ascendant natal with Mars transiting Sagittarius.  An astrologer would see in whole sign that every Scorpio Ascendant has Sagittarius in the second house.  Mars would be transiting the 2nd house for every Scorpio Ascendant; thus an interpretation may look like “Scorpio Ascendant may have struggles or ups and downs with personal finances this month…”

Strengths of the Whole Signs House system

  • Very easy to draw a chart by finding the ascendant and equally dispersing a wheel around it
  • Lacks interceptions and house distortion due to every sign ruling a house
  • The chart casts and works well anywhere on Earth birth occurs with no parallel issues
  • Mudane aspects (planets aspecting planets through houses) are easier to see with equal sized houses
  • Strong with current transiting planets because every time a planet movies into the sky it starts transiting a new house
  • Astrologers can cast mass horoscopes based on ascendant signs because they can see when a planet switches and which area of life it will affect for a person based on the house it moves into
  • The ASC, DSC, MC and IC are not fixed to the start of the angular houses allowing for more interpretation of how they impact life
  • Due to the ancient working of the house systems, the Arabic lots works best in this house system because they were created using it.

Weakness of the Whole Signs House system

  • Inexperienced Astrologers can struggle without the ASC, DSC, MC and IC fixed to the start of the angular houses
  • Requires more intuitive interpretation to synthesize how the whole chart melds
  • Planets in houses can shift considerably when the chart is cast versus Placidus, Koch and Campanus

A specific form of Astrological chart used when the birth time is unknown.  The Sun is moved to the rising position of the horoscope and becomes the start of the ascendant and 1st angular house.  This chart is meant to show the fully developed Ego and how the aspects with it play out. Some argue it is not fully realized and accurate; but for many without birth times it is better than nothing.

Strengths of the Solar Chart house system

  • Gives a house system to work with when the birth time is unknown
  • Can help correct distorted house systems (Even though better options exist)
  • Can see important aspects to a person’s inner self

Weakness of the Solar Chart House System

  • Doesn’t have a true Ascendant so much of the chart is missing
  • Lacks any kind of angular house structure so it’s impossible to translate their impact on a person’s life

A Zodiac system in which the stars play a significant role in calculating the planet’s, houses and interpretation of the general celestial sky into a natal chart.  This system’s strength is the consistency over time with the degrees of signs not changing as they do in Placidus and other such western house systems.  This can be attributed by the fact that the stars are “fixed” and do not as wobble the earth does.  The wobble accounts for the variation in degrees over time between sidereal and time based western systems.

The effect of degree difference in the tropical zodiac is caused by the seasons change ever so slightly over time due to the wobble.  This action makes the equinox’s fall later in time.  This is why over the course of history Western Tropical house systems have a 23 degree difference (currently) in planets in signs as opposed to the Sidereal placements.  The stars have not moved from their celestial positions, but appear to through western house systems.  The Sidereal will always generate the same consistent chart throughout time.

Sidereal is mainly used in the Vedic Jjoytish Astrology.  When a chart is cast all houses are equal of 30 degree denominations.  Sidereal, unlike western, is mainly used for its fixed star interpretations seen in lunar mansions (or nakshatra’s.)  The moon is the main source of interpretation in Indian charts, as well as Rahu (the north node) and ketu (the south node.)  

Through interpretation, the other planets (up to Saturn, since this system is based on planets only observable by the naked eye) are either cited as malefic or benefic to a chart.  Depending on the ascendant, each sign on a house can create super charged friendly planets called functional benefics.  Functional malefics are the opposite end of the spectrum and can cause blockages from planets expressing themselves.  These concepts are used in place of planetary aspects like conjunctions, trines and sextiles.  

One of the most important things to realize is most people Astrologers do not judge a sidereal chart by planets in signs, rather by planets aspect each other, houses and fixed stars.  Since the sidereal system is consistent it has more scientific interpretations.  Divisional (or Varga charts) are the one of strengths of this house system which brings added depth to a person’s reading.  The other main advantage is the creation of Dasha periods in which a planetary time period is signified which give that planet priority in a chart.

Strengths of the Sidereal House System

  • Time proven and tested system which has been around for thousands of years
  • Consistent due to being based on fixed stars in the celestial sky
  • Does not create interceptions due to its equal house cusps
  • Strong scientific and mathematical calculation method allows for accurate divisional varga charts
  • Easy to read system of planets aspecting each other, houses and fixed stars

Weaknesses of the Sidereal House System

  • Does not incorporate new age philosophies into calculations and casting of chart
  • Since the system lacks interceptions it struggles and doesn’t dive into psychological issues a person may face
  • The system may be far too scientific and not esoteric like some Western Astrologers prefer
  • The translations of the texts that utilize the sidereal system are based off Jyotish writings
  • They can be hard to interpret and some of the translations are either out of date or seem nonsensical

Given the ready availability of high quality images of Mars, people are discovering all types of unexpected things. One of them is what appears to be a red crab. Scientists dismiss this as just seeing familiarity ini images but you have to wonder, are they wrong?

The universe has been expanding ever since it’s beginning 13.8 billion years ago. Astronomers estimate the diameter of the universe to be about 91 billion light-years, but that’s merely an estimate.

It is unknown how that came to be and at the moment random chance is just as valid of a guess as any other. However, five to ten per year are sufficiently large enough to be observed and recovered, although certainly there are others which fall into remote locations. Scientists are beginning to track the large known asteroids that could strike Earth, but many unknown and uncharted objects remain in our solar system. No one knows exactly when the next meteorite extinction event will occur.

Sagittarius: The color and size of Jupiter’s storm

While we know that yes, it is the “great red spot” and it is currently tinted a orangish shade and that three Earths could fit inside of this giant storm. What we don’t know is why it has been shifting colors and why it has been shrinking.

Capricorn: Dark energy and the expansion of the universe

Our current understanding of gravity predicts that all large celestial bodies attract each other and smaller objects. But it appears that most space objects are moving further apart. Dark energy is theorized to be the force causing the expansion of the universe. It is hypothesized that this makes up 70% of space but dark energy has never actually been detected.

Aquarius: Alien star

KIC 8462852 is a strange star that has odd patterns in its light output. One explanation for the light flickering we observe is orbiting alien superstructures. These orbiting objects are hypothesized to be so large they block our detection of the star’s light for short periods. Astronomers think these massive structures could have huge solar panels affixed to them to harvest the star’s energy.

Pisces: A multiverse

This background radiation was expected to be relatively uniform, but instead it has hot and cold spots. These spots are thought to be caused by the pull of other universes on our universe.

Tony should have noticed it sooner.

He could have gone quiet sooner.

The team could have been happier sooner.

He was a genius, dammit, he should have seen within a few hours of meeting them that they didn’t want to hear him speak. Fine. With the Chitauri trying to level Manhattan and Loki leading the charge he had a justified distraction for the first day. For a week, tops. Then he should have noticed. What use was he if he didn’t notice what the team needed. His brain was the only thing they really needed from him. They didn’t need him talking. The team needed his input. Sometimes. If there was tech involved. They talked to him if there was a purpose, but no one came to him just to chat. They never did. Never had.

And hey, genius billionaires were supposed to be eccentric.

Tony was playing to type.

Taking after Howard Hughes.

It was part of a long and noble tradition.

And if he’d stopped making public appearances, well, the press was thrilled to have so much time to spend talking about the new Mysterious-Maybe-Avenger-Maybe-Not that had helped Captain America in his darkest hour.

Steve only came to Tony when the need outweighed the annoyance, which, Tony knew, was what everyone did. He didn’t blame them, it made sense. Everyone made choices like that, all the way down to whether they wanted to get up to reach the remote.

Tony thought the balance was a little different for Steve. He thought maybe Steve reached for him sooner. Thought maybe Steve didn’t mind him quite as much. He was wrong.

He watched the news coverage from his lab, not knowing where Steve had vanished to, not knowing if he was alive, and pushed away the thought. He stood rapt as he got reports of Captain America going rogue, of Nick Fury being killed, and he barely blinked while he watched footage of a battle over the Potomac as Steve, Natasha and some random civilian fought Hydra.

He almost climbed into his suit several times, but stopped himself.

They never contacted him. Tony tried not to think about why not.

It wasn’t until he’d checked the hospital records and confirmed that Captain America was still breathing that Tony went back to inspect what their silence meant.

Even with his life in danger, even with the world in danger, it hadn’t been worth it to Steve to contact Tony. They needed someone who could fly, who could work with tech, who they knew could fight, and they still hadn’t contacted Tony.

It was hard to deny that kind of evidence.

Tony liked evidence when it gave him clear information. He didn’t like the conclusion, but it was good to have clear data. This told him how high the bar of necessity had to be before Steve wanted to see him.

Steve and Nat limped back to the tower with their new friend.

And Tony stopped lying to himself.

“You’d be grumpy, too, if you had to be Peter Hale’s assistant. Do your work, Stiles.”

“I’m going to make it my job to see him smile.”

“Do your actual work.”

“Sure, sure,” Stiles said, finally emailing off the spreadsheet he’d finished two hours before. Having an office job, he had found, was really just a giant exercise in figuring out how to waste time so his boss would believe he’d actually put “enough” effort into it. He couldn’t help it if he was efficient.

Now he could spend the rest of the afternoon figuring out how to make Derek Hale smile.

Scott gave him an unimpressed stare. “Didn’t that just result in the barista hating you last time? I’m pretty sure they started spitting in your drinks.”

Stiles waved a dismissive hand. “That’s just because Lydia Martin had a stupidly complicated order in high school. The theory is still sound. I’ll just bring him coffee until he associates me with delicious caffeine, and then I’ll get to see him smile.”

“At which point your life will be complete?”

“Yes,” Stiles said decisively, picking up his beer again with a blissful smile.

Scott shook his head. “You’re so weird. You need a hobby.” But then Allison from the third floor arrived and he got thoroughly distracted, leaving Stiles to contemplate his perfect plan in peace.

We are all familiar with the shape of squished and baked rocks, that occur at every scale from the centimetre up to the hundreds of kilometres, illustrating the fractal nature of geological processes. Supergirl Least Favorite Episodes

Here are the results for the survey I sent out last week asking people about which were their least favorite episodes from the first two seasons of Supergirl. I got 380 responses which is over 200 more than I got last time (which is very, very exciting). Special thank you to everyone who reblogged the survey to spread it around. It’s thanks to you guys that I got as many responses as I did. The survey format was simple. Everyone answering had the choice of picking their top three least favorite episodes from each season. 

Season 1:

Out of the 380 responses, only 207 answered the first question about season 1. I got 310 data points which means that most people did not use all of their three responses. The episode with the most down votes was episode 10, which is the Winn-centric one. It is one of the episodes where Kara has the least screen time. It is also one of the episodes where Alex has the least screen time. It’s the episode where Cat has the least screen time and James has his third least screen time. Essentially, for most characters other than Winn, there is a dip in screen time and for anyone who has faves that aren’t Winn, that episode might have been uninteresting. (If you have your own opinion as to why people disliked it, feel free to share). 

The second most was Episode 15: Solitude. (Which I previously said was Truth, Justice, and the American Way. Thank you to the people who corrected me.) I’ve heard a few theories as to why people didn’t like it. Some don’t like Indigo as a villain and this was the episode where she was introduced and played a large part. @flafflewaffles said that the rift between Alex and Kara and Kara and J’onn after Astra’s death might have been the reason people didn’t like it. If anyone else has any theories, feel free to reply or send me a message. 

Season 2:

Out of the 380 responses, 372 answered the question about Season 2 and I got 871 data points (more people used all three of their responses). 

The results in season 2 are much less evenly distributed than in season 1. There are three episodes with over 200 votes (Episodes 13, 16, and 17), and the one with the next most (Episode 22) only has 42. Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk got the most votes (238). Star-crossed is next (233) and then Distant Sun (204). Episode 13, 16, and 17 all have one thing in common, which is that the story centers around Mon-El.

The gray seal population in New England has bounced back, and new data points to how well seal numbers are doing.

Gray seal numbers had been decimated for more than a century when the Marine Mammal Protection Act was passed in 1972. The animals were hunted in New England, and as NPR has reported, Massachusetts even paid a bounty of $5 each.

Though it has been clear that the population has grown in number, it has been difficult to pinpoint just how much.

“Past surveys based on traditional methods of counting, using occupied aircraft to survey seals on beaches, islands and seasonal ice cover, counted about 15,000 seals off the southeastern Massachusetts coast,” David W. Johnson, a professor of marine conservation ecology at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, said in a statement.

For the Anon who requested “a crossover of Criminal Minds and NCIS where the reader is married to Morgan and while meeting Gibbs’ team for the case Tony flirts with Reader and Morgan yells at Tony and started to being protective of reader around tony” 

You sat at your desk file open in front of you, fingers flying as you entered data points into a grid before transferring them to an online map. Reid usually handled the whole profile ‘map’ thing, but since he was in Vegas seeing his mother, and since you were still in Quantico on a home case you figured you’d give it a shot.

“I am the man!” You whooped, spinning around in your chair, with the intention of announcing your victory to your husband, Emily, and any other team members passing through. Instead you were met with several people you’d never seen before, all wearing visitor badges.

Your hands dropped from their victory stance and your mouth opened slightly as you cheeks flushed. You quickly stood from your seat, coming around the desk, trying to regain an air of professionalism.

“I, uh, Agent (Y/N) Morgan” You offered, looking the group over, “Can I help you with something?” You asked voice going up slightly in the end. No one told you that people were coming in for questioning.

“Why yes you are, and yes you can.” One of the men offered, giving you a charming grin. You raised an eyebrow him momentarily noting the the handsome face and at ease demeanor. A player for sure.

“I am.” You nodded, “And I will. But first I need to know who you are.” You replied easily, earning a smirk from the rest of the group. The man closest to you (not the flirt) was obviously the oldest, he nodded his head at you, producing a badge, holding it up for you to inspect.

“We’re NCIS. I spoke to your director earlier, about the Mulaney case.” You nodded, mouth going into a small ‘o’ as you glanced in the direction of Hotch’s office.

“Well, apparently I am the last to know, however, the man you’re probably looking for Agent…”

“Gibbs.”

“Agent Gibbs, that’s his office there.” You pointed towards Hotch’s closed door and smiled, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear. You expected Gibbs and his entire team to head in the direction you pointed them, and was slightly surprised when the other three people held back, looking around your office curiously.

“I didn’t know they let beautiful woman like you work for the FBI.” The flirty one grinned, leaning casually on the desk you’d previously been sitting at.

“They do when they’re as smart as she is,” Someone said from behind you and you rolled your eyes, feeling lips connect with your cheek, “Got you coffee, and a sandwich, baby girl. I don’t see us getting much down time so eat now.” You chuckled at the cheek kiss. Derek was not usually affectionate at work, but god he couldn’t miss an opportunity to stake his claim. “Hello, I’m Agent Derek /Morgan/.” He practically growled. offering his hand to the flirty man, causing his two teammates to grin and snicker.

“Agent DiNozzo..” He mumbled taking the hand, and you watched as Derek, you sweet loving and ever caring husband asserted his dominance over some poor man who never had a chance.

“Now if you’re done eyeing my wife, we’ll be holding a briefing in the conference room.” 

Turns out the NCIS team was going to be joining you on this case, and for most of the week it went as thus. DiNozzo purposely ignoring you. You purposely being extra friendly and attentive with DiNozzo, because you thought it was funny.  And Derek practically breathing down the poor man’s neck.

“I want (Y/N) and DiNozzo to go back and recheck all of the alibis, dig a little deeper, see if anything overlaps.” Hotch announced tossing an SUV key at you, which you caught with ease (thank you softball.)

“Hotch.” Derek grumbled, “I think it would be better if I went, let DiNozzo here take Reid to the morgue.”

“Yes.” Tony nodded, and you smirked, rolling your eyes. You put a hand on Derek’s arm, squeezing briefly, shaking your head.

“I’m fine, Hotch, we’re fine. Right DiNozzo?” You asked, and he again nodded his head.

“Yes, of course.”

“Right Morgan?” You asked, turning around and giving a smirk to your big old overprotective husband. He didn’t answer for a moment and you raised your eyebrow, challenging him to say no and admit he was being jealous.

“Of course, dear.” You laughed.

“Good.” You grinned, turning and starting towards the cars, “Come on DiNozzo.” With one more slightly worried look in Derek’s direction Tony took off at a jog after you, eyes focused completely above your head of course. Nowhere else. Never.

The Human Encryption

Biological Survey of Star 8526-3-0 “Earth” Entry by Lead Mind of Covert Species Investigation Team.

Progress has been quite slow in observing the nature of the local “Human” which is surprising since their largest historical and technical database is completely integrated with their global communications system. After a relatively quick integration, the team was ecstatic at the sheer volume of data left completely unregulated. It wasn’t until the ship’s data mine returned nothing but errors that we realized how frustrating this network would prove to be.

It has been several cycles since the team began the manual survey, and we have only recently made a groundbreaking discovery: Human culture appears to value the production and distribution of lies. The discovery was made after the geography tech raised a query concerning the volume of locations recorded that did not have a registered planet location. (See log entry “Superman: Alpha form or unregistered contact?”) After an extensive search, it was concluded that a majority of locations referenced in this network did not exist and probably never have. It is truly baffling to me that a species would dilute such a powerful system of knowledge with lies.

One theory of it’s purpose is that the sheer volume of false information is the network’s true encryption. Rather than requiring specific keys for access, it instead produces thousands of answers to any question to hide the truth. As unconventional as it may be, it has certainly proved effective, sending the team running in circles and rendering all conventional programs useless. The question remains however, how do humans navigate the encryption? Our research has confirmed that the species uses this resource often for tasks of varying significance with success and apparent ease. I fear we have vastly underestimated their aptitude for critical thinking.

Automating and applying this logic to the entire database is impossible without more knowledge, but preliminary data points to a unique human word “fiction” as holding possible answers. For now i will revisit my previous data and attempt to discern any deceit. I knew there was something weird about the so called “Platypus.”
