I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I’ll show you that I am

Darijo Srna’s tears during the anthem was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen so far. I feel so sad for him, losing his father while he was away. I know what that feels like. And yet here he is, a few days later, leading his team again. Just amazing. Respect to him. And all my love and support goes out to him and his family.

Croatia captain’s father dies during game

From the joy of victory to immediate sadness, Darijo Srna is mourning the death of his father after he passed away while watching Croatia defeat Turkey on Sunday afternoon at the age of 75.

The Shakhtar Donetsk right-back played the full 90 minutes and was notified about his father’s death at the end of the game, after he had fought for years against a lengthy illness.

Srna has returned to Croatia for the funeral.

“Dear Captain, we are with you and your family,” said the message published by the Croatian Federation on their social media profiles.

Srna is expected to miss Croatia’s match against the Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne on Friday, and it is unclear whether he will return to the tournament.

Croatia beat Turkey 1-0 thanks to a long distance effort from Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric in Srna’s 130th game with the national team.

Srna has featured at six major tournaments for the Valtreni since making his international debut in November 2002.
