Fraternities are groups of enchanters who hold the same viewpoints, and band together to make their voices heard.

  • Aequitarians are the dominant faction in the College of Magi and in the Ferelden’s Circle. They promote a moderate and popular viewpoint that mages must use their abilities in a responsible and ethical manner, regardless of the Chantry law. Aequitarians believe that all mages should help people and follow a set of rules and ideals. Known Aequitarians include Edmonde, Regalyan D’Marcall, also known as Galyan, Irving, Rhys, Sweeney, Torrin and Wynne. By 9:40 Dragon they are represented in the College of Magi by Rhys.
  • Isolationists are a small group of mages who wish to separate themselves from the templars, the Chantry and even the civilization altogether, both in order to practice magic without scrutiny and to ensure their powers do not negatively affect “ordinary” folk. Niall is the only Isolationist seen thus far, though he merely sympathized and did not consider himself one of them.
  • Libertarians desire the Circle to become an autonomous, self-regulating order without Chantry involvement at any level. While many Libertarians advocate the use of peaceful means to ensure their independence, such as a bill of secession they proposed to the College of Magi in 9:31 Dragon, at least one subgroup, the Resolutionists, are willing to pursue violent means to their ends. Libertarians count Uldred, Adrian and Jeannot among their number. By 9:40 Dragon they are represented in the College of Magi by Adrian.
  • Loyalists follow the Chantry’s word as it is written. They are often called “Chantry apologists” for accepting the Chantry and the templars ever-present observation. Keili is an example of loyalist ideals, though she is not an enchanter and thus cannot join a fraternity.
  • Lucrosians prioritize the accumulation of wealth, with the gaining of political influence a close second. They are few in number.

The more I know characters in my replays, the more I think the Divines could be described like:

Viviene: The “stand alone” Purifier.  She wants the same exact institutions purged as much as possible. She keeps the Circle of Magi and creates a new Templar order under her command, in order to avoid the mistakes made before. Everything works fine after some revolts against her when she took the position, because she is a mage. She is the first Mage Divine, no less. All the harmony of her system relies in her hands [that’s why I like to call her system “stand alone”. Her system will die or will be corrupted when she won’t be in the Power anymore]. She is the conservative/traditional term.

Cassandra: The “traditional” Reformer. She wants similar institutions, with some deep changes in order to improve both sides. Neither the Templar Order nor the Circle of Magi are the same during her rule, and she will rebuild the Order of Seekers of Truth as the watchers of both orders to protect innocents. More or less she tries to balance tradition with vital changes, which are not “extremely different” from the traditional version. Her systems seems more stable considering that once changes are naturalized, they are hard to be erased. This system looks like sustainable by its own, with or without her in the Power. She is the middle term.

Leliana: The “variable” revolutionary. She wants to destroy the old institutions and create new ones. She disbands the Circle of Magi, I assume Templar order does not exist anymore [I can’t remember what my epilogue said about it. In my first playthough I chose her],  and she let the mages to rule themselves. She opens the Chantry priesthood to any race [it was always female humans] and force the Chantry to become devote of helping people, to serve them, like a real church should be. Depending on her personality in the end of the game, she will be merciful with all the sects that will arise against her changes [softened], or she could deal with them by shedding blood [hardened], like the merciless left hand she once was. If she is softened, the Chantry will remain strong. Otherwise, it will be chaos. Her system’s survival depends on her personality. As a merciful person, the system could survive [either way, it’s hard to suspect a future without her presence]; as a merciless person, the system will fall by itself. She certainly is the revolutionary term.

I think this is why the Chantry was not so good designed from a building point of view. It resembles our patriarchal Christian church too much, when the whole world should have been shaped in another way, the balance of power and so on should be totally different in a world which main religion is about women being the most appreciated.

Chantry is not so different that the Imperial Chantry of Tevinter, who interpreted the whole thing in male-version. And that shows the lack of ability of the developers to conceive how this gender difference would have rooted in such society. It’s a fail, it’s not an irony. For me is too clear how they took Christian shitty history, and instead of Jesus they put Andraste, and instead of being a friend judas who betrayed the prophet, it was her husband, and so on… but the resemblance is so obscene, when a female-based religion inevitably would shape the world in another way. Completely different. I mean, the balance of power would be so different, the concept of women. The story of Aveline would have not existed, for example. A long list of things.
