Rectify (2013-2016), 4 seasons, 30 episodes

“I’m not sure what to make of this drastic change of course in my life. I’m certainly not against it”

Rectify has consistently been one of the best shows on TV since it began airing in April 2013. It is also a show with ratings so small that finding other people who watch is always a struggle. Yet those who have given their time to seek out this series know how special it is. This is not a show based on big action scenes or twists intended to lure in audiences. This is a story about one man, one night 19 years previously and the ongoing repercussions. It is about moving on and finding purpose. It is about faith, forgiveness, justice, humanity, the very nature of who we are.  It is truly an unique show. I am going to miss it so much.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Director - Joel Coen, Cinematography - Roger Deakins

“You seek a great fortune, you three who are now in chains. You will find a fortune, though it will not be the one you seek. But first… first you must travel a long and difficult road, a road fraught with peril. Mm-hmm. You shall see thangs, wonderful to tell. You shall see a… a cow… on the roof of a cotton house, ha. And, oh, so many startlements. I cannot tell you how long this road shall be, but fear not the obstacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward. Though the road may wind, yea, your hearts grow weary, still shall ye follow them, even unto your salvation.”

Lets Grow Old Together.

“Lets grow old together Lily.”

His words were sweet, a soft never ending buzz that played in her mind for days, which grew into weeks. Months and then eventually years.

“Lets grow old together Lily,” He only said those words to her once in their lives, they were simple words that can be easily said. He first uttered those words to her after their first time in bed together back in their days at Hogwarts.

It was quiet for a long time, Lily cried a little, it was her first time ever after all. She laid on her back, breathing in and out slowly, eyes closed and imagining a future with James. Taking in the scent of his cologne mixed with his natural sweat was the most beautiful thing in the world to Lily, she would love to wake up and inhale that scent everyday for the rest of her life. She was brought back into reality when his breath blew into her face and he was on his side facing her. That was when those sweet words graced her ears.

“I would love that,” she responded.

Two years later they were 19, they were lying in bed together when he proposed to her. She was on her back, he was on his side his hand splayed across her still flat stomach. They were too young to be parents, too young to be fighting a war, to young to be married. But fuck societal norms. James loved Lily and Lily loved James and at that point its all that really mattered. He made the suggestion to be married, it was more of a though really - than a proposal. She loved that idea. And they were married the following week, the same words he uttered to her years earlier still playing in her mind.

“Lets grow old together Lily,”

The next time Lily remembered those words was when her baby boy was born. It was the most horrific 18 hours of both of their lives, the worst pain Lily had ever been in. She screamed and cried the entire night, James held her hand tight and pressed soft kisses to the side of her head.

He encouraged Lily to go on even when she had convinced herself she was going to die. He cheered her on when she swore like a sailor. Marlene jumped along side her, the excited rumble throughout the room when the baby boys cries finally filled a stoic white room.

Hours later she lay in bed, her baby boy held tight in her arms, James sat next to her closely, admiring the baby so much. Both new parents were so exhausted but neither could take care enough to go to sleep, not when they could stare at their baby for the rest of the world.

“I’ve been thinking Lily, lets name him Harry.” James said finally, his voice a little hoarse.

“He looks like a Harry.” Lily said after a thought she continued with, “Harry James Potter.” She looked up to smile at James. “I think it suits him well.”

“I would love that.” James said, before delving back into the world of silence in admiration for the human him and Lily created together.

Fast forward to six months later, and James never had seen Lily cry harder than when he brought home the new that Marlene was killed in another death eater attack. They wiped out her entire family. And Lily couldn’t begin to fathom her grief.

She sat in her rocker and held Harry tight to her, silently sobbing into the infants shoulder. And later in bed that evening, the crying continued, this time gross, loud tears were produced into James chest. She clenched her entire face up, biting hard onto her tongue until it bled.

“Lily-” James began when he noticed she had stopped breathing, “Lily look at me,”

She unpressed her face from his chest and he has never seen her so lost before, so broken, not even when her own parents had died. The innocence in her young puffy, tear stained face broke James heart a thousand times over.

“Lils,” James put his hands on each side of her face, cupping it. “-breath Lily, Its gonna be okay. It has to be okay.”

“No its not.” She spoke through her tears, “its Marlene, James. She was never going to die, shes Marlene.”

She searched his face for an answer to a question that was never asked. Taking in his worn down appearance. His hair was a mess as per usual, his eyes glowed behind his glasses from the tears. And he had a small bit of stubble beginning to grow around his chin.

“James, they killed Marlene. If they can get her whats going to happen to the rest of us?”

They celebrated Harry’s first birthday with the information of the prophecy. Born as the seventh month dies to parents who have thrice defied him. The prophecy was made about their own son. Their baby boy.

“Lets get the fuck out of this damn country.” James said that night. They sat around the table, Lily holding Harry, who bounced around in her lap, pounding his fists all over the place. James sat next to her, and then Sirius and Remus were across from them.

“James you cant just leave. Theres a war to fight.” Sirius told him logically.

“My baby is not going to be killed in this war.” Lily said. And that was the end of that conversation.

The Potters will move to America. It was decided then that they will not go into hiding. They will run away, and do whatever it takes to protect their baby.

They didn’t run away like cowards, they left to save Harry. There was no point in staying in a war just to die. They were going to grow old together. Just as James had promised on the one night that seemed like centuries ago.

Danielle McKinnon || Hufflepuff || Pureblood || 5th year || FC: Talulah Riley || OPEN

Danielle was always quite reserved, she never felt the need to be like her older sister and decided to mind her own business and make friends within her own house. She never was one for caring at what others had to say about each other and themselves, sure she pretended she was listening but in reality, she couldn’t care less. All she really wants to do is try to care more and pass her OWLs without wanting to end herself because of all of the homework she’s getting. Maybe she’ll find someone to deal with her somewhere along the year.

  • Younger sister of Marlene McKinnon
  • Murdered with her family
