Just finished seeing him in Three Days in the Country at the National Theatre. I was sat up in the second to last row, just minding my own business when
WALKING UP THE STAIRS TOWARDS ME???????!!!!!!!?!?!?!!!??!!
HE WALKED RIGHT PAST ME TO GET TO HIS SEAT!!??!?!?!?!!!!
So, that happened.
I’m pretty sure he was sat in the middle of the furthest back row and damn, he was looking dapper. There was one moment in the play when Mark did something funny and I laughed to myself but LITERALLY IAN WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WHOLE THEATRE THAT LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND THEN I DIED.
The set design, lighting, and costuming was beautiful. I felt like I was in a painting. Mark’s performance, of course, was glorious. The best of the bunch. He was so so so so so good. Funny and nuanced and terrific acting. Plus he had a walking stick as a prop, so naturally I superimposed a brolly over it in my head.
If you’re in London and you have a chance to go, GO, if only for Mark’s performance and nothing else.
