Hi Brönte! I've really been getting into the smiths lately and I'd really appreciate me if you could make a list of their best songs with lgbt themes? And maybe stories of the band involving that if u have the time :) thanks

Sure!!

  • This Charming Man
“I would go out tonight, but I haven’t got a stitch to wear; this man said “it’s gruesome that someone so handsome should care””
  • Hand In Glove
“and if the people stare, then the people stare - oh, I really don’t know and I really don’t care”
  • Reel Around The Fountain
“you can pin and mount me like a butterfly”
  • What Difference Does It Make?
“all men have secrets and here is mine, so let it be known”
  • I Know It’s Over
“love is natural and real, but not for such as you and I, my love”
  • Cemetry Gates
“Keats and Yeats are on your side, while Wilde is on mine”
  • There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
“driving in your car, oh, please don’t drop me home, because it’s not my home, it’s their home, and I’m welcome no more”
  • These Things Take Time
“I’m spellbound, but a woman divides”
  • How Soon Is Now?
“I am human and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does”
  • Vicar In A Tutu
“as natural as rain, he dances again and again and again in the fabric of a tutu any man could get used to, and I am the living sign”

They also covered The Cookies’ I Want A Boy For My Birthday during their first performance, during which Morrissey’s close friend James Maker danced on stage in stilettos! There are tragically no recordings of this performance, but there IS a recording of Morrissey and Johnny singing and playing the song together in Johnny’s bedroom before The Smiths were signed to Rough Trade! (Let it be known, by the bye, that Johnny knocked on Morrissey’s door to ask him if he wanted to start a band about a week before his 23rd birthday.)

Another related story about the band that I love is that is that the original bassist, Dale Hibbert, once told Q Magazine that “The Smiths originally was going to be a gay band. That’s what they said. That’s why I Want a Boy for my Birthday was going to be the first single.”

“originally”

“was going to be”
