daine & numair

I love height differences where:

  • the tall one isn’t even that tall, it’s just the short one is THAT short.

Seeing all of your ideal casts for your characters... how do you feel about people headcanoning them as people of color? Your books were incredibly formative for me, and I was very attached as a kid to the idea of Daine and Numair both as POCs (and just as characters!), not to mention half of your other characters, and while I don't expect that to be canon, what are your feelings on the matter?

I would never object to anyone imagining things differently. That’s how you exercise your creativity. Some of the most beautiful fanart of Daine that I’ve seen has her cast as a POC. Arram is midway between dark and light skinned anyway.

Your mind is your own. You can do whatever you want with your mind. To try and make up for my past whiteness, there are a lot more people of color in TEMPESTS AND SLAUGHTER.

It’s not Monday. Have some marriage stuff.

They don’t buy cute “His” and “Hers” items when they get married. They’re one; they share. Dress shirts for him are shirt dresses for her, his boxers are her house shorts, his various other shirts become her pajamas, and ok, maybe he’s the one doing most of the sharing. But he’s fine with it. He likes it that way. Really likes it.

I found a thing. 😍

I've been reading your books since I was like 8 and I still don't know how to phrase this? So 20 years later, looking back I have to ask. The relationship between Daine and Numair and the age difference and power dynamic initially, I now see as having kinda unsettling overtones. She's a teen, he isn't. Any expansion or discussion you'd have to keep real teens from following her footsteps? As a teen I thought it was terribly romantic and all.

The thing I keep having to explain is that this is a medieval period, similar to the edge of the Rennaissance but not quite. This is a period where marriages were arranged or made where the bride was often as young as twelve or fourteen. The way I have it set in my own universe, there are girls and boys getting married as young as fourteen to sixteen in the Lower City. Some of the upper classes may wait as long as eighteen, and their marriages are arranged.

In those days, young men had a hard time finding work that would support them AND a family, so they would often wait until they were older to marry. In the upper classes, in the merchant classes, a man would need to be sufficiently in craft or status to have a wife. Numair was only then of an age, as a mage, to think about taking a wife if he were to ever really focus on such a thing. (He’s usually thinking of other things.) Daine, at seventeen, is teetering on the verge of being an old maid.

It makes contemporary people uncomfortable, but I try to keep the historic elements of my books as close as possible to actual history.

A few hours later they were attacked by giant spider-people.

Seriously though, Daine finds out that the hawk she’s been taking care of is actually a hot naked guy and gets very upset about the whole thing, and the hot naked guy (no longer naked, though) goes out to apologize and they talk about hair and basically a friendship is formed, it’s very beautiful indeed

When Romeo thought Juliet was dead, he bought an illegal poison, went to all the effort of going to her tomb, killed a close family friend, didn’t actually look at her (otherwise he would have noticed that she wasn’t dead) and killed himself.

When Daine thought Numair was dead,  she woke up an army of dinosaur skeletons and rampaged through a palace, effectively crippling the most powerful empire in the world for at least a decade.
