Started the Halloween movie viewing a little early with this one from Hammer, The Curse of the Werewolf (1961). This is a serviceable horror film with all of the Hammer horror elements. Oliver Reed is outstanding, and of course, the sets are first rate. This film is dragged down (IMHO) by a slow script and the pacing is pretty bad. Horribly slow sections are followed by a seemingly rushed ending. The ending is very good, however, with shades of Dr. Caligari and Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) as the werewolf is chased over rooftops of an expressionistic looking town. Worth a look, but not Hammer’s finest hour.
