d'olier street


I meant to mention this when I did the post about Gucci’s Art Deco inspired Spring 2012 collection. This is the Gas building on D'Olier Street in Dublin. It’s currently being used by Trinity College as their school of nursing and midwifery.

I know about this building because my amazing friend Izzy just qualified as a midwife with top marks and I went to a prize giving ceremony there. I was completely in awe of just how beautiful this building was. The interior is one of the best preserved examples of Art Deco decoration in Ireland as so much has already been destroyed. The building itself dates back to 1818 but was remodeled in the Art Deco style in the early 30’s. 

You can see heavy influences of the Egyptian discoveries that were being made in the 1930’s, King Tut’s tomb etc, some of the door frames are sarcophagus shaped! Definitely worth going down and having a look…
