A/N : Let me just say that I was dying to make them kiss at the end, buuuut I also wanted to keep their relation as a friendship to avoid the clichés…

One week had passed since Alex told you about your brother’s death. You spent all your days in Jeff’s room, looking at pictures of him and crying your eyes out. You still didn’t know what happened to him, your parents still couldn’t talk about it. Alex called you several times, sending you texts to see if you were okay or if you wanted to maybe talk, but you didn’t want him to hear you crying even though you really wanted to talk to him. You felt weak, your body unable to carry you out of the room. You jumped when you heard the squeaking sound of the door opening.

“Hey sweetheart…” your mom said, as she walked towards the bed.

“Hi mom.” you answered almost inaudibly, still staring a your brother’s picture. Your mom put a hand on your shoulder, turning you slighly so you could look at her. You slowly sat up and looked down at your hands, trying to fight back the tears.

“I just called Alex. You haven’t left your bed since last week, and I think it might be good for you to finally see someone again. Go take a shower honey, he’ll be here soon.” she patted your cheek, and you slightly nodded, smiling at the thought of seeing your best friend again. Your mom planted a kiss on your cheek then stood up before walking out of the bedroom, closing the door as she left. You sighed deeply, before slowly making your way towards the bathroom. You turned the lights on and stared at yourself in the mirror. Your eyes were puffy and red, and the bags under your eyes were heavy, nearly black. You sighed again then gazed away from the miror, before taking off your clothes.

Seconds later, you finally stood under a hot shower for the first time in days. You closed your eyes, enjoying every second that you could, and let the water rush over every part of you. After about 5 minutes, you turned off the water and stood there for a minute or two, enjoying the sound of each drop of water hitting the floor.

Then, you stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around your chest before walking back to your bedroom. You opened the doors of your closet and grabbed a jean with a simple t-shirt. You put your clothes on and sat on your bed again, staring at the ceiling. You didn’t know what to think, or what to feel. Everytime you tried to focus on something else, your mind always reminded you of Jeff. All the memories, all the fights, the laughters. And the day your heart was torn apart.

As you were about to fall back on Jeff’s bed, you heard your mom talk to someone downstairs, so you assumed Alex was there. You stormed out of the room and ran downstairs.

“Alex.” You almost whispered as you ran up to him and hugged him tightly, making him hug you back firmly. You couldn’t help but let your tears fall again.

“I-I’m sorry.” you croaked out, reffering to the fact that you never answered his texts and calls, before continuing to wet his shirt with your tears, as he gently stroked the back of your hair.

“Hey, shh…don’t apologize. You’ve nothing to blame yourself for.” he said and kissed the top of your head, while your mom watched the two of you with a hand to her heart and teary eyes. She loved Alex, and the fact that he was always there for you warmed her heart.

“Thank you for coming Alex. It means a lot.” she said.

“Anytime, Mrs.Atkins.” he answered with a slight smile, and she nodded before leaving the two of you alone.

When you both pulled away Alex cupped your cheeks with his hands, wiped your tears and kissed your forehead.

“It’s okay. I’m here Y/N.” he soothed before hugging you again.  He stepped away and held both your hands in his.

“I missed you so much.” you said, as your tears wouldn’t stop running down your cheeks. “Please, d-don’t leave me.” you choked as you fell in his arms again, your hand clenching his t-shirt, holding on to him as if your life depended on him.You felt his arms tighten around your waist and you placed your head in the crook of his neck.

“Hey, I’m not leaving you. I’ll never leave you Y/N. Please don’t cry. I can’t stand to see you like that.” you nodded slightly and pulled away, before wiping your tears with the back of your hand.

“Stay here tonight.”

“Did you really think I was going to leave this house ?” He said raising an eyebrow, and you slightly laughed, for the first time in days. “Your mom told to spend the night here when she called me”.

“Thank you.” you whispered and took his hand in yours, slowly walking up the stairs. You both made it inside of your room, and you closed the door behind you.

“I haven’t stepped inside this room since the day you told me about Jeff.” you confessed with a sad smile. You walked over to your bed and sat down in silence. You looked up at your best friend, as your eyes started to tear up again “I need to know what happened, Alex.” you begged. He sat down on the bed beside you and you rested your head on his shoulder.

“I don’t think I’m the one who should talk to you about this, Y/N…”

“Alex…Jeff was- is my brother. I want to know what happened to him, I want to know why did he left me…because I never got to say goodbye.” you said, whispering the last sentence, before letting a tear fall again. Alex wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into his chest, then he let out a sigh.

“When you walked into the school…Did you notice the posters hanging on the walls ?” He kept his voice soft as he rubbed his hand up and down your back, trying to sooth and calm you

“N-not really. I was too busy looking for you and Jeff.” you sligtly smiled, while Alex kissed the top of your head.

“The school put drunk driving posters everywhere”.

You looked up at him with a sad and shocked expression on your face. “D-did he died in a car crash ?W-was Jeff driving drunk?” Alex nodded before wiping a tear that streamed down your cheek as you spoke.

“Clay said he wasn’t drunk. He talked to him a few minutes before he left, and he was sober. I guess we still don’t really know the truth.” he said, tracing tiny circles on your skin while you stayed silent. There was so much that your brain was trying to process, so much that made your heart ache. You were so glad to have Alex by your side, he was always the only one who could calm you down in any situations. You felt safe with him, a feeling you’d never felt with anyone else. Somehow, he always managed to make you feel better no matter what kind of mood you were in.

“I miss him so much.” you said, without emotion in your voice. You couldn’t cry anymore. All you could do was to stare blankly out the window in front of you.

“I know, we all do. He would be proud of you, Y/N.”
