“When my child was born and took her first breath and then when she put that tight grip on my finger […] With that experience I had at the birth of my baby girl, everything changed. I’d do more when it’s for my baby girl. She’s freed me from my own self, which makes life far more interesting. I now look at life through the eyes of a pure spirit, which is really, really fantastic. It’s a lot of work, but the rewards are just exponential, and the meaning of life and how I see things are clearer. Sure, I’m still doing a photo shoot today and she’s not around. But when I do have her, I’m just not available to anyone or anything. I don’t care who’s calling. I’m with my baby.”
- Jeremy Renner on how being a father has changed him
Imagine Chris and the Avengers cast talking about you on Jimmy Kimmel.
You settled in your hotel room bed and turned on the television just in time to catch your husband, Chris Evans, and fellow cast members; Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner live on Jimmy Kimmel. You were meant to be at the interview with them but your commitment with your new movie sent you to London instead, and so there you were watching them answer the questions you were suppose to as well about the movie you all had acted in six months ago.
The interview started and the cast took their seats. You smiled at how handsome Chris looked in the outfit you had told him to take with him; everyone else looked great too. Seeing them made you miss their company and you wished you had been able to join them on the couch.
“It is so great to have you guys here tonight,” Jimmy addressed them with a wide grin. “The movie isn’t even out yet and everyone’s already excited to see part two.” The audience cheered their agreements. “Thank you all for coming out. I know all of you are very busy which is why we’re missing a few cast members tonight.”
The cast nodded in acknowledgement of your absence as well as a few others.
“Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, as well as your wife, Y/N,” Jimmy said to Chris and Chris nodded again, this time with a cute pout. “I heard she’s currently in London filming her next movie.”
“Yeah,” Chris chuckled. “She actually left for London like- a week after we wrapped up Infinity War. I headed home to relax and she went on to her next job, it definitely says a lot about our level of demand in the industry.” He joked and you chuckled softly. “No, I’m extremely proud of her. She’s up for an Oscar, did you guys know that?”
“How can we not? You talk about it all day every day,” Robert rolled his eyes as he pretended to be annoyed with Chris. “Even Y/N doesn’t talk about it as much as you do.” The room laughed. “No, seriously though- he talks about it all the time. Doesn’t he, guys?” He asked the cast for confirmation.
“All the time,” Scarlett and Jeremy nodded.
“Even Y/N tells him to shut up about it,” Mark chuckled.
“You’d think he was the one getting nominated,” Chris H added.
“He’s a proud husband,” Jimmy defended Chris.
“Yeah,” Chris laughed, “just leave me be.”
“He’s a lovesick puppy, that’s what he is.” Robert teased, glancing back at Chris. “Ever since the second he laid eyes on Y/N, he’s been head over heels for her.” The cast nodded and Chris blushed deeply, dropping his head. “You should have seen him the first time she walked on to the set, his eyes popped out of his skull and he became a huge blubbering mess.”
You giggled to yourself, remembering the day Robert was talking about. You’d been friends with Robert for quite a while now, having met on the set of ‘Sherlock Holmes’ in 2009. He was the one who took you around on your first day at the Marvel Studios and introduced you to everyone, including your husband. Chris was a huge mess the first time he met you, mainly because he was already a fan of your work and you were drop dead gorgeous in a black lace dress; he was a bit of a sucker when it came to lace.
“Yeah, okay,” Chris chuckled, “I’ll admit I was a bit of a mess when I met Y/N.”
“A bit?” Chris H scoffed then chuckled. “We were all embarrassed for you, dude. You’re lucky she’s ridiculously nice and ignored your rambling otherwise you wouldn’t be here with that ring on your finger. You lucked out with her, my man.”
“Oh trust me, I know.” Chris chuckled. “She reminds me everyday.”
He was joking- while you did remind him occasionally, mostly as a joke, sometimes when you were fighting- he didn’t need a reminder when it came to you. He knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you even before the first date.
The two of you clicked pretty much immediately and every day on set became like a scene out of a romantic comedy. It got to a point where Joss had to keep you two apart because you and Chris couldn’t be in the same room without flirting and/or ending up in a fit of giggles.
Your relationship with him progressed with MCU film franchise. You met and started dating on the set of ‘The Avengers’, by 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, you’d moved in with him, he’d proposed during 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron’, and by the time 'Captain America: Civil War’ came around you’d been happily married for almost a year. The end of 'Infinity War: Part 1’ called for your first pregnancy- which the two of you were planning on keeping a secret until the three month mark. And by the end of 'Infinity War: Part 2’, your little miracle would have been born and introduced to the world.
“I know we’re here to talk about the movie but can we just discuss your personal life for a moment?” Jimmy asked Chris. “You and Y/N have been married for a while now, do you think we’re going to see little Captain Americas and little Agent 25s running around anytime soon?”
You pressed your lips together when you saw Chris’ reaction. He looked like he was definitely dying to tell someone but the two of you made a promise and neither of your families knew yet so he kept his mouth shut and let Jeremy made the first comment.
“He’s enough of a child for the both of them,” Jeremy joked. “You should see them out and about, they paint the town red till the break of dawn. It’s no wonder they work together 'cause I don’t think anyone else can keep up with them.”
You laughed, suddenly glad you weren’t there to be teased.
“You two like to party?” Jimmy asked, chuckling.
“Why do you think they don’t have kids yet?” Mark chuckled.
“So they’re the ones you guys call to have fun, Chris and Y/N?”
“Definitely.” Robert nodded. “Those two are absolutely hectic.”
“Mm hm,” the entire cast nodded with all their thumbs pointed at Chris.
“Nooooo, we’re not going to do that!” Chris held his hands up in surrender. “We’re on TV, guys! Our parents are watching this. C'mon, if Y/N sees this she’s going to lose her mind. We promised her no embarrassing stories, so c'mon!”
“If she doesn’t want any embarrassing stories about her then she should settle down,” Robert said. “Hear that, kid?” He addressed you through the camera. “Become a mom and everything embarrassing you’ve ever done is wiped clean off the slate.”
You chuckled and picked up your phone, texting Chris the following words.
Just break the news, babe. We’ll call our families after the interview. I know we said we’d wait but it’s happening so we might as well tell people. I know you’ve been dying to tell them anyway so go ahead, you’ve got my full support. ❤️️
After sending the text, you turned your attention back onto the TV screen. Chris flinched and you knew it was from the buzzing in his pocket. He subtly pulled his attention away from Jimmy and the rest and took his phone out of his pocket to read the text. You saw his smile and you couldn’t help but smile back. He looked up at the screen and winked, knowing you were watching.
“Hey guys, um-” Chris cleared his throat and drew the attention onto himself. “I’ve got something to announce. Y/N and I have been keeping this a secret for a while now and um- she actually just decided it was time we break the news. She just texted me telling me to announce it right here on Jimmy Kimmel.”
“No my God,” Scarlett gasped and turned to Chris a knowing smile. “Is she-”
The rest of the cast turned to Chris with widened eyes and excited smiles, waiting for confirmation.
“Yup,” Chris nodded, smiling. “We’re expecting our first child.” He said and the whole room gasped.
“Wow!” Jimmy clapped. “That is- congratulations, you guys. Y/N,” he looked into the camera. “We wish you could be here with us. Congratulations, you two are going to make wonderful parents.” He said and you smiled.
“No way!” Robert’s jaw dropped, his excited grin visible as he turned from Chris to the camera. “I knew it,” he pointed to the camera and you chuckled. “I’m so proud of you, kid. I can’t wait to meet your little one.”
“Congratulations, man!” Jeremy slapped Chris on the back excitedly.
“Yeah, welcome to the dad clan. You’re one of us now,” Chris H shook his hand, grinning.
“I’m so happy for you guys,” Mark told him, smiling. “You’re both going to make amazing parents.”
“Thanks guys,” Chris grinned. “I’m very excited as well.” He turned his attention back onto the camera, speaking directly to you. “I couldn’t have asked for a better person to experience parenthood with and- I’m ready as long as I’ve got you by my side, sweetheart. I love you and I can’t wait to see you.”
You smiled, feeling your eyes water as you picked up your phone and texted him your response.
A/N: Hi hi, I’m back from my hiatus. I didn’t really plan for a hiatus, I’ve just been busy with work and suffering from a bit of a writer’s block. (You can tell I’m still suffering a little because this one’s kind of a mess) Anyhoo, this is a request from @shadowprincess0218. Hope you enjoy it. X
“Oh God,” Chris mumbled under his breath when Jennifer Lawrence finished her speech. You glanced over at your husband, whose hand was now adjusting his tie as a nervous tick. “My category is next,” he said to himself then swallowed the lump in his throat.
“You’re going to be fine.” You assured him, placing your hand on his knee and giving it an assuring squeeze under the table. “Stop fiddling, you’re going to mess up your tie.” You told him but his hand remained on his tie, adjusting and readjusting.
“Why aren’t you nervous?” He raised an eyebrow, glancing at you before focusing his attention back on his perfectly fine tie. “It’s your screenplay I directed, it’s your work on the line too.” He reminded you and you chuckled. “Martin Scorsese won best director for your last screenplay, what if I don’t win one for this one?”
“You will because you’re an amazing director, you wouldn’t have gotten a nomination if you weren’t. Stop, Chris.” You chuckled softly and wrapped your hand around his wrist, pulling his hand away from the tie that he would not stop adjusting. “No matter how many times you adjust that tie, you’re still going to be nervous. Just-” You slipped your cool, dry hand into his clammy one. “Hold my hand and breathe.”
“But my hand is all clammy.” He told you as he tried to pull his hand from yours, only to have you tighten your grip by entwining your fingers with his. “Right,” he chuckled softly, “you don’t care about that. Thank you,” he pressed a kiss to the side of your head and you smiled.
“Let’s move on to our next category, best director.” Your dear friend and husband’s co-star, Robert Downey Jr.- the host of the 89th annual Academy Awards- started. You glanced at Chris when you felt him tense in his seat next to you. “Please put your hands together for Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, two people I’m proud to call my friends, to present the next award.”
The crowd erupted into an applause as Scarlett and Jeremy walked out, they hugged Robert before stepping in front of the podium with the golden envelope that had the information that could make or break yours and Chris’ heart. You weren’t all that concerned about your screenplay getting best director, you were more concerned about your husband getting it because he was an amazing director who deserved all the recognition in the world. Now it was your turn to fiddle; your hand reached for your clover necklace which you wore whenever you felt you needed the luck, and you definitely needed it now. You knew your husband was very talented but talent wasn’t always what got you an Oscar; Leonardo DiCaprio had incredible talent but he only had one Oscar, you could only hope Chris wasn’t as unlucky as Leo.
“And the nominees for best director are…”
You lost focus on Scarlett’s voice when you heard Chris mutter, “I feel sick.” You turned to him and chuckled softly, giving his hand a light squeeze. “I know it’s nerves but- I genuinely feel like I’m going to throw up. Can you do something to distract me?”
“I could kiss you but I’m afraid you’ll throw up in my mouth,” you told him and he chuckled. “Just keep your eyes on me, focus on my touch, and match my breaths.” You instructed and he followed. “How did you manage award shows before me, Christopher Evans?” You teased him and he chuckled again.
“With great difficulty.”
“And the best director award goes to…” You and Chris turned to the stage as Scarlett opened the envelope. Both her and Jeremy’s smile reached their eyes and you felt your heart skip a beat. Could it be? Was Chris’ name inside the envelope? “Chris Evans!”
Applause and cheers broke out around the two of you. You knew what had just happened but Chris was still in a daze, only realizing it was his name that was called when you pulled your hand away to give him the standing ovation he deserved. He rose to his feet and hugged you tightly, kissing your cheek and whispering an “I love you” in your ear before making his way to the stage.
“Good job, Dorito.” Robert patted him on the back as he walked past.
“Congratulations, Chris,” Scarlett passed him the Oscar then hugged him tightly.
“You deserve it, man.” Jeremy smiled and shook his hand before leaving him to his speech.
The crowd settled and you sat back down as Chris took the podium, he looked at his award then looked out into the crowd at you with a wide smile. You felt tears well in your eyes out of pure adoration and joy for your husband; he was finally getting recognized for something other than his good looks. He was very handsome- there was no doubt about it- but he was so much more than that which was why he enjoyed directing; directing got people talking about his talent rather than his physical appearance.
“Wow,” Chris began speaking and the crowd fell silent. “This is incredibly surreal. I always thought that I’d only ever be up here to present an award, never in a million years did I think I’d get a nomination- let alone a win. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity so thank you to the Academy.” The crowd clapped. “And now for the more personal thank yous. To my mom and dad, for giving me the chance to pursue my passion. To Anne, my agent, who got me the jobs that brought me here. And of course, to my beautiful wife, Y/N, who has only made my already wonderful life better with each passing day.”
You smiled and wiped away a tear that fell unknowingly.
“Without you, sweetheart, my life and all of this would be meaningless.” He told you and your smile widened. “You give me all the support and love I need to get through each day and- I just- I wouldn’t be here without you.” He glanced at his Oscar then chuckled, “like literally because she is the reason I had a movie to direct in the first place. Without your talent, I wouldn’t be able to apply mine and I wouldn’t have this Oscar so- from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for being so talented, thank you for trusting me with your work, and thank you for being the light in my life. I love you, Y/N.” He said and smiled when you mouthed the same three words back.
The music started playing which gave Chris his cue to make his exit and return to your side. “Aren’t they just the cutest?” Robert teased as Chris disappeared back stage with Scarlett and Jeremy. “You should see them when we have them over for dinner, with their heart eyes and their hands all over each other.” You shook your head at Robert, biting back your smile. “Congratulations Chris, and Y/N. Your screenplay got him best director, let’s see if it gets you best screenplay,” he reminded you of your nomination and you suddenly felt the same nerves Chris did earlier. “Let’s move on to the next category, shall we?”
Your nerves disappeared and you redirected your attention when Chris returned; he wrapped his arms around you as you wrapped yours around him. “I told you you’d win,” you whispered as you pulled away. “I didn’t marry you for your good looks, you know.” You teased him and he chuckled, dipping his head to kiss you ever so tenderly on the lips.
“I know,” he whispered when he broke the kiss, “you married me for my Oscar.”
“Like I need yours when I have three at home,” you poked his side and he laughed.
You and Chris continued to pass notes with stupid jokes and doodles under the table while the rest of the cast answered questions from the fans. This was the fourth press conference in a week, everyone was suffering from sleep deprivation and using their own coping mechanisms to stay awake; yours was doing silly things with Chris.
Chris nudged your leg with the notebook as he passed it back to you. You bit back your smile and stifled your chuckle when you saw what he wrote: “You’re not going to be sleeping when we get back to the hotel.” You glanced over at him and he looked up at the crowd, smiling nonchalantly. You snatched the pen from his hand and drew a little cartoon sheep, you didn’t know why but you did. You passed the notebook back to Chris and upon seeing your sheep, he burst out laughing. You slapped his leg and he pressed his lips together when he realized he had drew in the attention of the other cast members and the audience.
“It’s like working with children,” Robert commented and everyone laughed. “No, seriously. The two of them- they can never be together without distracting each other and everyone else. It’s a wonder we got the movie done,” he joked.
“I know, right?” Mark agreed. “There were outtakes in all their scenes together because they just couldn’t stop laughing. They don’t even need to talk, they just look at each other and burst into laughter.” You and Chris looked at each other and laughed, proving Mark’s point. “See what I mean?” Mark chuckled and the fans laughed. “It’s like they’re crazy.”
“Leave us alone,” Chris chuckled. “We’re tired, okay?”
“The two of you’d be less tired if you actually spent your nights sleeping,” Robert quipped.
The crowds went wild at that comment and heat rose into yours and Chris’ cheeks. You looked over at Robert and shook your head with tightly pressed lips. He laughed and shrugged coolly even though he knew he was going to pay for it later. It wasn’t the teasing that bothered you, it was the fact that he did it in front of the fans and media.
You and Chris have been together for three years now, and in that three years- you’d tried very hard to keep your relationship and details of your relationship under wraps. Neither of you enjoyed the limelight because with the limelight came judgement from the public. You’d been told you weren’t good enough for Chris, and he’d been told he wasn’t good enough for you; that was among other nastier things. Both of you were used to it as you’d been in the industry for over a decade now; that experience meant you knew flying under the radar was the best way to make things last, and you definitely wanted things to last with Chris.
There weren’t many photos of the two of you together in public, just at official events like press tours and premieres. The media and the fans knew you were together but they didn’t know anything more, the two of you always avoided answering personal questions and telling personal stories; they still didn’t know how the two of you met and fell in-love. The most public comment- “they are definitely going to tie the knot, don’t you worry” was made earlier this year at the Captain America: Civil War premiere, also by Robert. It trended on the internet for three months after and became the question the two of you got at every interview and press conference you attended.
“She’s definitely going to kill me later,” Robert chuckled with a wince, drawing more laughter from the crowd. “I’m sorry, kid. It just slipped out,” he said and you chuckled softly. “Now you know why Chris and I had that Civil War.”
“A man’s gotta defend his girl,” Chris joked and slid his hand into yours. “Can we move on to the next question?” He asked, beckoning his head at the crowd. “You’re up, Buck.” He called out to the girl dressed as Bucky Barnes before he became The Winter Soldier.
“Hi, um- I’d just like to say that I love all of you and thank you so much for Civil War.” She began shyly and everyone smiled at how polite she was. “I’d also like to say to Chris and Y/N that- we all love it when Robert and the rest of the cast talk about your relationship. You guys are so cute together.” She complimented, and you and Chris glanced at each other with a small smile. “I know you and Y/N like to keep things private and we all respect that but- we really wish we’d see more of your relationship.”
“Thank you,” Chris smiled, squeezing your hand gently. “We really appreciate all the love and support from our fans, it means a lot. And believe me, we don’t mean to keep you guys in the dark. We love you and we do want to share our lives with you, but there are some things we’d prefer to keep between ourselves.”
“We understand,” the girl nodded. “As fans, we just want to see our idols happy and you two are clearly very happy together. Whether or not you want to share that with us- is completely up to you. We’re just happy you’re happy.” You and Chris smiled at each other and everyone in the room smiled with you. “But we do hope that when the time comes you’ll share the news of your engagement with us.”
“Of course,” Chris turned away from you and nodded. “It’ll be the first thing I tweet about.”
“Same,” Robert chimed and everyone laughed. “I think that’d be the first thing everyone tweets about when they hear the news. Right, guys?” He leaned forward and glanced between the cast members who all nodded with wide grins.
“My engagement is something you will all know about as soon as I do.” You told your fans and they all cheered. “All we gotta wait for now is Captain America,” you glanced at him and bit back your smile. “He can fight Nazis, aliens, and world class villains but he can’t seem to sum up the guts to ask me,” you teased him.
Chris said nothing, he just chuckled and bit back his smile.
“I don’t know if you know but there’s a pool going on, Chris.” Scarlett joked; you doubt it was a joke though, you’d heard numerous times about the pool. “Come on, wait any longer and I’m going to lose my money. Everyone’s out, I think it’s just Robert and I left.” She glanced over at Robert and he nodded. “Yeah, and I want to beat Iron Man.”
“The world’s waiting on you, Evans.” Chris H egged on and everyone laughed, including you and Chris. “What are you waiting for? You’ve got a good thing going with Y/N, just tie the knot already. You don’t want some other superhero sweeping her off her feet, do you?”
“God forbid it’s a superhero from DC.” You dramatically added and pretended to swoon with a hand to your forehead. You knew you were going along with something you’d previously glared at Robert for but- it was your relationship you were talking about and if you couldn’t beat ‘em, you might as well join them.
“Y/N,” Chris chuckled and leaned in to whisper into your ear, “you’re going to regret going along with this.” You laughed and he pressed a quick kiss to the side of your head before pulling his hand out of yours. “I had it all planned out,” he spoke into the microphone and your eyes narrowed in confusion. “I was going to take her to a holiday cabin, cook for her, serenade her. But I guess I’m going to have to do that after she says yes now.”
A deafening silence fell over the room when everyone realized what Chris was about to do. Your breath hitched in your throat when Chris rose to his feet. He smiled at you as he slipped his hand into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. Your lips parted in awe at the diamond ring he fished out of his wallet; it sparkled brighter than any star you’d seen. He took your left hand in his and descended down on one knee.
“What are you doing?” You breathed.
“I’m proposing out of my comfort zone.”
“I can see that,” you chuckled nervously. “And you’re going to cause us to trend worldwide.” You glanced at the crowd; there were phones everywhere filming and taking photos. “It’s kind of hard to turn back now, but I still need you to be sure about this. I’m sure we can pull a fire alarm or something,” you joked and laughed softly.
“I’m sure about you,” he smiled, “I’m sure about us. This is what I want, what I’ve been wanting for a while now. Hence- why the ring’s in my wallet,” he chuckled and you smiled. “So yes, I’m sure about this. I’m sure I want to propose in front of five hundred and sixty-four people, majority of which- I don’t know, because I don’t care about how I get the yes. All I care about is that the yes is going to give me the rest of my life with you.”
“At least we’ll have hundreds of videos to remember this moment,” you smiled.
“Yeah,” he chuckled. “Okay, you ready?” He asked and you nodded. “Let’s do this.” He pressed a kiss on the back of your hand then reached for the microphone, he glanced out at the crowd and smiled before turning back to you. “Y/N, will you make me the happiest man on the planet and marry me?”
You leaned in and spoke, your answer amplified by the microphone. “like I could say anything other than yes.” Applause, cheers, and excited screams erupted around the room as Chris slipped the ring onto your finger. You rose to your feet, helping him onto his. “I love you, Chris Evans,” you told him before pressing your lips to his.
